The enzymes also destroy the pheromone in the urine stain. This is something I personally have never smelled, our noses can’t, but while vinegar may rid the urine smell, it will not destroy the pheromones. Also because my husband owns a carpet store, I can tell you a lot of times people clean the carpet, but if the urine is still in the pad underneath, or the sub floor, they are chasing their tails (pun intended) you need to be sure the pad and floor are also cleaned with the enzyme cleaner.
I’ve been using the vinegar/water mix for years to rid the carpet of pet odors. It’s always worked well for me. I like the baking soda suggestion and if I get in a position where V/W doesn’t work, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestions Angie’s!
Our experts use a colorimeter, a device that measures the absorption of light wavelengths, to take 60 readings of each carpet swatch: 20 in its “virgin” state, 20 after it has been soiled, and 20 after it has been cleaned. The total? 180 readings per machine.
On hardwood or laminate floors, use paper towels, an absorbent cloth, or a mop to sop up the pee. I love these reusable, super-absorbent cleaning cloths. Just throw them in the washing machine after use.
The shade, light or dark, also changes. If it has no color at all, that may be because you’ve been drinking a lot of water or taking a drug called a diuretic, which helps your body get rid of fluid. Very dark honey- or brown-colored urine could be a sign that you’re dehydrated and need to get more fluids right away. It may also be a warning sign of liver problems, so see your doctor if it doesn’t get better after a day or so.
This spot cleaning unit fits away quite easily, and you’ll find that you can store it just about anywhere. Small cleaning closet? You’ll be good. You’ll have to put in the work, the bristles aren’t exactly fantastic and it’s not the best option for pet hair, but for some people, it will be the perfect fit.
Odor Destroyer is not a simple air freshener designed to cover the smell with a stronger scent. Designed specifically to deal with difficult odors like cat urine, Odor Destroyer is a formulated blend of odor eliminating compounds. The fragrances in Odor Destroyer are present only to leave your home smelling fresh while the active ingredients neutralize the source of the odor.
What I finally did was to purchase this baking soda based + fragrance carpet deodorizer (Arm & Hammer brand with oxy-clean which pulls up 25% more dirt), sprinkled all over, brush the carpet with a broom to spread out the powder, then vacuum in 30 mins. I am quite pleased as I no longer smell urine in the house.
We have a little female Sheltie that has had repeated urinary infections therefore she has had those accidents we’ve been reading about. If you watch your dog while outside and they try to pee (males???) and nothing comes out, this may be a clue that they have some irritation. Get to the vet. Cleaning their bottoms occasionally with a baby wipe may keep the bacteria in-check.
I have a term for some of my fosters-“ninja pee-er.” These are the pups that somehow manage to sneak off and go potty in a hidden corner and I have a lovely surprise several days later when the stain has set! Even though you haven’t seen any signs of missed accidents, I would suggest checking *meticulously* over any rugs/carpeting for spots you may have missed that set in. Even in corners, behind bookcases, and under beds (or on them!) Where the ninja pee-er strikes, they will strike again, and everything can just compound if you’re missing it.
Nature’s Miracle is one of the most popular pet cleaning products out there. The advanced formula attacks set-in pet stains, removes pet pheromones, and destroys odors on contact to prevent re-soiling. Best of all, you can use it on any surface.
We also plan to purchase a carpet cleaning machine as soon as it is on-sale, and we will clean our carpet ourselves every three months. We trust that after a few cleans, we will get most of the stuff out. In the meantime, we vacuum our house very frequently. Every cleaning helps!
Find previously soiled areas using a black light. If you have a persistent odor problem in a particular room, use a black light to illuminate all surfaces in the room. Urine will glow under black light, and once detected can be cleaned.
Rarely review anything but I had to for this product. First let me say that I have a graveyard of at least 100 cat urine neutralizer products… none of them have worked for me. This product, however, is AMAZING! I have two cats and they occasionally pee outside their litter box. Many covers have been destroyed and thrown away. I wish I had discovered this product sooner. I put the stained covers in the washer machine first with vinegar and let them soak for a few hours. Then I put them through the rinse cycle 2-3 times. After that I soaked them with this product overnight (I’m sure it doesn’t have to be that long, I just wanted to make sure the fabric soaked it up) and then rinsed and dried the covers. I smell NOTHING, the covers do NOT smell like urine and the product does not leave an after scent. The only problem I had was that the bottle is sooooooo small, but it is my fault for not noticing the size before buying. I will be purchasing this product again. I am so happy to finally find something that works!
CR’s take: This Hoover performs at two extremes. It gets the poorest marks for cleaning of all the carpet cleaners in our tests but one of the best scores for leaving behind a dry carpet, an Excellent. It does have some nice convenience features, such as separate tanks for clean and dirty water, a 100-inch hose, a carrying handle, and brush attachments. Unfortunately, features don’t make up for poor performance.
Pets are great, but they don’t always smell that way. Even the cutest cats and dogs can make your rugs and furniture stinky if you’re not vigilant. Worse, even the best pets can have accidents on the rug.
“After seventeen years experience in the cleaning business, I have found OdorKlenz treatment effectiveness’ far beyond normal chemical process capabilities currently available to the professional carpet cleaning industry.”
I have had this for a couple years and have had nothing but problems with it since I got it! Bissell is cheaply priced for a reason! I swore their vacuums off long ago, I should of never caved and got a rug scrubber made by them. This thing has been nothing but a pain, it does not clean at all! when my carpets were damp they appeared clean, once fully dried all stains were still there! And I used their expensive cleaning solutions! Then the dirty water started mixing with the clean water no fix there unless you want to buy a new water tank/bladder I wasn’t looking to spend more money on a piece of junk . Then it stopped spraying – fixed that issue by watching YouTube videos, now it leaks water out from some where that I can’t figure out, during use, and then when I shut it off I get a huge amount coming out from behind a wheel and end up with a puddle on the floor! Do not waste your money on any Bissell product! I know I won’t ever do it again, I’ll stick with Hoover & Eureka!
“On the other hand, if you have carpeted stairs, you want to get a carpet cleaner that has a long hose, so you can reach up the steps,” says Larry Ciufo, who oversees Consumer Reports’ carpet cleaner tests. “You don’t want to put the cleaner on the top step and pull on the hose when you’re cleaning, because the machine could barrel down the steps.”
Urine is the body’s liquid waste. It is made by the kidneys, which filters toxins out of the blood. It contains water, salt, urea, and uric acid. Urea is expelled in the form of sweat through the body, while uric acid is the result of urine metabolism.
Urine does not usually have a strong odor to it. However, occasionally, it will have a pungent smell of ammonia. One explanation for an ammonia odor is high amounts of waste in the urine. But certain foods, dehydration, and infections are also possible.
Several vacuum brands sell smaller versions of wet-vacs for home use that retail between $150 and $200. These handy machines spray, brush and remove stains on their own and sell a version of their concentrated cleaner that’s formulated specifically to treat pet stains.
I would definitely recommend a machine that has this ‘drying’ action as the carpets are nearly dry to walk on right afterwards – here in the UK this is especially appreciated during winter months when it’s not ideal if you have to have the windows open to help dry the carpet!
My doggy has had frequent accidents since we got her. I feel your pain! Instead of caging her at night, I started training her to sleep with me. I just put her leash around my ankle. I realized quickly that she wouldn’t tinkle on the bed, couch, or anytime she is leashed to me. My vet suggested this and it’s done wonders for my furry baby!!
Another way to use vinegar and baking soda, a staple in the green cleaning arsenal, is to mix them together in a spray bottle, said green cleaning coach Erinn Morgan, author of Picture Yourself Going Green. She suggests mixing one cup of distilled white vinegar with one cup of water and two heaping tablespoons of baking soda. Shake it up, spray it on the carpet, let it sit for five or six minutes, then gently blot it up with a fresh cloth, she said. The mixture will stay potent for a few months, so you might want to mix up a batch and keep it on hand if you have a puppy.

It is important to pee when you feel the urge. Delaying urination can cause bladder overdistension — like overstretching a Slinky such that it can’t bounce back. You may habitually postpone urination if you find bathroom breaks inconvenient at work, or if you have Paruresis (also known as Shy Bladder Syndrome, Bashful Bladder, Tinkle Terror, or Pee Anxiety), the fear of urinating in the presence of others. Seven percent of the public suffers from this condition.10
Bladder stones may occur as a result of concentrated urine forming crystals and usually occur only in men. The urine is also very dark and may sometimes be accompanied by some blood.3 Kidney stones can result in a constant need to pee, ability to only urinate a little at a time, pain while urinating, and possibly even blood in the urine.4
Leslie Reichert, a self-described “cleaning coach,” editor of Clean Green Living Magazine and author of The Joy of Green Cleaning, prefers to hit dog urine stains with a few squirts of hydrogen peroxide. Spray the stain, let it bubble up (that means it’s working) and let it sit for 10 to15 minutes before sopping it up with a rag. “Be sure to spot test first to make sure the hydrogen peroxide doesn’t discolor your carpet,” she said.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder infections sometimes warrant urgent medical attention so you should be alert to symptoms. Besides foul smelling urine, other signs of a UTI are that you may feel the need to urinate more often, have sudden urges to pee, feel like the bladder isn’t fully empty even after you have peed, have a pain in your lower abdomen, and generally experience aches and tiredness. If you have back pain, fever, chills, or a burning pain when you pee, you should rush to your doctor at the earliest.5
Urinary frequency is also important. Peeing six to eight times per day is “average.” You might go more or less often than that, depending on how much water you drink and how active you are. Increased frequency can be caused by an overactive bladder (involuntary contractions), caffeine, a urinary tract infection (UTI), interstitial cystitis, benign prostate enlargement, diabetes, or one of a handful of neurological diseases.9
