Spray enzyme cleaner over the area. Non-toxic and effective, enzymatic cleaners work by breaking down stains into their basic elements, eliminating the compounds that create smells and stains. Using an enzymatic cleaner is the best way to help break down the proteins left over from the urine, removing the smell as well as the impulse for the pet to urinate in the same spot again.
Hydrogen peroxide is another great substance when it comes to breaking down the “crystals” of urine and pulling out stains. Combine it with naturally deodorizing baking soda, and you have another great solution for cleaning up stains.
One of the universal means removing unpleasant odors is vinegar. It is basically suitable for removing both dog and cat urine. The big advantage of it is that smell of the vinegar evaporates very well. The best possible scenario is to react immediately as soon as you saw that your favorite cat or dog created a puddle on the carpet.

It happens to even the best dogs. Accidents. Urine stains. Both unsightly and with that rank smell every dog owner comes to loathe. Sometimes you might even get a little bit of brown in there, and your formerly pristine carpet is now looking like a war zone and smelling like a barn.
As our aim is not just to wash the spot but to prevent our dog from peeing there again we should try to use some ingredients which has very strong smell. Using vodka or alcohol (as they have such a strong odor themselves) will help to avoid the future repetition of the pee smell situation. In order to eliminate the smell from the carpet surface we need to apply vodka by wetting the spot with the cloth or spraying it with the spray bottle. After applying the alcohol we should rub the surface with some force. After rubbing we should take a dry paper towel and wipe the remaining liquid from the carpet. We should again and again wipe the surface until the paper towel will remain completely dry.
3. Works very well at stain removal using just the beater bar/floor tool and no attachment/hand held for tough foot traffic stains. I have not used it to remove set in pet stains so far as I use a “cat urine” eliminator “Get Serious” to remove the cat urine smell and it also removes the stains. I haven’t tried to remove old urine stains yet with it since I have none after having used GET SERIOUS. It does remove yellowed spots where I have allowed the cat urine to set for long periods (because it was behind a piece of furniture that only gets moved once a month when we move it to vac under it), but a month is hardly time to judge a yellow urine stain as “set in”. I have removed brown rust colored stains that the last professional carpet shampooer company “brought up” (Funny, they were in the middle of an open room and at the base of our stairs where no stain was prior to their coming and the stain wasn’t there until we refused for the umpteenth time their attempt to up-sell us on worthless products!!) and I had previously been unable to get that stain out using my Little Green Machine without it coming back up to the surface after a few weeks. I have only had this machine two weeks and have used it on the room 3 times in order to do a deep thorough clean and also to try and get some pet hair out. I have used it in “spots”, too but only a total room clean 3 times.
I have 2 older poms, Bear is 10 and had a bad time for several months of drinking every drop of water, several times a day and then constantly having accidents all over the house. And every time I took them out, he went a lot! First vet visit I was told that his urine was too watered to tell if he had any infection. Then told they wanted him brought back for expensive testing to check for cushings disease. Since I couldn’t afford $500-$1000 in testing medications, I decided to change their dry food to something more reputable. Since taking them off just 6 and on to nature’s balance then blue wilderness (slightly more affordable) Bear is doing great! Maybe 2-3 accidents in last 5 months! (That may have been my fault for not getting them outside for too long) I am not trying to talk bad about any vets or food labels, I just want to share this experience because it may be helpful to someone.
Most of those which aren’t direct use enzymatic products are made to be used with deep cleaning machines of various stripes. They work great for your carpet anyway, so why not make sure that you get something specifically designed to take care of the assorted feces, vomit, and urine stains that plague many pet owners?
Vacuum up loose debris from the area to be treated. Remove other debris by blotting the area with a wet towel.Soak treatment area with clean, warm water. Rinse the towel and soak up any excess water leaving the area damp.Pour OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator on the prepared area.Spread the OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator into the area gently working it into the carpet. Pour Freshwater over the treated area. Apply pressure to the area by standing or walking on it. Allow the formulation to have at least 10 minutes of contact time before removing.Use a clean absorbent towel to dry or soak up excess water. Allow to dry and vacuum up the visible residual.
For the record I used the 2X Pet Stain & Odor Formula 99K52 and LOVED it, it took stains out that I didn’t think would ever come out as they had been there so long. It worked so well that I’m not going to replace this old rug for awhile as it’s not looking too bad anymore. Yes, I can still see very faint residual marks where the red clay foot prints had stained it but I know where to look, if you just came in you wouldn’t see them at all. I was amazed at it’s stain cleaning ability.
In every second house people have their favorite pet and all of them from time to time cause problems which smell. Usually pets have a tray or they wait patiently when they will go for a walk. It happens quite often that the pet does not want to wait and behaves inappropriately: for some reason pees exactly on our new favorite carpet which we bought just recently or even received as a present from our grandmother. Anyone who was trying to get rid of pee smell and succeeded is getting pissed every time it is happening again. We will investigate best and simplest ways which remove urine properly.
Love this thanks.. however what is the ratios for using it in the carpet cleaner?? I have three dogs and the youngest one who isnt so young anymore likes to go where ever she wants so now the others are following suit!!
Replace the padding underneath. For stubborn stains that you suspect may have soaked through the carpet into the padding, replacing the padding itself will help a lot. Pull up the carpet, cut a sample of the padding and bring it to a home improvement store to find padding of equal thickness. Cut out the stained padding and replace it with a piece of the new padding.
For more stubborn stains and aromas, there are several green enzymatic cleaners you can find to spray on your carpet or, if you have older stains to tackle, consider renting a carpet-cleaning machine from a local store. Rinse the tank out well before use and don’t use the chemical-heavy cleanser that’s often sold with the rental. Instead, Bond recommends using a natural cleaner or a combination of white vinegar and water.
I’m interested in the intersection between design and technology—whether for drywall or robotic vacuums—and how the resulting combination affects consumers. I’ve written about consumer advocacy issues for publications like The Atlantic, PC Magazine, and Popular Science, and now I’m happy to be tackling the topic for CR. “Clean up pet accidents by first blotting up the area and then adding a white distilled vinegar-and-water solution. Blot until it is almost dry. Then sprinkle baking soda over the area and let it dry. Vacuum up the residue the next day.”
anything with enzymes will work in a spray bottle also , i have same issue ! going to have to replace carpet and not sure what to put back down ! have you tried some pee pads ? just lay a couple down at night !
To relate to the throwing up issue my cat apparently has a sensitive stomach. I’ve tried high end brands purchased at the vet’s office to low cost foods. He doesn’t throw up if he eats soft canned food or people food. Something in the cat food itself is causing it. So in case this is your issue- I found Hill’s Healthy Balance. I’ve found it at our local Fleet Farm. I assume you can find it wherever. My cat is 12 years old and has always been fairly skinny. I didn’t know what else to do for the poor thing. However, since finding this food he has nearly stopped vomiting all together. He may throw up once in a blue moon now. He also clearly has gained about 1 to 1.5 pounds and looks healthy. The food is fairly expensive but he is so much healthier and he goes through less food/uses litterbox less. So you save money in the end!
The only possible case when you can use the iodine to remove the urine smell is the case when you have a dark carpet. Prepare weak solution of the iodine (15 drops of iodine should be diluted in 1 liter of water). The diluted iodine is applied on the spot for 5-7 minutes. After that you should rinse the carpet with the textile soaked in warm water.

You don’t have to accept this as part of your adventure with your favorite furry friends. Get a cleaner, get the right shampoo, and you’ll be glad to know that there is an end in sight to what some consider the primary disadvantage of pet ownership. Just make sure you do your research and you’re good to go and well on your way to an odor and stain free home that you thought was an impossibility since you brought Fido home from the pound.

The only way to get rid of urine odor is to use a product that has an active enzyme in it. Vinegar will only temporarily get rid of the odor. If the urine gets into the pad of the carpet, you’re sunk. If you replace your carpet, it may be worth while to get a pad that has the plastic cover to prevent it from getting wet. I’ve done this and am happy I spent the few extra dollars.
I have tried everything to house train my puppy and nothing is working he has peed on my carpet and the smell of ammonia is making me sick! I bought a shampooer and have tried everything to get out the smell even vineger and baking soda the smell is still here ,please someone help!
Here at Chem-Dry, we love our pets. They brighten up our day and they’re always there to support us, through thick and thin. However, they can make it a real challenge to keep your home clean, healthy and smelling fresh when pet accidents occur.
I have a female pitbull who is somewhat trained, and by that I mean she does well when I’m awake and goes to the restroom when I take her outside but during the night when I sleep she gets up without me noticing and uses the restroom on my carpet. She used to cry when she needed out but has recently stopped and left me with surprises in the morning. I’ve recently moved her to outside and I hate it because she is my sleeping buddy. What should I do?
