I used to run 3 subsidised housing complexes. Got tired of tenant after tenant getting charged for the same damages… So I got my carpet guy to teach me how to remove 99% of all stains and odors. This is a slow process, but very effective. Take a used steam iron… fill with water and heat. Get a white towel. ONLY a white towel. Dyed towels may bleed colors. Soak white towel to drippy wet. Use clean water or your favorite cleaner. Put the dripping towel over the stain/odor. Sit the hot iron on the wet towel. Watch carefully for the grunge to show on the towel. Keep rinsing out the towel. Keep putting steam iron on towel over damaged spot. Rinse iron and towel as needed. Repeat until no scent or stains appear. DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED. If so you may burn or damge carpet. I have gotten blood, urine, kool aid, wine and ink out this way…. many many times. Didnt work on mustard.
Large volumes of concentrated alkaline salts and strong odors that come from bacteria feeding on the waste products contained in the urine can make professional cleaning necessary. The alkaline salts can create a very high pH environment (10 – 10.4) and destabilize normally stable dyes that cause bleeding. This is very difficult to address without steam cleaning and specialized cleaner.
Most cleaners and odor removers work their best if you attack the problem as soon as it happens. The quicker you get to the disaster the better off you’ll be. Enzymatic solutions are particularly useful this way since fresher material will find the material more “palatable” in the immediate aftermath.
This isn’t the cleaner you’re looking for if you’ve got a huge, carpeted home. But if you’ve got small spots of carpet that occasionally become the plaything of your favorite furred companion it’s a great way to handle things without having to pay for a full upright.
As for the cons, I like many others wish it had another 5 feet of cord as I have a large open floor plan in my home. If you have more of a traditional type of home this will probably not be an issue for you as you will not need more cord length.

CR’s take: This affordable Hoover is lightweight, inexpensive, and a good choice for those who have small carpets or area rugs. When empty, this model weighs only 12 pounds, and it weighs 20 pounds when full with a gallon of water, making it easy to move around the house. Notably, this model doesn’t come with a hose, so you might not be able to clean tight areas, such as stairs, as easily, and it doesn’t have an extra carrying handle. Overall, this Hoover is very good at cleaning your carpets and leaving them dry.
Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake, which can irritate the lining of your bladder. Make sure your diet has plenty of magnesium, and avoid sugar (including fructose and soda) and non-fermented soy products due to their oxalate content. Finally, don’t hold it. As soon as you feel the urge to go, go! Delaying urination is detrimental to the health of your bladder due to overdistension.
Industrial urine odor and stain remover. Comes in a 4 ounce concentrate which makes 1/2 gallon of ready to use odor and stain removal solution. New technology odor remover eliminates odors immediately and permanently on contact. Remove Urine specializes in odor and stain removal. If SUN does not eliminate the odor we will refund your money. We are committed to helping you totally eliminate your unpleasant odors and stains. For 16 years, we did odor and stain removal professionally. We will provide you with professional help and information. The biggest problem pet owners face today in eliminating urine odor is effectively locating all the urine residue. Once you have located the urine you can effectively treat it with SUN solution and remove 100% of the odor. Urine creates two different problems: 1. Odors 2. Stains. Stains are easy to find because they can be seen. The odors are more difficult because they cannot be seen. There are 5 different type stains created by urine. The best way to remove each varies. How to remove the odor. Step One: Locate all the urine residue. Step Two: Treat the urine residue with SUN solution. That’s it! If you find all the urine residue and treat it with the SUN solution it will eliminate the odor immediately, completely and permanently. To locate the urine you need to find where it was deposited and determine how far it has spread and how deep it has soaked. Again, finding all the urine residue (so it can be treated) is the key to success. A small pet weighing 5 pounds will eliminate 2 ounces of urine twice a day. In a year’s time this can add up to 11 gallons of urine. 4 ounces of urine can spread to cover an area 9 inches in diameter below the carpet surface. Step One: Find The Urine. Tools to help find the urine: 1. Eyes 2. Nose 3. Black Light 4. Moisture Detector.
Try an enzymatic cleaner to start. Wet the area with cool distilled water, pouring a small amount around the perimeter of the stain, moving from the outside of the stain toward the center. Spray an enzymatic cleaner on the wet spot, and allow it to sit overnight. If your carpet is wool, make sure you’re using a wool-safe cleaner.
I that’s a little drastic and not fair to the dog/puppy. You don’t have to cut the sub floor out, if you do it right and there is no visible stain on carpet you can replace the area of stained padding for the sub-floor paint over affected area with kills paint, available at Walmart and lumber stores return carpet to use.
Assuming the pee has not saturated the padding underneath, I have used Odormute, for over fifteen years with excellent results. Originally, I was told by a local police that they use this product to remove the blood from cement at crime scenes. It is natural enzyme product and totally safe as far as I can tell and I am a fanatic about natural products. You will still need to use a cleaner on the carpet; nonetheless, the odor should be gone.
NOTE: ** Several complained on here that the shampooer only comes with a “tiny” bottle of the solution. The free bottle that came with mine was a 24 ozs. bottle. It says on the bottle to use 4 capfuls of the solution per tank of water, but the instructions that came with the machine as well as the larger bottle of solution that I bought in anticipation of receiving a “tiny” bottle, say to only use one capful. The cap holds 2 ozs. of solution. That is all I have used in the machine so far and it seems to work perfectly. I would think that you would be able to get several uses out of the bottle at that rate before you have to purchase a new bottle, BUT that having been said, if you use the 4 capfuls as the bottle suggests, then you would only get 6 uses out of the one bottle. That having been said, if you are concerned you will run out before you finish carpets in your home, buy a bottle when you buy the machine or before it arrives. 🙂 ****
For as little as $130 you can get one of the top performers in Consumer Reports’ latest carpet cleaner tests. Take note that these machines are powerful—and heavy. The best easily remove embedded dirt and stains without leaving a trail of water and a soggy stretch of carpet behind.
Uncontrolled diabetes is known to cause your urine to have a sweet or fruity or, less commonly, a yeasty smell. In the past, doctors diagnosed diabetes by pouring urine into sand to see if it was sweet enough to attract bugs. Other physicians just dipped a finger in and took a taste. Fortunately, today’s physicians have access to far more elegant diagnostic tools.
Yes! Thank you for saying that! Real (raw) food is the only way they should eat. I feed my German Shepherd Dog raw meaty bone, raw meat and raw organs. It upsets me knowing animals are forced to eat commercial food with diseased and euthenized animals in the ingredients. (Of course it’s not listed but it’s in there)
Normal urine is clear and has a straw-yellow color. While the odor of urine can vary somewhat, in most cases, it does not have a strong smell. With dehydration, the urine is more concentrated and may have a stronger ammonia scent than normal. Consumption of certain foods, such as asparagus (which can impart a characteristic odor to urine), and taking some medications may be causes for changes in the odor of urine. The presence of bacteria in the urine, such as with a urinary tract infection (UTI), can affect the appearance and smell of urine. When there is an infection in the urinary tract, the urine may take on a foul-smelling odor as well as appear cloudy or bloody. A burning sensation during urination may be a symptom of a UTI. The urine may also have an abnormally sweet odor in uncontrolled diabetes, and some rare genetic conditions can also cause the urine to have an abnormal or strange odor.
I’m interested in the intersection between design and technology—whether for drywall or robotic vacuums—and how the resulting combination affects consumers. I’ve written about consumer advocacy issues for publications like The Atlantic, PC Magazine, and Popular Science, and now I’m happy to be tackling the topic for CR. Here’s how to clean vomit from carpet. The acid in vomit can stain a surface fast, so wipe it up as soon as you can. Use a dustpan or scraper to remove the larger chunks. Blot with a towel to clean up the moisture. Mix a solution of 2 cups of warm water, 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap and 1/2 cup of vinegar. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the mixture and apply to the soiled area. Blot lightly. You may need to do this a couple of times to remove a tough stain. When the stain is gone, remove cleaner by putting a cloth dipped in clean water on the area. Blot dry with a towel.
I am stressed out about about my carpet, dog urine is becoming a NIGHTMARE. I take my 1 1/2 yr old dog out at least 5 times a day, she doesn’t have accidents during day, overnight is the problem, I know how to fix her from urinating, she now sleeps in her crate but my problem I just can’t seem to figure out is how to remove old stains & odor from carpet??? I have tried shout urine destroyer solution, baking soda, vintages/water mixture, bissell pet urine/odor cleaning solution, I always made sure to blot the urine spot w/ paper towels to remove most of the wetness, added the solution after soaking up but NOTHING I’ve tried works, I bought a Hoover carpet cleaner in hopes it would do the job but just seems like the urine smell had gotten stronger. I feel hopeless, i live in apartment & it’s stressing me out even more because I don’t want to lose my security deposit, so I’m DESPERATE for any advice.
Bladder stones may occur as a result of concentrated urine forming crystals and usually occur only in men. The urine is also very dark and may sometimes be accompanied by some blood.3 Kidney stones can result in a constant need to pee, ability to only urinate a little at a time, pain while urinating, and possibly even blood in the urine.4
Add a one-pound box of baking soda to your regular detergent and wash as usual, air-drying if possible. If you can still see or smell the soiling, wash again with an enzymatic cleaner — these break down pet-waste odors.
Many of the cheaper cleaners simply won’t work on set in stains and odors. If that’s the case for you, then you’ll need to make sure that you get it with something strong, soak it, and leave it for a considerable period of time.

Commercial repellents are available in the form of sprays and contain different chemicals or natural compounds such as cayenne pepper that dogs don’t like and will avoid. If the dog has already soiled the carpet, clean it using an enzymatic cleaner or vinegar, and allow the carpets to dry completely. Spray the repellents generously and reapply as indicated on the label of the product you use.
this little dog keeps sneaking off and using it in the house. .. after being outside with the other dogs… I keep smelling urine…. I can’t stand it..I tried vinegar. ..is there such a thing to detour them from using it in the house. .??????
To get your house to not smell like your pets, start by vacuuming all of the floors, carpets, and furniture in your house. Then, wipe down any upholstered furniture with warm soapy water and let it air dry, which will help eliminate odors trapped in the fabric. You should also machine wash your bedding, your pet’s bed, and your pet’s toys to get rid of any odors coming from them. Also, try opening up all of your windows and setting up an air purifier.
Ah how I can relate to this scenario! After almost 30 foster dogs coming through my house (most not housebroken to start with) I know the battle with lingering odor well-and the frustration of having the dog go outside only to come in and find a blanket or rug to go on. And that feeling of never having your house clean! If none of the above cleaners work for you, you can always try a commercial product (of course natural is best!)-if you go that route I would recommend Biokleen Bac-out. I wish I had a magic solution, but cleaners aside, maybe I can offer some advice that can help.
Add a bit of bleach into the water (ratio of 1:10) and stir it. Apply the resulting mixture on the spot where your dog left some pee. In 20 minutes wash the whole surface or even the whole carpet with the water.
First off, let me start by saying, I have 4 cats, a Labrador retriever and 2 male humans that also live inside the house with me. The main “mess” is the oldest female cat, who hates anything but herself, so she pees on the carpet. If you put a clean, new cat box where she pees, she will pee next to it or make a new spot elsewhere. She was born and spent the first 4 months of her life in a cage in the pound so she has “issues”, we will leave it at that. No one else soils the carpet only she does. Unless they are “sick”. ‘Nuff said? So we are talking a daily weedle or two in the same spot on the carpet. I have always used my Little Green Machine to clean this up, but after paying a pro company to come do the entire job for $150 each time and only having it done 2-3 times /year, I decided I should save the money and buy one of these things based on the reviews on here. I did not purchase this machine on Amazon.com, but rather from Costco.com at a better discount.
I really hope you don’t have any pets. You’re part of the problem of over crowded pounds, unnecessary euthenasia and why some dogs have a hard time getting adopted. My dog has problems peeing in the house because she’s scared all the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if her constant fear, flinching, shakes and anxiety was caused by someone just like you.
Basically, the gadget is an Ultraviolet or ‘Black’ light which has an LED, low energy bulb. Just shine it over your carpet or upholstery and those little ‘whoopsies’ will become visible so you can deal with them.
After applying vinegar to the pee spots and sucking it up with a wet vac…the spots where vinegar was applied shine bright yellow under black light. Does that mean the vinegar created a worse problem? Or that the pee is still there? Any ideas?
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder infections sometimes warrant urgent medical attention so you should be alert to symptoms. Besides foul smelling urine, other signs of a UTI are that you may feel the need to urinate more often, have sudden urges to pee, feel like the bladder isn’t fully empty even after you have peed, have a pain in your lower abdomen, and generally experience aches and tiredness. If you have back pain, fever, chills, or a burning pain when you pee, you should rush to your doctor at the earliest.5
I just recently bought a Bissell ProHeat 2X® Steam Cleaner as we have an 8 month old Boxer that still has accidents.. With the steam cleaner I used Bissell 2X Pet Stain & Odor Formula.. For the smaller areas where she still has some tiny accidents I have used Bissell Pet Stain & Odor Remover – Spray, I’m very sensitive to smells (not like an animal though ) and I have been unable to smell the urine since using these products. I have also noticed when she has another “accident” it’s not in the area I have cleaned, it will be in a new area..
It’s a good idea to wait until the cleaner is on sale – we have a Vax cleaner which dries the carpet as well – you can use detergent, then a rinse and then do ‘dry’ passes until you are happy that as much water as possible has been removed. We have had this machine for some years and have found it very good.
What you are smelling may just be her natural dog odor once the shampoo’s fragrance has worn off. If it smells like it’s something else, try to figure out if she is getting into something that gives her that smell.
Slowly pour your solution onto the site and gently scrub with paper towels or a soft brush. Let sit for 15 minutes, then dust with baking soda. When it’s dry, vacuum. You might need to do this a few times for tough stains or especially strong odors.
