Good information! After you have done all these things, spray the area with straight Listerine (or a knock-off). It will kill the odor, and dogs and cats don’t like the smell of the Listerine, so it will help prevent their returning to the scene of the crime. Voted up and useful! 🙂
It’s a disposal for food waste. Of course it can get a little stinky! But it’s easy to fix. One of the first things you should know is don’t run hot water while using the disposal. Hot water only causes grease to liquefy, accumulate, and cause your drain to get clogged. Always run cold water while running the disposal.
This will get rid of a great deal of the smell, but to really do a thorough job, you might want to rent a carpet cleaning machine with an attachment for furniture – or call a cleaning company to do it for you. Always start with neutralizing as much of the smell as possible before the shampooing, though, or all you will be doing is creating a hybrid of dog smell and perfumed shampoo. Not a good combination. And don’t use carpet shampoo on the furniture, or you could end up with ruined and smelly furniture.
Your remedy for cleaning up cat urine is ridiculously complicated. I live alone but have two cats. Unfortunately, my Crazy Cat Lady from “Hazel-Tucky” has several…which leads me to believe that cats are not the only beings which need to be spayed or neutered! In any event, I merely discovered something you can find most anywhere..Walmart’s, etc., which works great. It”s called RESOLVE FOR PETS, and it costs about $3.79 or so per foam spray can, and just ONE can has a lot of “mileage” on it..since we are talking about SPOT cleaning, not TOTAL floor and carpet cleaning and shampooing. No, I don’t own any stock in the company that makes it, but I’m seriously thinking of it!
Use fans to increase circulation and get fresh air flowing. Fans are great for boosting the refreshing power of clean air. When you have the windows open, turn on ceiling and standing fans in the house to help create a bigger breeze and get the air moving.
Make a simmer pot. When you boil water in the kitchen, the water particles evaporate and get carried around the house. You can turn this into a potent air freshener by adding your favorite herbs, spices, and citrus rinds to a pot, filling it with water, and boiling it on the stove with the lid off for a couple of hours. Ingredients you can use in the simmer pot include:[17]
The first step is the most obvious. Clean any affected areas as thoroughly as possible. That doesn’t mean a quick vacuum or running over your hardwood with a Swiffer. Pet odor removal is only effective if you give affected areas a good, deep cleaning. Scrub and mop hard surfaces as thoroughly as possible, and think about using a vinegar or baking soda solution as you do so. Both are rumored to work wonders when it comes to removing pet smells. And if you’re dealing with pet odor removal from carpeting, hire a professional. Make sure they use the hot water extraction method (also known as “steam cleaning”), since it provides the deepest clean, and ask if they use a truck mounted unit. These units do a much better job of getting down into the carpet pile, where much of the pet smell resides, than other professional carpet cleaning techniques, or any homeowner operated unit you can rent.
We have 3 cats one pees on carpet down stairs not all time but regularly she has diabetes we are getting the carpet professionally cleaned soon and wondered if it would help if I sprayed the carpet down with vinegar a while before they come to neutralize the pee ?
Wash the bedding. You spend about a third of your life in your bed, so it’s no wonder that sheets, blankets, and pillow cases can start to smell up a room after a while. To remove these odors, strip the pillow cases, sheets, and other washable linens and covers from the bed, and wash them in the washing machine.
While some cats squat and urinate on bare floors, carpet, furniture and other horizontal surfaces, others will spray urine on vertical surfaces around the home. “Unfixed males spray to mark their territory, and unfixed females spray to let tomcats know they are ready [to mate]” DeFeo said. To avoid such behaviors, she suggests getting male cats neutered and female cats spayed at six months.
An excellent product gets rid of the odor quickly, completely, and permanently. Depending on the severity of the urine stain, how long it’s been sitting out, and its location, you may need to apply one or more times. The best urine remover is the one that requires the least applications and breaks down every last trace of urine.

There are a number of medical conditions that can cause cats to urinate outside their litter boxes, including kidney failure, urinary tract stones or crystals, diabetes and arthritis. Cats may also avoid the litter box because they have issues with the type of litter, as well as the cleanliness or placement of the litterbox.
Try adding borax to the wash load – use up to a cup per large load but don’t overfill the load so that all of it can move around well. Sometimes you will need to do more than one wash. Don’t dry until you no longer smell the urine or else it will set the smell.

Check clothing for urine. If any clothing has urine, add 1 cup (60 ml) of apple cider vinegar to the laundry detergent in your regular wash. If you still smell urine, add some enzymatic cleaner to your wash.[4]
“Your best defense as soon as you see an accident is to blot as much as you can with towels,” he said. “Then, put a few drops of green dish detergent and a little water on the area, place a towel over it and step on it so it absorbs as much as possible.”
The new fragrance in your home is wonderful until midnight when everything turns back into a pumpkin. Ah how I can relate to this scenario! After almost 30 foster dogs coming through my house (most not housebroken to start with) I know the battle with lingering odor well-and the frustration of having the dog go outside only to come in and find a blanket or rug to go on. And that feeling of never having your house clean! If none of the above cleaners work for you, you can always try a commercial product (of course natural is best!)-if you go that route I would recommend Biokleen Bac-out. I wish I had a magic solution, but cleaners aside, maybe I can offer some advice that can help.
You can buy washable ones on different sizes off Amazon. I did this 5 yrs ago when we got out puppies an put them by out back door. Even though they go out right before we go to to bed, theres still times one or the other will pee on it 2 or 3 times a week late at night or of im gpne to long during the day. They’re 5yrs old now. I just wash one at a time with only vinegar an air dry while I put the other down. Well worth the $$
This may be particularly true for dead animals that are decomposing in your home without your knowledge. “Animal carcasses are often hidden in crevices of the home or behind layers of sheetrock.” If this is the case, and you’re able to locate the source in your home, you may be able to tackle the decomposition odors.

You go to the pantry to get a fresh roll of paper towels and are relieved that they are the extra absorbent and the super strong type with the beefy guy on the package. Ripping open the package you assault the offensive sausage or mop up the little ocean of urine. Add a one-pound box of baking soda to your regular detergent and wash as usual, air-drying if possible. If you can still see or smell the soiling, wash again with an enzymatic cleaner — these break down pet-waste odors.
Clean furniture. smells love to hide in furniture. Your cat’s special chair may be host to all sorts of irksome smells. The type of furniture will dictate the best cleaning method, but you should always check the care labels before cleaning to make sure the piece isn’t dry clean only. Care labels marked with an S mean don’t clean with water, and X means dry clean only.
The type of stains that you want to remove is the most important. If it’s only urine, choose a specialized product that can clean effectively. But you can also choose a remover that has multiple uses which can be used on coffee, tea stains, and like wise.
Enzymes cleaner, soap and water, vinegar – none of these work. We’ve tried for years with all of these but our dog keeps going back to the same spots so obviously, the smell is attracting him. It drives me crazy.
