If the extent of your pet odor problem is just a general pet smell (not urine), you’ve just encountered a best-case-scenario when it comes to pet odor removal. It’s not pleasant, and it’s still going to take some work to remove the odor from your home, but there are a number of pet odor removal solutions out there to take advantage of.
Rocco and Roxie has an OxyClean product. This carpet cleaner gets out the toughest stains including my error of Angry Orange stains. Spray the product on any stain, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then start working on it with paper towels.
Really helpful! The light sounds especially useful, as I have mostly black and other dark fabrics. Accidents are hard to spot! Our dog doesn’t actually pee in the floor, he is just one of those dogs that sprinkles when he is happy (and excited, scared, upset, sleeping, etc!)
Vacuum floors and upholstery. Dirty carpets and furniture can harbor bad smells that make your living areas stink. To remove dust and smelly particles, vacuum all the carpets in the house with a wide brush attachment. To remove dusty and musty smells from furniture, vacuum all upholstered furniture using an upholstery attachment.
If your cat urinates outside the box and has no health issues that are causing it then it has territorial issues. Make an area the “cat’s area” and don’t allow other pets to relax or hang out in “her special area”. She is marking a lot to mark it as hers, she feels she has no space of her own. Trust me, I’ve had cats for almost 50 years and I did not think the territory idea would work but it did. I saw it on Cat Whisperer show.
At Chem-Dry, our goal is to clean for your health and the health of your family. We provide a healthier, longer-lasting clean for a happier home. P.U.R.T. and our other Healthy Home cleaning products are safe and non-toxic for you, your children, and your pets.
The enzymes also destroy the pheromone in the urine stain. This is something I personally have never smelled, our noses can’t, but while vinegar may rid the urine smell, it will not destroy the pheromones. Also because my husband owns a carpet store, I can tell you a lot of times people clean the carpet, but if the urine is still in the pad underneath, or the sub floor, they are chasing their tails (pun intended) you need to be sure the pad and floor are also cleaned with the enzyme cleaner.
Start off by taking all of the furniture apart – pillows, blankets and the like – and vacuuming everything thoroughly. If the sofa and chairs have removable slipcovers or cushion covers, take those off for washing (details later). Get into the crevices of the furniture as deep as possible to remove all the hair, and flip the bed mattress to get both sides. On the floors, make sure to get under all of the furniture and in the corners, where “hair bunnies” tend to gather.
Thanks so much for sharing! Always looking for carpet cleaning tips at http://www.flippincleaners.com/carpet-cleaning/ We often let homeowners know that a simple rug doctor is a great investment for getting and keeping carpets clean….approx $400 and you can clean your carpets whenever you want. No special technical education needed either.
You love your cat. Of course! But that love could be tested just a bit when you walk into a room and are greeted by the unmistakable smell of cat urine. Why did he do it? How do you get rid of it? And — how do you prevent him from doing it again? Here’s how to clean up cat urine in 3 places: carpet, non-carpet surfaces and bedding.
After cleaning the pee and other items out of carpet, grab baking soda and some natural essential oils. I found a box of oils on amazon. Add tea tree oil and lavender to the baking soda. In fact, add whatever smell you would like for the olfactory. Add lots of drops to the baking soda and mix well. Shake this mixture all over the carpet. It needs to look like it just snowed. Get a brush, preferably with a long handle to protect your back, and agitate the baking soda into your carpet. Leave it on over night for best results and then vacuum. If you can’t wait that long, at least let it sit two hours. Baking soda and the oils are all natural so safe for humans and animals. This step has helped in creating a more earthy and pleasant smell in my home when I do the manic bi-monthly cleaning.
If you smell it but don’t know where it’s coming from, you’ll need to follow your nose or find the target area with a black light. Body fluids and certain vitamins contain phosphorus. Black lights emit an ultraviolet light that makes phosphorus glow.
Aveho Odor Removal Technology is an engineered material consisting of micro-sized particles that capture and physically bind odor-causing compounds, or catalytically convert the odor molecules into non-odorous molecules.  Impressive huh?  For those of you technically-challenged folks out there, here’s a translation:  Aveho is really cool, really tiny stuff that makes stink go away forever!
Technicians trained in odor removal through an IICRC approved instructor are taught the four general principles of eliminating unpleasant smells. They first attempt to locate and destroy the source of the smell. In some cases, like during fire and smoke restoration, this may be too difficult to do before cleaning the area. Once the source is destroyed, the technician will thoroughly clean any surfaces or items that were affected by the source. While carpets are often a primary spot for odors to take root, furniture, clothing, and drywall may also take on the scent if they are exposed long enough. These surfaces must be cleaned to prevent the smell from coming back.
It does have some shortcomings: this product works best on fresh stains. If you’re moving into a former hoarder’s abode with crystallized urine and floorboards then it’s not going to be sufficient but if things are in decent shape right now and you want to keep them that way it’s perfect.
That’s why we need the best cat urine remover for the job. But choosing a urine remover depends on lots of factors, considering you and your cat’s interest, the material that you’re going to apply on, and others.
I hope this provides an alternative for people whose floors or inhabitants have difficulties with vinegar. (I do use vinegar on other non-marble flooring tiles and glass when my daughter is not around and it works great). Also one one place where I just have grout flooring (more difficult than hard tiling to wash and remove odours) with grating inserted, I removed the metal gratings and washed those outside and, on the grouting flooring, used vinegar first, rinsed with water and dried and followed by a strong solution of oxyclean, rinsed and dried, and the strong male cat urine smell has gone.
If you have a puppy, an elderly dog, or a dog still mastering their potty training skills, you’ve dealt with pee in the house. Depending on what surface they go on, and how long it sits before you find it, that stubborn dog pee smell can really stick around! But it doesn’t have to.
Obviously the best long-term solution is to get the little guy going potty outside. I am not sure what your process is, but adding the use of a crate/kennel (or in your case pen) to the regime can be helpful, in addition to positive re-enforcement. It’s a total pain, but it really cuts down on the accidents and is worth it in the long run. So for example as soon as the puppy wakes up, take him outside to go potty. If he goes throw a party and have a little play session. If he doesn’t go within 5 minutes or so, bring him back inside and place him in his pen-there isn’t any fun time until his business is done. Anywhere from 5-15 minutes later repeat the above process. When he does go, he gets let out to play run around etc. etc. but not before. Again it’s a hassle, but it really cuts down on missing any accidents in hidden places, and they pick up quick on the positive re-enforcement and learn to hurry up and potty so they can play!
A smelly room is embarrassing, and it can prevent you from enjoying your living spaces the way you should. The secret to deodorizing a room is first getting rid of the source of the odor, which you can do with thorough cleaning. After that, it’s just a matter of absorbing any lingering odors and choosing your favorite air freshener to make everything smell great again.
I read this article and wanted to print it for a situation that we have here at our job with one of our employees (who has several cats and who brings their odors in with her). It is very offensive to our co-workers, and as her supervisor we’ve tried several things to eliminate the odor but nothing has worked so far. I need very badly to print this article but apparently the magazine holder is not allowing that so….
For mattresses, to remove cat urine the best thing to do is to make a double, triple or even quadruple batch of the cat urine smell remover to completely cover the stain and then really pour it on. Don’t be afraid of saturating the mattress. The cat urine has gone deep into the mattress, so you need to make sure that there’s enough solution to go deep into the mattress as well. The solution has to reach the cat urine to neutralize it. You could treat the cat urine in the mattress in the morning so that the solution can work through the day. The mattress will often be dry enough for use by bedtime.
I recently cleaned out my closet, i keep my room closed and no cats allowed at all times. I gave a bag of clothes to a neighbor and she said she threw them away cause they smelled like cat pee. ugh. anyway now i feel the need to wash all the clothes i have. i realllllllllllly hope the ACV works. I have no clue why they would smell like cat pee, i highly doubt my cats are breaking in there and closing the door behind them. This apartment gets really damp when it rains maybe thats the issue. any good spray fresheners to use on the carpet or walls or wherever? i dont want the freshly washed clothes to just soak up the smell again.
