I’m interested in the intersection between design and technology—whether for drywall or robotic vacuums—and how the resulting combination affects consumers. I’ve written about consumer advocacy issues for publications like The Atlantic, PC Magazine, and Popular Science, and now I’m happy to be tackling the topic for CR. For updates, feel free to follow me on Twitter (@haniyarae).
But at just over 5 feet, the hose is average-length. This model might fit the bill if you have a smaller space in a one-story house; it can cover only 15 square feet on one full tank of solution. (Some machines cover twice that area.) But you’ll end up with a carpet that dries easily because this Bissell scores an Excellent on our dryness test.
Clean or dispose of the towels. Because the towels you used for absorbing the urine will have faint traces of your pet’s scent, it’s important to keep your pet from marking them again. Help your pet avoid the temptation by discarding the towel.
I have used Listerine on all kinds of surfaces with absolutely no ill effects. I keep a spray bottle of it on hand to use as a way of keeping my cats away from areas where I don’t want them. It can be lightly sprayed on furniture, carpet, drapes, hardwood floors and just about anything else with no problems. It is more effective as a fabric freshener than Febreze and other products of that nature. In a fine mist bottle, it makes a good air freshener. It is much better used this way than in your mouth! LOL! 😀
Whether you’re taking care of years of build up of dog urine or a malcontent and spraying feline’s mess you’ll be glad to know that things can be handled. Make sure to give it some time to soak and you’ll be well on your way to a cleaner and better smelling floor.
I just paid 170.00 to steam clean carpet, and it smells!YUK!The stains are still VIVID.If I use the beauty shop hydro,a 40 volume- I would follow the directions of mixing it-OR…I want to get it right.

People with incontinence tend to drink less liquid, causing their urine to become very concentrated and strong-smelling. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day will dilute your urine and reduce or eliminate its odor.
Many of the cheaper cleaners simply won’t work on set in stains and odors. If that’s the case for you, then you’ll need to make sure that you get it with something strong, soak it, and leave it for a considerable period of time.
Oh and by the way, in case you are one of the many people who walk into a room and ask,”can you smell something?”, when you know your dog or cat has peed but it’s already dried and there is nothing left but the odor – I am going to reveal how you can find the offending area of carpet or upholstery in seconds and get it dealt with, right away!

Thank you so much for the pet stain and odor remover. I have 3 dogs, 2 are seniors and are prone to accidents now. I have a questions for you. Do you know of anything that helps toe nail fungal infections. I has caused my nails to thicken and are very uncomfortable.
The Bissell ProHeat 2X Lift-Off Pet 15651 is part of the Carpet cleaner test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Carpet cleaner models like the ProHeat 2X Lift-Off Pet 15651 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
If you suffer from the dog/cat pee problem and don’t have the ability or money to install tile, then buy indoor/outdoor carpet. The new stuff at Lowes feels like real carpet without the problems of it.
Most enzymatic cleaners need to be kept on a wet area for several hours. However, some might use a different process, so be sure to read the instructions on the label. If you’re cleaning wool carpet, make sure the cleaner is wool-safe.
Before buying from Melaleuca, I would check out the reviews on them and the BBB. Many people are complaining of being sent unwanted merchandise, having their CC billed even though they have ordered nothing, and of being harassed and threatened when they attempt to close their memberships. Personally, it would not be worth it for me to deal with a company like that no matter how well their products work, but I’ll leave it to you to judge that for yourself.
Let it sit for five to ten minutes then grab a towel and scrub the offending area. This actually works pretty well in a lot of cases, but the smell of vinegar can be overpowering for some people. This is mostly good for taking care of odors but the vinegar can often cut through some staining as well.
We are a nation of people who love to cuddle with our pets. It is undeniable. Long gone are the days when out pets were simply working companions whose place was at the hearth – and that was if they were allowed in the house. Now, they not only cuddle with us on the sofa to watch TV, they snuggle with us in our beds, go on long holiday trips in the car, even out to dinner at out favorite cafés.
Some cleaning products work better than others depending on the type of carpet you have, such as natural versus synthetic fibers. Read the label on these products to find the one that can best remove dog or pet urine odor from carpet.
For set-in pet stains on carpeting or rugs, simple spray cleaners may not suffice. You can rent a carpet cleaner from your local grocery or hardware store, or hire professional carpet cleaners to come attack the stains.
Please do not use bleach! You will strip the carpet fibers of the color dye. If you would like to learn how to remove pet odors and stains please call a professional Like Benchmark Restoration & Cleaning
Since getting my first pup, I have encountered her peeing everywhere. My solution to get odor out is to spray the spot with a bug spray, not only does it stop her from going back to the spot it also takes the odor out. Seems the bug spray is stronger than urine, the smell goes away in a couple of minutes but, stays longer enough for her to smell and leave it alone, I used Hot Shot flying insect spray. It’s harmful because the dog won’t go near it.
I had read mixed reviews regarding this carpet cleaner leaving “clumps” of hair/fur all over the rug, some people saying that it was due to it being so powerful that it pulls up hair that has been missed with a not so powerful vacuum cleaner, and others stating that its suction isn’t powerful enough thus the clumps!
If the accident just happened quickly absorb it from the carpet with toilet paper…keep rolling up paper and stepping on it over the accident until it’s dry. Re wet the stain with febreeze and again lift it up with toilet paper. Then pour baking soda over the spot…let it dry overnight. You will see the urine comes up into the baking soda…why? I have no idea…when it’s dry..scrape it up ( I use the back of the dustpan brush) sweep it up into a dustpan and thoroughly vacuum. Voila..stink and stain gone. If it’s old..this will not work.
3) Install indoor/outdoor carpet. There are very nice indoor/outdoor carpets for very cheap. Less than a hundred dollars to do any room in your house and even if your animals are horrible, they don’t soak up smell like regular carpet.
If you’re working with tile or white carpet, then you might want to try a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Try mixing a cup of baking soda, a half cup of 2% hydrogen peroxide, and a dash of dish soap.
Our experts use a colorimeter, a device that measures the absorption of light wavelengths, to take 60 readings of each carpet swatch: 20 in its “virgin” state, 20 after it has been soiled, and 20 after it has been cleaned. The total? 180 readings per machine.
Pee doesn’t usually have a strong smell. But some foods — especially asparagus, which has a smelly sulfur compound — can change the odor. So can vitamin B-6 supplements. When you’re dehydrated and your pee gets very concentrated, it can smell strongly of ammonia.
When diet is the cause of ammonia-smelling urine, the odor disappears once a person eliminates food triggers from their diet. Odor caused by something a person has eaten is usually nothing to worry about.
Try the vacuum method. Pour some cold water on the stain and immediately vacuum it up with a wet/dry vacuum. Repeat at least twice, or as many times as is necessary to remove the discoloration. Do not let the water sit; suck it up immediately (within seconds) of each application.
The enzymes also destroy the pheromone in the urine stain. This is something I personally have never smelled, our noses can’t, but while vinegar may rid the urine smell, it will not destroy the pheromones. Also because my husband owns a carpet store, I can tell you a lot of times people clean the carpet, but if the urine is still in the pad underneath, or the sub floor, they are chasing their tails (pun intended) you need to be sure the pad and floor are also cleaned with the enzyme cleaner.
The liver, similarly to the kidneys, is responsible for removing toxins from the body and helping it to digest food. Infections and diseases of the liver can produce high levels of ammonia in the urine and the accompanying pungent odor.
Most changes in urine odor are not a sign of disease and go away in time. Some foods and medicines, including vitamins, may affect your urine’s odor. For example, eating asparagus causes a distinct urine odor.
Brown Very dense urine concentration, extreme dehydration; consumption of fava beans; melanuria (too many particles in urine); UTI; kidney stone; kidney tumor or blood clot; Addison’s disease; glycosuria; renal artery stenosis; proteinuria; pituitary problem (ADH, or antidiuretic hormone) Consult your physician if problem persists despite adequate hydration, especially if accompanied by pale stools or yellow skin or eyes
Thank you so much!!!!! I am having this problem with one of my dogs. We have been using the baking soda and that dries it up. We have tried all kinds of store bought sprays that promise to work, but none of them do work. The vinegar sounds perfect ( the way you explained it makes perfect sense.) I am going to start doing it today. I just stumbled on this, Thank God for that.
On hardwood or laminate floors, use paper towels, an absorbent cloth, or a mop to sop up the pee. I love these reusable, super-absorbent cleaning cloths. Just throw them in the washing machine after use.
It differs form the BISSELL Big Green in that it has a smaller tank size, and it does not seem to deep clean as powerfully as the Big Green. Its advantage over the Big Green lies in the pure focus on pets, with the pet hair collector, and also its smaller size and the lower price.

Fortunately, the budget cost doesn’t seem to have had too much of a hit to its efficacy. This stuff works. You’ll be able to handle most stains and odors simply, just spray it down, give it some time to work, and then finish the job.
White vinegar is a miraculous substance that will get rid of even the old accident stains that might have been missed if a dog did a “ninja-pee” behind the bookshelves or something. Baking soda is nature’s odor remover, and teamed up with vinegar, does a great job at getting rid of odors!
