I made this concoction today (had to half it due to the size of my spray bottle), and I added 4 drops of lavender essential oil too. It worked like a dream. There’s a hint of lavender smell in his room and nothing else.
2. As others have stated, if you go to dump out the waste water in the tank, you will more than likely lose some of your cleaner/clean water. The alternative to this is, go figure, don’t dump the dirty tank until it is “full”. There is a line on the tank that reads “full” when the dirty water gets up that high. I also have found that when you turn it a certain way to empty, you run less risk of emptying out your clean water/soap bladder than if you just “dump it out” in a rush. If you turn it where the “empty hole” is furthest away from you, the “clean water fill” hole is at the top, you run less risk of emptying out the good water. Also, if I wait for the sprayer/clean water to empty, then I haven’t got a problem. I also will just fill it half full. We are talking tablespoons of the clean soap that you are using by the time you fill a full tank and then use most of it. The “clean” tank only requires a few ozs. of cleaning solution, so if you know you won’t use a full tank, then don’t make a full tank. It isn’t that big of a deal to me to lose a few ozs of soap, but to some it may be.

The citrus scent is nice and easy on the nose and will also discourage all but the most stubborn pets from reusing the area. We all know the pain of having to repeatedly clean the same area and any kind of discouragement from continuing this process unabated is good for both us and our pets.
Use the baking soda and vinegar method. Spray the area with vinegar, then sprinkle on enough baking soda to thinly coat the area of the stain. Cover the stain with a towel for 24 hours, then wash the area thoroughly with cold water. This mixture should absorb the stain and cleanse the area thoroughly, and cheaply.
Start off by taking all of the furniture apart – pillows, blankets and the like – and vacuuming everything thoroughly. If the sofa and chairs have removable slipcovers or cushion covers, take those off for washing (details later). Get into the crevices of the furniture as deep as possible to remove all the hair, and flip the bed mattress to get both sides. On the floors, make sure to get under all of the furniture and in the corners, where “hair bunnies” tend to gather.

Obviously the best long-term solution is to get the little guy going potty outside. I am not sure what your process is, but adding the use of a crate/kennel (or in your case pen) to the regime can be helpful, in addition to positive re-enforcement. It’s a total pain, but it really cuts down on the accidents and is worth it in the long run. So for example as soon as the puppy wakes up, take him outside to go potty. If he goes throw a party and have a little play session. If he doesn’t go within 5 minutes or so, bring him back inside and place him in his pen-there isn’t any fun time until his business is done. Anywhere from 5-15 minutes later repeat the above process. When he does go, he gets let out to play run around etc. etc. but not before. Again it’s a hassle, but it really cuts down on missing any accidents in hidden places, and they pick up quick on the positive re-enforcement and learn to hurry up and potty so they can play!

If you have thick carpeting and padding, like I do, it does NOT work well at all. I spent the better part of half an hour attempting to get the water sucked out of the stairs with the hand tool. In order to get it to work well, you have to press down HARD, otherwise, it doesn’t suck the water out completely. No problem? Well, the brush works basically with the suction. When you press hard (being a weak upper body person, that meant I had to throw my weight into it), it stops the brushes from spinning. Kind of the entire idea of the tool, I would think. I ended up using the entire shampooer, not the tool on the larger/curved stairs at the bottom of our staircase and the tool to complete the top thinner stairs-which there are more of, hence the half hour cleaning time for 22 stairs. Basically, the stair tool is a “dud”, in my opinion, unless you have thin carpet. Even then, I think the brush spins rather weakly, making it not really a scrubbing tool. I still LOVE this shampooer and have very thick carpeting and padding which is able to be walked on within 2 hours and bone dry after 4-5 due to the great suction on this machine.

4. Cord is about 12″ too short. Seriously. What size room do they do in the test rooms? Dyson seems to be the only one who thinks you need some cordage to use their product, I am guessing. I think that would be the number one complaint of everyone who owns this cleaner. I know it was the one that I read the most about. In order to do my family room, I have to stop and unplug it one time, so is it a big deal? Again, not to me because I usually have to dump the tank by that time, but would it be a big deal to you? I am not sure of the actual length of the cord, you should just know to expect a short cord. I am sure it has something to do with how you have to wrap the cord vs. how large of a hook they can put on there, or already burgeoning weight of the cleaner, not to add more cord, but again, I am no expert on these things.
Fold a bath towel two times and cover the urine spot. Stand on towel and dab the urine into the towel by walking In place. When urine is seen on the towel under your shoes pick up the towel and cover the urine with an unsoiled section of the folded towel. Repeat as necessary to get the liquid up. As urine comes up from the carpet use unfolded towels or only fold once.
As our aim is not just to wash the spot but to prevent our dog from peeing there again we should try to use some ingredients which has very strong smell. Using vodka or alcohol (as they have such a strong odor themselves) will help to avoid the future repetition of the pee smell situation. Blot with a soft cloth.  For heavier stains, sprinkle baking soda directly on the stain. Pour a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water on the area and let it sit for 5 minutes and blot up with a cloth.
Try an enzymatic cleaner to start. Wet the area with cool distilled water, pouring a small amount around the perimeter of the stain, moving from the outside of the stain toward the center. Spray an enzymatic cleaner on the wet spot, and allow it to sit overnight. If your carpet is wool, make sure you’re using a wool-safe cleaner.

Sounds like your kitty may need a new cat food. I have a lot of experience with cats, and most of the hairballs and vomiting stopped for us when we switched to a more natural food. To relate to the throwing up issue my cat apparently has a sensitive stomach. I’ve tried high end brands purchased at the vet’s office to low cost foods. He doesn’t throw up if he eats soft canned food or people food. Something in the cat food itself is causing it. So in case this is your issue- I found Hill’s Healthy Balance. I’ve found it at our local Fleet Farm. I assume you can find it wherever. My cat is 12 years old and has always been fairly skinny. I didn’t know what else to do for the poor thing. However, since finding this food he has nearly stopped vomiting all together. He may throw up once in a blue moon now. He also clearly has gained about 1 to 1.5 pounds and looks healthy. The food is fairly expensive but he is so much healthier and he goes through less food/uses litterbox less. So you save money in the end!

If your cat urinates outside the box and has no health issues that are causing it then it has territorial issues. Make an area the “cat’s area” and don’t allow other pets to relax or hang out in “her special area”. She is marking a lot to mark it as hers, she feels she has no space of her own. Trust me, I’ve had cats for almost 50 years and I did not think the territory idea would work but it did. I saw it on Cat Whisperer show.

I have come across a flash light like device that emits a “black light ” that when shined onto an area that has urine stains the light will illuminate with a bright light color making it possible to detect urine srains. This light is available on Amazon for about $7:00. Using in a darkened room will help spotting the stains easier.

We have an apartment also and I’ve wondered about what they’re going to do with this carpet when we move out, because our pet deposit is too small to be enough to replace all the carpet… BUT we do use baking soda/vinegar mixture on it to clean then vinegar sprayed on top out of a spray bottle. Your recommendation is good. Remember, you may want to soak up the residual moisture with baking soda. Cover it with a paper towel and place a heavy book on top and let it sit overnight. And sodium acetate really wont do anything to anything at that concentration either, it’s far too diluted in the mixture to actually do anything. The only thing you could argue is putting the baking deep in the stain then pouring the vinegar over it. It could lift some of the stains away from carpet fibers, but the actual chemistry of mixing the ingredients WONT do anything. You are cleaning it with basically nothing but water.

Yes! Thank you for saying that! Real (raw) food is the only way they should eat. I feed my German Shepherd Dog raw meaty bone, raw meat and raw organs. It upsets me knowing animals are forced to eat commercial food with diseased and euthenized animals in the ingredients. (Of course it’s not listed but it’s in there)

When your dog pees on your carpet, there are a few issues you have to address — the smell, the carpet stains and how much of the carpet is saturated, i.e. how long since he peed (and how long the urine has had to seep deep into the carpet).

As dog owners, we’ve all been there. You got delayed at the office or running errands, and your dog couldn’t hold it any longer. Of course, he picked the perfect place on the carpet to pee. My neighbor can’t get her tiny yorkie trained so she stays in a fenced in area all the time and uses a disposable pad. I was using them too but when her dog visits (which is daily) she wasn’t using them, she would go all over the house. My sister told me she was started using large non disposable pads like the pads used in hospital beds. I tried it and both dogs are using it with no accidents. I just throw them in the washer with bleach. I think a little odor, that only the dogs smell, brings them back to it every time. They are very inexpensive and much cheaper than disposables.

Fold a bath towel two times and cover the urine spot. Stand on towel and dab the urine into the towel by walking In place. When urine is seen on the towel under your shoes pick up the towel and cover the urine with an unsoiled section of the folded towel. Repeat as necessary to get the liquid up. As urine comes up from the carpet use unfolded towels or only fold once.
I recently acquired two dogs. My worries about having the dogs was the mess they would leave on my carpet. But unless you have a lot of carpet to clean and plan to clean often, you might want to consider a lighter model. 
No matter how well-trained your furry pal is, accidents happen. You need to know how to clean dog urine from carpet. If at all possible, clean up urine as soon as it hits the floor and while it’s still wet. Once it dries, the odor will set into the carpet fibers. Place a towel or a couple of layers of paper towels on the spot to absorb the urine. Stand on the towel so it pushes into the carpet and absorbs as much urine as possible. Isopropyl alcohol, better known as rubbing alcohol, is an effective disinfectant and has antibacterial properties. Its powerful scent is not agreeable for canines. Dilute rubbing alcohol using one part alcohol and one part water and spray it on your carpets. Reapply the mixture weekly or after each cleaning of the carpets.
I really hope you don’t have any pets. You’re part of the problem of over crowded pounds, unnecessary euthenasia and why some dogs have a hard time getting adopted. Hey so, I just wanted to say that the one where you mix the baking soda and vinegar you are just making sodium acetate, water, and Co2. If you mix them in the bowl or sprayer before applying it you aren’t really doing anything. You just end up with a lot of water and a small amount of either baking soda or vinegar left over (whichever had too much for the reaction). Just wanted to point that out. It’s basic chemistry.

On carpet, cover the area with paper towels or an absorbent cloth and use your hands or feet to gently press. This will help draw out and soak up as much liquid as possible. You may need to use several paper towels, and repeal the process until the area is almost completely dry.
For set-in pet stains on carpeting or rugs, simple spray cleaners may not suffice. You can rent a carpet cleaner from your local grocery or hardware store, or hire professional carpet cleaners to come attack the stains.
Thanks justmesuzanne, but I haven’t found any odor problems after treating the area promptly with just vinegar and baking soda. Listerine is a good tip (apparently this product was first invented as a floor cleaner and only later became a mouthwash!!). I would definitely recommend checking that it has no effect on the color of the carpet by testing in an inconspicuous area first though.
It is great if you noticed the puddle immediately and started to clean up. But what should we do if the carpet is already dry and we need to get rid of dog pee smell? We should mix one cup of hydrogen peroxide with 1 tablespoon of dishwashing soap. Using the brush wash the spot properly. It is better to wash even a bit bigger surface than the spot itself.

3) You might be treating a surface stain, but this does nothing to clean the padding. That’s where the odor comes from. That’s where bacteria grows. You have to kill what’s in the padding to make the carpet clean and to stop it from smelling.
If the vinegar mixture is not working, you need to have a professional come out to clean. The problem is not the carpet, it is the padding underneath the carpet. If a spill or accident is not blotted up immediately, it soaks through the carpet and into the pad. When you spot clean, it does not clean down to the pad. The carpet may smell nice & look good, but if it gets wet or warm enough then the stuff left in the pad will come back up into the carpet. You really need to call a professional carpet cleaner with a truck mounted unit to come clean it. Their systems use very hot water & have a strong suction unit. They can get deep down to the pad & then extract all that water so it does not deteriorate the backing on your carpet.

I have 2 older poms, Bear is 10 and had a bad time for several months of drinking every drop of water, several times a day and then constantly having accidents all over the house. And every time I took them out, he went a lot! First vet visit I was told that his urine was too watered to tell if he had any infection. You don’t have to cut the sub floor out, if you do it right and there is no visible stain on carpet you can replace the area of stained padding for the sub-floor paint over affected area with kills paint, available at Walmart and lumber stores return carpet to use.

Now, you ask why would I give it a 4 star rating and not a 5 since I am so in love with this thing and all of my “cons” are really “not that big of a deal” to me? Because these are all legitimate complaints that others who have reviewed this product have made. I would recommend it highly and from the rooftops even though I legitimize their complaints. I think for what you are getting, this machine is a WAY better deal than paying someone to “professionally” do the job for you for the same price and get substandard, WET results in the meantime. The pros NEVER got our tromped down traffic areas fluffy.

I don’t know what to say about how wonderful this tip has been. I have two bichons, one of which has always had problems with holding her bladder.
