Chances are you were using a store bought cleaner that was a brand name in conjunction with a cleaning machine. These cleaners are soap based and as a result, do not remove the odor. Instead, what happens with these types of cleaners is that they attract dirt. They also do not have anything in them that works as an antibacterial agent to break down and remove the odor. You need to use a cleaner that will destroy and kill germs and bacteria that cause the odor. Genesis 950 is my go to cleaner. It is by far the best pet stain remover I have ever found.
However, if you do want to use the hydrogen peroxide, make sure you only ever use 3% solution and that you always check for color-fastness on an inconspicuous area first as it could bleach the fibers of the carpet, leaving a permanent light patch as a reminder of the accident!
Ah how I can relate to this scenario! After almost 30 foster dogs coming through my house (most not housebroken to start with) I know the battle with lingering odor well-and the frustration of having the dog go outside only to come in and find a blanket or rug to go on. And that feeling of never having your house clean! If none of the above cleaners work for you, you can always try a commercial product (of course natural is best!)-if you go that route I would recommend Biokleen Bac-out. I wish I had a magic solution, but cleaners aside, maybe I can offer some advice that can help.
Slowly pour your solution onto the site and gently scrub with paper towels or a soft brush. Let sit for 15 minutes, then dust with baking soda. When it’s dry, vacuum. You might need to do this a few times for tough stains or especially strong odors.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to remove odor from hardwood floors? We have 3 shih-tzus and 2 of them are 8 years and do have accidents. One of them is very overweight and I’m starting to suspect possible diabetes. She is going to vet this week. The male will go when we leave sometimes. I believe he gets mad at us for leaving him!!! We also have a 5 year old male that WILL NOT go in the house unless he is sick. The big difference is my husband and I were both working when we got the 2 eight year olds as puppies. I was not working when we got the 5 yr old and he was potty trained in less than 2 weeks!!! Lesson learned!!!

I didn’t have any fresh urine stains, but there is a spot that was my puppy’s favorite before he was fully house-trained. This product has a pleasant smell, and definitely gets rid of any doggy odor. I put two bottles in my carpet steamer, and the whole house smells great now. I tried it on a spot where my cats had a spat (cat spray!), THIS PRODUCT WORKED. The only reason it’s not five stars is because the bottles are TINY.
I have 3 dogs been having them for 2 years 1 is trained but the other two they go back and forward with the accidents and ive had enough withh the ammonia smell making me sick.i do everything thats possible take them on walks but sometimes they just rather come home and do their business here. Please help any suggestions are well appreciated .thank you
I called the company after using this product for a while because I needed them again. My son had crawled into my husbands arm chair and got sick right in the crack. The whole chair REEKED! So I asked them if they had something that worked as well on vomit stink because this chair was about to hit the curb. He said, SUN works on that too. Really! So I used it on the “vomit chair”, and my husband is in that chair at this very moment watching TV, vomit stink just a bad memory.

I have had this for a couple years and have had nothing but problems with it since I got it! Bissell is cheaply priced for a reason! I swore their vacuums off long ago, I should of never caved and got a rug scrubber made by them. This thing has been nothing but a pain, it does not clean at all! when my carpets were damp they appeared clean, once fully dried all stains were still there! And I used their expensive cleaning solutions! Then the dirty water started mixing with the clean water no fix there unless you want to buy a new water tank/bladder I wasn’t looking to spend more money on a piece of junk . Then it stopped spraying – fixed that issue by watching YouTube videos, now it leaks water out from some where that I can’t figure out, during use, and then when I shut it off I get a huge amount coming out from behind a wheel and end up with a puddle on the floor! Do not waste your money on any Bissell product! I know I won’t ever do it again, I’ll stick with Hoover & Eureka!
Kidney disease causes chemicals in urine to become concentrated and to cause a smell resembling ammonia. Kidney dysfunction can also cause high bacteria and protein levels in the urine, which will contribute to a foul, ammonia smell.
If your specific issue is trying to remove pet urine odor, you’re in for another treat altogether. Pet urine odor is one of the most difficult smells to remove from any surface, and at times requires you remove the flooring altogether, and replace it, if none of the less substantial solutions do the trick. Still, it can be done. Here’s how.
If you’ve got a carpet cleaner already, then this might be just the solution you’re looking for. If not, you can try and mix it in a spray bottle to take advantage of the lowered cost but you might be better off with one of the other standalone products we recommend.
Important: Bleach is very dangerous for our skin. During the whole process of preparation and applying the bleach use rubber gloves in order not to harm your skin. It is also recommended to apply some greasy hand cream on the hands before wearing gloves.
Rarely review anything but I had to for this product. First let me say that I have a graveyard of at least 100 cat urine neutralizer products… none of them have worked for me. This product, however, is AMAZING! I have two cats and they occasionally pee outside their litter box. Many covers have been destroyed and thrown away. I wish I had discovered this product sooner. I put the stained covers in the washer machine first with vinegar and let them soak for a few hours. Then I put them through the rinse cycle 2-3 times. After that I soaked them with this product overnight (I’m sure it doesn’t have to be that long, I just wanted to make sure the fabric soaked it up) and then rinsed and dried the covers. I smell NOTHING, the covers do NOT smell like urine and the product does not leave an after scent. The only problem I had was that the bottle is sooooooo small, but it is my fault for not noticing the size before buying. I will be purchasing this product again. I am so happy to finally find something that works!
Look, we all know that dog urine can be problematic. Even in the best of cases, when it’s noticed instantly, it has a tendency to seep into carpeting and sometimes under flooring. This leads to lasting odors in many cases, even where you’ve handled the stains super efficiently.
As for the cons, I like many others wish it had another 5 feet of cord as I have a large open floor plan in my home. If you have more of a traditional type of home this will probably not be an issue for you as you will not need more cord length.

Please don’t keep a pit outdoors. They need their people. You can use a puppy pad and train her to use it. I use adult human incontinence pads – the extra large size for my dog. They’re cheaper than the specialty dog ones. The other option is to check out eBay or Amazon for doggie diapers. They come in a disposable type and various cloth versions where you put a pad in it. The pet stores carry them, too, but they’re more expensive. Keep your dog sleeping beside you.
Well, the urine actually seeps right on down through the carpet, the pad, and into the floor sheathing (if you have that) where it stinks for a long time, and where the only remedy is, after the pee dries, to paint it over with a heavy coat of Kiltz or rip up the sheathing and replace it. It also spreads out over the floor slab (if you have that) and remains for a long time. Animals return to spots in your home that you don’t know about and relieve themselves again. The stink reduces your real estate value by $$$$.
Red/Pink Hematuria (fresh blood in the urine) related to urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney stone, or rarely cancer; consumption of red foods such as beets, blueberries, red food dyes, rhubarb; iron supplements; Pepto-Bismol, Maalox, and a variety of other drugs5; classic “port wine” color may indicate porphyria (genetic disorder) ***Consult your physician immediately if you suspect you have blood in your urine
Most of those which aren’t direct use enzymatic products are made to be used with deep cleaning machines of various stripes. They work great for your carpet anyway, so why not make sure that you get something specifically designed to take care of the assorted feces, vomit, and urine stains that plague many pet owners?
Add a one-pound box of baking soda to your regular detergent and wash as usual, air-drying if possible. If you can still see or smell the soiling, wash again with an enzymatic cleaner — these break down pet-waste odors.
Once the paper towel becomes somewhat dry (instead of “drenched”), spray on vinegar and water. Place another clean paper towel on top, then get a heavy object such as a book or a suitcase (depending on how big the pee was!) and lay it over the towel; let set to absorb for 1/2 hour or so. Then you can spray on hydrogen peroxide and wipe with a clean wet rag. Set the book on the spot again and let set another 1/2 hour. You can sprinkle baking soda on later once you think the spot is pretty removed. SOMETIMES YOU MUST REPEAT THIS APPLICATION. You can also use carpet freshener too.
UTIs tend to affect women and girls more, but men and boys can also develop UTIs. These infections are the result of bacteria entering the urinary tract. The bacteria make urine smell unpleasant and cause it to be cloudy or bloody.
In your lifetime, your kidneys filter more than one million gallons of water, enough to fill a small lake. Amazingly, one kidney can handle the task perfectly well. In fact, if you lose a kidney, your remaining kidney can increase in size by 50 percent within two months, to take over the job of both.3
For many pet owners, urine is the enemy, the smell just never comes out! Even though it’s messy, I would almost rather have my dogs have diarrhea in the house than pee on the floor. The stink of urine lingers and just will NOT go away. Diarrhea is awful, but a good scrubbing later, I can pretend it never happened.
An independent laboratory recently conducted multiple tests of our P.U.R.T. process to determine its effectiveness in treating pet urine odors and stains. In tests against the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine, this study found that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.9% of pet urine odors from carpets. To go one step further, the study also tested Chem-Dry’s ability to eliminate the bacteria that can be found in pet urine. When used along with our HCE (Hot Carbonating Extraction) cleaning process and a sanitizer, the study found that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.2% of the bacteria from pet urine stains in carpets.

Whether you’re taking care of years of build up of dog urine or a malcontent and spraying feline’s mess you’ll be glad to know that things can be handled. Make sure to give it some time to soak and you’ll be well on your way to a cleaner and better smelling floor.
Clean or dispose of the towels. Because the towels you used for absorbing the urine will have faint traces of your pet’s scent, it’s important to keep your pet from marking them again. Help your pet avoid the temptation by discarding the towel.
Great article Sally, definitely covers this topic in-depth! However, we’ve got some carpets in a rental apartment that have old, and I mean really old, and now somewhat crusty, pee. What would you recommend as the best carpet cleaner for old pet urine?
If you’re faced with set-in stains or smells you can’t get rid of, it may be time to call in a professional, as sometimes spot-removal isn’t enough, Hatch said. “Unfortunately, urine doesn’t just stay at the top of carpet, it soaks into carpet padding and backing and can even soak into the sub floor,” he said. Spot cleaning can only get the urine at the face fibers of the carpet, and to truly remove the bacteria and the odors they can create, you’ll need a professional, he said.
