Still. As someone who has two cats that she loves very, very much, I can’t help but feel like they’ve committed a special kind of wrong when one of them urinates on something of mine or my children’s. It’s just so violating.
This homemade urine stain remover works very well. Just bought a brand new Poang chair from Ikea and of course the first thing that the cat does is pee on it. I was SO upset because the cushions on those chairs are practically impossible to get back in. I did this treatment once and it lightened the stain but did not remove it. Do not put items in the dryer unless you are 100% certain the stain is gone! I soaked it the next day with half vinegar and half water and then did the treatment again after that. It’s finally gone and, though I’ve spent at least 4 hours getting the cushions back in, my chair is put back together. And kitty is in the dog house.

The PurAyr™ process is natural and effective thanks to a simple element we call Oxygen. Most of the offensive and potentially harmful odors we experience are created by organic compounds such as bacteria, mold or incomplete combustion (smoke, soot, etc..). Although completely different in nature, these contaminants have at least one thing in common, they are held together by carbon bonds. When organic contaminants are exposed to the PurAyr™ gases, composed of purified Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and Ozone (O3), they quickly begin to break down into the simple elements they were made from, the PurAyr™ gases in turn fall harmlessly back into Oxygen (O2). In essence we are speeding up time and doing what nature would take care of eventually.
Something to try in the meantime though, would be to close kitten off. When mine was a kitten I litter trained her in the bathroom by keeping her food, water, and a big, clean litter box in the bathroom. Then I would either gate it off or shut the door if she was climbing over the gate. You can spend time in there with her, pop her in her box every hour or so, and just help her get familiarized with the box and litter. Sometimes with kittens you just have to help them define their potty-boundaries.
1. We have removed all blankets from my daughters bed leaving just the plastic cover during the day when we are all gone, as many sites state cats hate the feel and sound of plastic. She urinated on the bed.

Although litter box is great for keeping your cat wastes, sometimes, even the best litter box can’t prevent the smell from getting out. And some cats even do their own business outside on the yard or even on your carpet. If that happens for a long time, the odor that was built up might become awfully smelly. Not like pooping which your cat will feel like doing in places like litter box. The urine is a way for cats to mark their territories so you might see your cat peeing in unexpected places.
When I moved into this house the carpets smelt of cat pee which 2 of my dogs peed over them, not wanting to change the carpets until I decorate I used a steam cleaner on them, my dogs no longer pee there and I can’t smell any either. May be worth a try with a steam cleaner. I have found the small hand held steam cleaners better than those for the floors.

Cover the stain with paper towels or rags and walk lightly over or place something heavy on top to soak up any excess liquid. Sprinkle a generous handful of baking soda over the stain when no more liquid can be pulled up, and mix together ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish liquid. Slowly pour the solution over the stain and baking soda. Gently scrub the mixture into the carpet fibers with a scrub-brush or cloth, and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Vacuum the area thoroughly. For tough stains, repeat the above steps.
Rosemary, as for who and why, that’s tough. I have two cats and when things happen, it’s usually somewhat of a guessing game. However, one of my cats is considerably more spiteful, and territorial, than the other. So most of the time, even though she’s a lovely animal, it’s a fair bet to point a finger at that one. I mention territorial because it may be possible that she/he was upset about an unwelcome (to the cat, at least) house guest. Has this been a fairly isolated incident? I only ask because if it’s happening frequently, you may be right, and the cat may not be feeling well. One last thing, did the suitcase get urine on it, too? Or did the clothes catch it all?
