Depending on how long ago it happened, finding the place where your cat urinated can be either obvious or something that demands a little bit more effort. Using a blacklight can help you to identify normally invisible urine deposits – for serious issues with inappropriate urination, a blacklight is an invaluable tool.

Vanessa Beaty, How is it a good idea to bathe a dog w/ peroxide? Why don’t you try pouring peroxide on your skin to test your “magic” solution out before you spew garbage disguised as advise like this ?
Cat urine is made from a combination of urea, urobilin, uric acid, sodium, creatinine, and other pheremones and electrolytes. It’s important to choose a urine remover that’s designed to neutralize and remove all of these components effectively.
I’ve used this in litter boxes, trash cans, dog beds…it’s very effective without adding perfumes or other scents. I have also added a small amount to the wash when laundering litter mats and dog beds with excellent results.

We replaced the carpeting in our family room last year and before we installed the new carpet, I doused the concrete floor with enzymatic cleaner. It did a fabulous job on removing the old cat urine smell.
Anyone with small children, pets, or a smoker in the house knows all too well that room deodorizers and air fresheners only mask the smell temporarily and don’t solve your real air cleaning needs. You’re left buying more and more and more to constantly mask offending odors. To gain fresh, clean air, the odors in your home must be neutralized and cleaned completely. Odors like strong cooking smells, chemical fumes, and tobacco smoke are particularly dangerous for people with asthma, allergies, COPD, or MCS. As the air reaches the lungs, these bothersome odors and fumes trigger allergic and asthmatic reactions.
Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide that is higher in concentrate than 3%. Bleaching may occur on some carpets with a stronger solution. Read the label on the Hydrogen Peroxide carefully. The label will state the strength.
Replace the padding underneath. For stubborn stains that you suspect may have soaked through the carpet into the padding, replacing the padding itself will help a lot. Pull up the carpet, cut a sample of the padding and bring it to a home improvement store to find padding of equal thickness. Cut out the stained padding and replace it with a piece of the new padding.
The only way to get rid of urine odor is to use a product that has an active enzyme in it. Vinegar will only temporarily get rid of the odor. If the urine gets into the pad of the carpet, you’re sunk. If you replace your carpet, it may be worth while to get a pad that has the plastic cover to prevent it from getting wet. I’ve done this and am happy I spent the few extra dollars.
If your bed linens and clothing items are machine washable, first rinse the spot in a sink with cool water, then add them to the washing machine with detergent and a cup of baking soda or a quarter cup of cider vinegar. If you can still smell the urine after the cycle is complete, add enzyme cleaner to the load (following instructions on the package) and run the cycle again. Remember never to use bleach (when mixed with ammonia and cat urine, it can cause harmful gases). Always air dry linens, as the heat of the dryer may lock in the smell before it’s completely gone. You may need to re-wash one or more times until the scent is completely gone.
Urine Pre-Conditioner removes odor while breaking up and liquefying deposits for fast decontamination. This pre-treatment can be used on wet-cleanable carpet, upholstery, draperies, bedding, mattresses, and clothing.
Thanx, I’m going to try this for my clothes. My bedroom door doesn’t have a knob but my cat comes and goes. But a week or so ago I couldn’t understand why she kept coming to me very early in bed. I just petted her and said go back to sleep. Here, what was going on, the dog was getting back at her by sleeping up against the door. So, she peed on my clothes that had been on my cedar chest but the dog had knocked off because he liked the cool feeling of the chest. She had been peeing on my hubbys shoes last year because she had a grudge against him lol.
If the carpet odors are longstanding and accompany urine stains that you can’t remove, hire a professional carpet cleaner. These experts have a wide range of machines and solvents at their disposal to clean your carpet, remove odors and make it look good as new.
If you can still smell the odor once the area is dry, you may have to repeat the process – which is a bit of a pain, but is still the best method for how to get pet urine smell out of carpet in your home.
2. Dead Animal – yep, we had the chance to test this one out, too! Our cat caught a tiny mouse and brought it into the house to show it off. Naturally, the tiny mouse promptly escaped into an even tinier crack between our office cabinets and the wall. There was no way for us to get in there to get it out, and after a few days we realized that the mouse had died in the wall. Phew! I grabbed the Stinkers!, sprayed inside and around the area of the crack as best as I could, and then gave the rest of the room a few quick spritzes for good measure. Done and done! I thought that I would have to spray the Stinkers! a few times over the next couple of days, but once was enough!
Enzymes cleaner, soap and water, vinegar – none of these work. We’ve tried for years with all of these but our dog keeps going back to the same spots so obviously, the smell is attracting him. It drives me crazy.
That’s a great question Gary. Regarding how to remove dog urine from carpet that has set in, we recommend the same products and techniques. People really rave about Nature’s Miracle and some members of our team have used it as well. We’ve read that it performs well for urine that has dried up, so I would recommend purchasing it and seeing how it works. Best of luck!
Whether it be from pet urine or a spill, once you have thoroughly removed all residue and think you have it all, place several layers of white paper towel on the freshly cleaned wet area. Next, weight the paper towel down. I use a large piece of ceramic/porcelain tile, and let it sit for about 48 hours. You will be amazed at what dries up into the paper towel instead of drying in the top fibers of your carpet.
