The ONLY thing that helps the smell of dried urine is to SEAL the subfloor with a shellac or polyurethane and then proceed to either put new carpet, or in my case….ceramic tile down., Nothing will totally get the smell of urine out of a carpet or a subfloor other than throwing it away or sealing it up. You can use products that will MASK it temporarily but don’t expect it to disappear.
An independent laboratory recently conducted multiple tests of our P.U.R.T. process to determine its effectiveness in treating pet urine odors and stains. In tests against the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine, this study found that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.9% of pet urine odors from carpets. To go one step further, the study also tested Chem-Dry’s ability to eliminate the bacteria that can be found in pet urine. When used along with our HCE (Hot Carbonating Extraction) cleaning process and a sanitizer, the study found that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.2% of the bacteria from pet urine stains in carpets.
Open windows. There’s nothing like some nice, fresh breeze to air out bad smells. In spring, summer, and fall, open windows throughout the house to create a breeze that will blow fresh air in one window and bad smells out the other.
My cat Chancey a male never had a problem with urine till someone threw Smokey a female out of a window of a car and then I kept her; they say cats are territory and he is acting out you could say he is jealous;I clean the spot with peroxide dish soap and vinegar; when it is totally dry I then saturte the area with baking powder for 2 months and I cover the area with 2 garbage bags I leave the bags on if he pees again all you do is to wipe with paper towels ;and spray the mixture don’t smell a thing!
Liver trouble can also result in urine that is musty smelling.14 Because your liver needs to break down urea in the body, if it malfunctions it causes excess buildup of ammonia. The ammonia passes out through your urine, causing that trademark foul smelling pee.15
The shade, light or dark, also changes. If it has no color at all, that may be because you’ve been drinking a lot of water or taking a drug called a diuretic, which helps your body get rid of fluid. Very dark honey- or brown-colored urine could be a sign that you’re dehydrated and need to get more fluids right away. It may also be a warning sign of liver problems, so see your doctor if it doesn’t get better after a day or so.
If I had any doubts whatsoever about this spray, they were gone after the memory foam mattress incident. I love my memory foam mattresses so when my old one had a huge hole eaten out of it by one of my dogs, I chopped it up and made dog beds. Inevitably, someone pee’d on it and I pulled out my trusty bottle of SUN dilute. I had to use a lot because of the foam, the pee went into the foam, every single layer. So I opened the bottle and slowly poured the SUN over the pee spot. I could actually SEE the pee changing colors!!!! Where the pee was in the foam you could see it had stained the foam but the SUN changed it back, so this truly convinced me that something in this takes pee out.
Cats love to rub their smell on the corners of couches, chairs, tables, walls, doors, fridges, bench bases, or anything else they can potentially mark with their scent glands (ever see your cat rubbing their face on your legs?). Try wiping furniture with vinegar and washing all curtains, too.
Also wish it had some type of a way to adjust the vigor in which it scrubs the carpet, it is just sooo powerful that I didn’t want to chance it on my more delicate area rug that I have. Don’t get me wrong if I had to choose I would rather it be super powerful as it is but it would be nice if this was an option, hint, hint…
If you suffer from the dog/cat pee problem and don’t have the ability or money to install tile, then buy indoor/outdoor carpet. The new stuff at Lowes feels like real carpet without the problems of it.
I have been told by an animal behaviorist about this product for ridding your carpet from pee odors and poop odors. The product is called Anti Icky Poo (lol). It is organic and environmentally safe to remove odors. It is avaible at some pet stores or online.
If your cat urinates outside the box and has no health issues that are causing it then it has territorial issues. Make an area the “cat’s area” and don’t allow other pets to relax or hang out in “her special area”. She is marking a lot to mark it as hers, she feels she has no space of her own. Trust me, I’ve had cats for almost 50 years and I did not think the territory idea would work but it did. I saw it on Cat Whisperer show.
Keep in mind that carpet cleaners are noisy; some are so loud that we recommend wearing hearing protection. And don’t buy by brand name alone. In our tests, we found big differences from one model to another. For example, Bissell holds both the top and bottom spots in our ratings.
According to research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, urinary tract infections or UTIs are the most common bacterial infections worldwide, affecting up to 150 million people each year.
I’m interested in the intersection between design and technology—whether for drywall or robotic vacuums—and how the resulting combination affects consumers. I’ve written about consumer advocacy issues for publications like The Atlantic, PC Magazine, and Popular Science, and now I’m happy to be tackling the topic for CR. you said that you are treating your dog with Crananidin and Cosequin every other day. And that “Nutramax pharm. makes the products. Is this a mail order pharm. And did your vet come up with this solution on taking this or did you research on the internet.
Get into a regular cleaning routine. Cleaning can be a drag, but the best way to stop your home from smelling like your pets is to clean regularly and stay on top of messes. A good cleaning routine will include regular vacuuming, floor washing, laundry, and dusting. For the best results:
4. Cord is about 12” too short. Seriously. What size room do they do in the test rooms? Dyson seems to be the only one who thinks you need some cordage to use their product, I am guessing. I think that would be the number one complaint of everyone who owns this cleaner. I know it was the one that I read the most about. In order to do my family room, I have to stop and unplug it one time, so is it a big deal? Again, not to me because I usually have to dump the tank by that time, but would it be a big deal to you? I am not sure of the actual length of the cord, you should just know to expect a short cord. I am sure it has something to do with how you have to wrap the cord vs. how large of a hook they can put on there, or already burgeoning weight of the cleaner, not to add more cord, but again, I am no expert on these things.
For linens, blankets and cushion covers, add a ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar to any oxy-powered detergent powder, such as boric acid, and launder as usual. Also, leaving a deep glass dish of white vinegar standing in a room with an offensive odor usually takes the odor out of the air.
3) Install indoor/outdoor carpet. There are very nice indoor/outdoor carpets for very cheap. Less than a hundred dollars to do any room in your house and even if your animals are horrible, they don’t soak up smell like regular carpet.
If the extent of your pet odor problem is just a general pet smell (not urine), you’ve just encountered a best-case-scenario when it comes to pet odor removal. It’s not pleasant, and it’s still going to take some work to remove the odor from your home, but there are a number of pet odor removal solutions out there to take advantage of.
Also, not a “defect” but something you need to know if you’re like me and tend to lift up the handle to pick up the whole machine (like you would w/ a vacuum cleaner) to lift it over the power cord, when I lifted the handle on this carpet cleaner the water container lunged out from the machine! It seems that this is quick release mechanism! Good to know, at least the water tank didn’t have very much in it so nothing spilled, whew, that was exciting, and not in a good way!
Find previously soiled areas using a black light. If you have a persistent odor problem in a particular room, use a black light to illuminate all surfaces in the room. Urine will glow under black light, and once detected can be cleaned.
Quick question for you – do you have a recommendation for an odor removing recipe that can be used in a carpet shampoo vacuum? I do not want to buy a regular shampoo from the store as my vet told me it does not remove the urine smell and that animals will still be attracted and potty on the carpet as long as I use a regular shampoo.
Dehydration can cause an ammonia smell. Dehydration occurs when someone fails to drink enough fluids or has a significant fluid loss, due to vomiting or diarrhea. Ammonia odor happens when chemicals in urine are concentrated due to a lack of water.
Pee doesn’t usually have a strong smell. But some foods — especially asparagus, which has a smelly sulfur compound — can change the odor. So can vitamin B-6 supplements. When you’re dehydrated and your pee gets very concentrated, it can smell strongly of ammonia.
