Freshen the air. Whether your house is plagued with pet odors or not, air fresheners can always sweeten your home’s scent. Pick a commercial freshener, or make your own. Either way, you’ll have a ton of options, from warm vanilla to fresh citrus. When you opt for commercial sprays, gels, or plug-ins, make sure they’re specially formulated to be safe for pets. Spray it around the house to freshen the air.
Wipe paws before your pet comes inside. Pets love to explore. This brings them a lot of joy, but also means that they can track all kinds of stinky substances into the house. To prevent this, leave a towel by the door and always wipe your pet’s paws when it comes inside. This is especially important on rainy and muddy days, or if your pet rolled in something outside.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder infections sometimes warrant urgent medical attention so you should be alert to symptoms. Besides foul smelling urine, other signs of a UTI are that you may feel the need to urinate more often, have sudden urges to pee, feel like the bladder isn’t fully empty even after you have peed, have a pain in your lower abdomen, and generally experience aches and tiredness. If you have back pain, fever, chills, or a burning pain when you pee, you should rush to your doctor at the earliest.5
I’m interested in the intersection between design and technology—whether for drywall or robotic vacuums—and how the resulting combination affects consumers. I’ve written about consumer advocacy issues for publications like The Atlantic, PC Magazine, and Popular Science, and now I’m happy to be tackling the topic for CR. NOTE: ** Several complained on here that the shampooer only comes with a “tiny” bottle of the solution. The free bottle that came with mine was a 24 ozs. bottle. It says on the bottle to use 4 capfuls of the solution per tank of water, but the instructions that came with the machine as well as the larger bottle of solution that I bought in anticipation of receiving a “tiny” bottle, say to only use one capful. The cap holds 2 ozs. of solution. That is all I have used in the machine so far and it seems to work perfectly. I would think that you would be able to get several uses out of the bottle at that rate before you have to purchase a new bottle, BUT that having been said, if you use the 4 capfuls as the bottle suggests, then you would only get 6 uses out of the one bottle. That having been said, if you are concerned you will run out before you finish carpets in your home, buy a bottle when you buy the machine or before it arrives. 🙂 ****
I never have problems with pee. My problem is with a cat that throws up. How do you get those stains out. My brand new carpet is stained so bad it needs replacing again. Cat food is made of brightly colored
My husband and I were thinking about taking him to ‘doggy school’, but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest ‘doggy school’ is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

Try this super product from Nature’s Miracle that contains no phosphates and is designed for use with any brand of machine you have for cleaning your rugs and carpets, provided that it is of the water-based type.
Leather and leather-like fabrics are a little more delicate, but can still be cleaned. Make a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Soak a cloth and wring out as much liquid as you can, so the cloth is barely damp. Then, wipe the surface of the fabric to remove any troublesome smells that are lurking.
Then, we apply our amazing odor removal product, P.U.R.T., to each stain. P.U.R.T. travels deep into the carpet pad and even the sub-floor reaching areas that typical cleaning products or process cannot reach.
Funnel 7 tablespoons of brown sugar into your container, and add the fruit. Next, add the water, and tightly screw on the cap, giving everything a good shake to mix it around. Loosen the cap and leave it on halfway to release the gases and ensure your bottle doesn’t explode due to the build-up. After 3 months, you’re natural enzymatic cleaner will be ready to use!
Does it have a good look? Sure. But that’s about it. I bought this from Walmart not much over a year ago. Worked good for the first few months…not great, had time to time issues with the system drawing the liquids from the chambers. Got worse and worse over time. Not long after a years worth of use, which just so happens to be just beyond the warranty, it’s not drawing liquids from either chamber, the main suction area doesn’t work any longer…and the attachment suction barely works. On top of that…it comes with one of those power cords that tangles extremely easy upon itself. And where the power cord comes out of the machine is terrible placement. You have to fight wrapping and unwrapping the extension suction around the power cord for each use. Still not done. Small carpet fibers easily get pulled into the suction areas of the machine, to places where it’s impossible to remove the carpet fibers without breaking it open. Poor design…poor machine. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MODEL!!!
Vacuum up any loose debris from the area that will be treated. Wet the area to be treated with clean, warm water. Using your vacuum or carpet extractor wet extraction capabilities, clean the are 2-3 times, leaving the area damp. Pour OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator on the treatment area. Spread the OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator on the treatment area. Spread the OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator into the area working it deeply into the carpet or covering surface completely.
The shade, light or dark, also changes. If it has no color at all, that may be because you’ve been drinking a lot of water or taking a drug called a diuretic, which helps your body get rid of fluid. Very dark honey- or brown-colored urine could be a sign that you’re dehydrated and need to get more fluids right away. It may also be a warning sign of liver problems, so see your doctor if it doesn’t get better after a day or so.
Clean pet messes immediately. You may be tempted to leave extra nasty messes for later, but try to act as soon as possible to avoid lingering odors. Pick up solid waste and throw it in the garbage. Blot the mess to absorb excess moisture. Spray the mess with an enzyme cleaner, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, blot the area with rags or a cloth and let it air dry.
Urine is the body’s liquid waste. It is made by the kidneys, which filters toxins out of the blood. It contains water, salt, urea, and uric acid. Urea is expelled in the form of sweat through the body, while uric acid is the result of urine metabolism.

The market is filled with commercial pet stain removers, deodorizers and air fresheners to help remove urine stains from the carpet. Turn to these products if using vinegar and baking soda fails to remove the urine smell from your home.
Hydrogen peroxide, or H2O2, is a powerful oxidizer that renders the chemicals in strong, acidic pet fluids, such as urine or vomit, inert. Peroxide breaks down the crystallizing compounds in urine and also removes stains. Be sure to test for color fastness before applying.
How to get dog urine smell out of carpet from my experience. We have Resolve for pet stains and odors. We were with our dog when she had her accident inside so we were able to act fast. We blotted the area with a rag to try and pick up as much urine as possible, then sprayed the area and let it set in for a while. Then scrubbed really well and we haven’t noticed a smell or any stain.
2) Vinegar can direct your pet (cat, dog or rabbit), to pee in the spot where it was used. Don’t believe me? Read the human society’s website. If you put vinegar down, you are just going to have more accidents from your pet going in that spot.
I used a rented carpet cleaner extractor which is way more powerful then the home versions and the Nature’s Miracle posted above, not the gallon type. I really thought it was a lost cause but it worked! 🙂

We’ve picked out five of the best, modern cleaning products to help you deal with piddle stains and the resulting odor. Each is uniquely suited for something, and all of them are worthwhile for the animal owner who wants to keep their home from smelling and their carpets from being stained by the machinations of their dogs and cats.
It differs form the BISSELL Big Green in that it has a smaller tank size, and it does not seem to deep clean as powerfully as the Big Green. Its advantage over the Big Green lies in the pure focus on pets, with the pet hair collector, and also its smaller size and the lower price.
Menopause can also increase a woman’s risk for UTIs and ammonia-smelling odor, resulting from drops in the female hormone estrogen and loss of vaginal flora, which are the normal and healthy bacteria living in the vagina. Both these changes may cause ammonia-smelling urine.
“On the other hand, if you have carpeted stairs, you want to get a carpet cleaner that has a long hose, so you can reach up the steps,” says Larry Ciufo, who oversees Consumer Reports’ carpet cleaner tests. “You don’t want to put the cleaner on the top step and pull on the hose when you’re cleaning, because the machine could barrel down the steps.”
Your urine characteristics can also function as an early warning system for serious health problems including urinary stones, infections, kidney problems, metabolic disorders, diabetes, pituitary disorders, and even tumors
Step 1: Create a vinegar cleaning solution consisting of one part white vinegar to one part water. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia smell of urine without fading carpet fibers, making it a good choice for cleaning and protecting your carpet.
CR’s take: At 105 inches long, the hose on this carpet cleaner makes the Hoover a good candidate for homes with carpeted stairs and other hard-to-reach spots. This model is slightly lighter than the Bissell ProHeat 2X Lift-Off Pet at 18 pounds empty and 27 pounds when full of solution. And at this price, it’s easier on your wallet, too. It scores Very Good at both cleaning and drying, and can cover up to 33 square feet of carpet on one tank of solution.
I have two toddlers. Enough said! lol. I used to grab a wet rag to clean stuff up- which doesn’t work well on carpet or our chairs! One of our chairs (PICTURED) was actually SO BAD that it was crusty and about 15 shades darker than its original color (from spilled juice, snacks, etc.)!! After cleaning it with the Bissel Pro-heat (Pet), which took about 10 minutes, it was back to its original color and looks brand new! It also took out some stains on our carpet that we thought would never come out! Needless to say, we don’t regret buying this, especially at a great price! Very easy to use and set up. We have recommended it to our in-laws and they love it as well.
“Your best defense as soon as you see an accident is to blot as much as you can with towels,” he said. “Then, put a few drops of green dish detergent and a little water on the area, place a towel over it and step on it so it absorbs as much as possible.”
Normal urine is clear and has a straw-yellow color. While the odor of urine can vary somewhat, in most cases, it does not have a strong smell. With dehydration, the urine is more concentrated and may have a stronger ammonia scent than normal. Consumption of certain foods, such as asparagus (which can impart a characteristic odor to urine), and taking some medications may be causes for changes in the odor of urine. The presence of bacteria in the urine, such as with a urinary tract infection (UTI), can affect the appearance and smell of urine. When there is an infection in the urinary tract, the urine may take on a foul-smelling odor as well as appear cloudy or bloody. A burning sensation during urination may be a symptom of a UTI. The urine may also have an abnormally sweet odor in uncontrolled diabetes, and some rare genetic conditions can also cause the urine to have an abnormal or strange odor.
