I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT, whenever I leave him at home he pees in the house: on the carpet, on the bed, on flowers..

Pour Freshwater over the treated area. Apply pressure to the area by standing or walking on it. Consider steam-cleaning the carpet. If the enzymatic cleaner didn’t remove the stain completely, consider renting a steam cleaner or hiring a professional to do the job for you. Make sure to ask if they have a product to add into their solution designed for pet stains. Stains are a lot easier to remove when they’re fresh, so try to decide quickly if this is what you need to do.
I foster for a local rescue, so I get all kinds of dogs through my house. Some old, some young, but most of them poorly trained. Which sadly translates into lots of potty messes. Before we found SUN I tried every product on the market. I bought everything on the shelf at Petsmart and Petco, I ordered stuff online (I don’t want to add product names, I think it would be in bad taste), basically tried everything! I even watched videos for DIY odor removal and spent hours on my hands and knees with peroxide and dish soap and a scrub brush. Some of it helped, some of it didn’t. But most of it only masked the odor, it didn’t get rid of it.
White vinegar is a miraculous substance that will get rid of even the old accident stains that might have been missed if a dog did a “ninja-pee” behind the bookshelves or something. Baking soda is nature’s odor remover, and teamed up with vinegar, does a great job at getting rid of odors!

Search at night or in complete darkness. Pet urine can be difficult to see, especially when old, so maximize your search efforts by taking advantage of darkness. Either wait for night, or make the room as dark as possible.
Orange Typically a sign of dehydration, showing up earlier than thirst; “holding your bladder” for too long; post-exercise; consuming orange foods (carrots, squash, or food dyes); the drug Pyridium (phenazopyridine); liver or pituitary problem (ADH, or antidiuretic hormone) Drink more water and don’t delay urination; consult physician if orange urine persists despite adequate hydration
Take a brush to upholstered furniture like couches. Fill a bucket with warm water and several drops of liquid dish soap. Swirl the water to create suds. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the suds and brush the entire surface of the furniture. Wipe with a barely damp cloth and air dry.
You should now have a pretty good idea of how important it is to familiarize yourself with what’s normal for your pee. Urine is a window into the inner workings of your body and can function as an “early warning system” for detecting health problems.
I’ve been looking for how to remove dog urine smell from carpet and think I found the answer. My family grew up using Resolve and I remember it not working. However, when I got married my husband swore by it, so I gave it another chance. They must’ve changed their formula because it actually works! We’ve only had to use it a couple times, once when our dog went potty inside and another time when I spilled watermelon juice on our WHITE chair (shhhh don’t tell my husband). Thankfully both stains are gone and everything looks (and smells) great!
Put doggie door that leads to either back yard or garage. If into garage put doggie pads. If you have a patio in back yard also put doggie pads. If gets windy hold pads with small rocks on corners. If you live in apartment,t use doggie gates to a section. & place painters plastic on floor with doggie pads all over. It is alot of work & money on doggie pads but no pee on carpet especially if you live in apt & you have to work
If it isnt a lot of pee, then repeatedly rinsing and drying the area MAY work, as may using something that draws out liquid, such as bicarb of soda or even salt… (so you wash the stain, dab dry, pour on the powder/salt, leave to dry, vacuum off).
Use only 3% Hydrogen Peroxide. Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide that is higher in concentrate than 3% Bleaching may occur on some carpets with a stronger solution. Read the label on the Hydrogen Peroxide carefully. The label will state the strength.
anything with enzymes will work in a spray bottle also , i have same issue ! going to have to replace carpet and not sure what to put back down ! have you tried some pee pads ? just lay a couple down at night !
Find old stains. You might have a general idea of where old stains might be from the odor. If you think there might be old stains in an area, explore using a sweeping motion, gradually moving farther away from the generally smelly location. The pet urine that you’re looking for should show up as a yellow or greenish color. Try looking in the following areas:
First off, let me start by saying, I have 4 cats, a Labrador retriever and 2 male humans that also live inside the house with me. The main “mess” is the oldest female cat, who hates anything but herself, so she pees on the carpet. If you put a clean, new cat box where she pees, she will pee next to it or make a new spot elsewhere. She was born and spent the first 4 months of her life in a cage in the pound so she has “issues”, we will leave it at that. No one else soils the carpet only she does. Unless they are “sick”. ‘Nuff said? So we are talking a daily weedle or two in the same spot on the carpet. I have always used my Little Green Machine to clean this up, but after paying a pro company to come do the entire job for $150 each time and only having it done 2-3 times /year, I decided I should save the money and buy one of these things based on the reviews on here. I did not purchase this machine on Amazon.com, but rather from Costco.com at a better discount.

If you don’t have hydrogen peroxide on hand you can substitute it with a laundry spray stain remover. Check the bottle. If it says ‘Oxy’ anywhere on the label then it probably contains hydrogen peroxide. Preen, Sard, OxiClean etc.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to remove odor from hardwood floors? We have 3 shih-tzus and 2 of them are 8 years and do have accidents. One of them is very overweight and I’m starting to suspect possible diabetes. She is going to vet this week. The male will go when we leave sometimes. I believe he gets mad at us for leaving him!!! We also have a 5 year old male that WILL NOT go in the house unless he is sick. The big difference is my husband and I were both working when we got the 2 eight year olds as puppies. I was not working when we got the 5 yr old and he was potty trained in less than 2 weeks!!! Lesson learned!!!
First, the basics. What’s the best dog urine remover? You might be surprised to know that it’s plain old water! Below are some tips on the first steps to take to get dog urine out of carpet as soon as you find his “oops” spot(s).
There are definitely some tricks to making sure that you’ve handled pet stains and odors in the best way possible. There are also some homemade remedies which people recommend and some of them are super efficacious.
You probably don’t give too much thought to your pee and what it looks and smells like. But if you’ve noticed a sudden change in the smell of that urine, you may want to know what’s causing it. Sometimes, it could be due to a health problem that may need the attention of a doctor, so don’t put off investigating this further. What follows are some symptoms to watch out for and the most common causes of smelly urine. However, there may be times that medication or certain health conditions unique to you are bringing on the problem. And that’s why it is critical that you let your doctor know if you spot anything amiss.
Also, not a “defect” but something you need to know if you’re like me and tend to lift up the handle to pick up the whole machine (like you would w/ a vacuum cleaner) to lift it over the power cord, when I lifted the handle on this carpet cleaner the water container lunged out from the machine! It seems that this is quick release mechanism! Good to know, at least the water tank didn’t have very much in it so nothing spilled, whew, that was exciting, and not in a good way!
Most of those which aren’t direct use enzymatic products are made to be used with deep cleaning machines of various stripes. They work great for your carpet anyway, so why not make sure that you get something specifically designed to take care of the assorted feces, vomit, and urine stains that plague many pet owners?
Dehydration can cause an ammonia smell. Dehydration occurs when someone fails to drink enough fluids or has a significant fluid loss, due to vomiting or diarrhea. Ammonia odor happens when chemicals in urine are concentrated due to a lack of water.
It takes three days to put one carpet cleaner through our battery of cleaning-performance tests. Our engineers soil large swatches of off-white nylon carpet with red Georgia clay. We run a cleaner over the carpet for four wet and four dry cycles, simulating how you’d clean a particularly dirty spot on a well-trafficked carpet. Then we repeat the test on two more swatches.
Did Fido or Kitty leave you a present again? Maybe you found an old surprise when you went to rearrange the furniture? Regardless of when the deed was done, you can restore your carpet or floor to its former glory. All you need is some cleaning know-how and a little elbow grease. This wikiHow will show you how to remove new stains, old stains, and use home remedies to maintain your clean home.
It is important to pee when you feel the urge. Delaying urination can cause bladder overdistension — like overstretching a Slinky such that it can’t bounce back. You may habitually postpone urination if you find bathroom breaks inconvenient at work, or if you have Paruresis (also known as Shy Bladder Syndrome, Bashful Bladder, Tinkle Terror, or Pee Anxiety), the fear of urinating in the presence of others. Seven percent of the public suffers from this condition.10
I would like to thank you for this amazing remedy! I have two male dogs that were having a marking war in my living room and I like everyone else here had used countless products to get rid of the smell to no avail. The final straw was today when I cleaned my carpets and could smell nothing but the urine smell in that area. Then I looked up “natural home remedies for pet stains” and came up with your website. The solution of peroxide and dish detergent on top of the baking soda hasn’t even dried yet and my house smells WONDERFUL again. I will no longer be embarrassed to have people over to hang out!!
In every second house people have their favorite pet and all of them from time to time cause problems which smell. Usually pets have a tray or they wait patiently when they will go for a walk. It happens quite often that the pet does not want to wait and behaves inappropriately: for some reason pees exactly on our new favorite carpet which we bought just recently or even received as a present from our grandmother. Anyone who was trying to get rid of pee smell and succeeded is getting pissed every time it is happening again. We will investigate best and simplest ways which remove urine properly.
The first solution most people try is a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Mix a cup of white vinegar, two tablespoons of baking soda, and a cup of warm water then apply it to the stain while the whole mixture is still bubbling.
Absorb the mess. Use wet towels or paper towels, layered and topped by some kind of weight, to quickly absorb fresh puddles. Run the towels under cool water, then wring them out so they’re damp but not dripping. Place them over the stain completely and put something heavy on top, like cans of food, a pair of shoes, or a book. The moisture helps soak up the urine, while the weight presses the towels down into the carpet. Leave it on for at least 10 minutes.
Bleach is another very common tool which is used to remove the traces of the dog toilet. Before implementing bleach on any surface make a test and make sure that the textile is capable to survive after this chemical ingredient. Especially it is important to test the surface in case you have very expensive carpet. Basically you need to try the mixture on the very small surface which is not that visible before implementing this method.
Pictured above is the brilliant gadget that will detect dried urine and those stains you just cannot see! It is an LED/UV Cat-Dog-Pet Urine Stain Blacklight Flashlight and is available at a big discount from Amazon.
This is what I do. I don’t bother buying store cleaners anymore, as with some “accident’s, you can go through a whole bottle! The solution I mentioned above works just as good or better. Then once a year I get the professional carpet cleaner to come. It’s amazing the stains he can get rid of that I can’t!
5. Super easy to clean for storage after use . The machine comes apart very easy and it is also easy to remove the beater bar/brush on the floor/front and rinse it out to remove all of that cat/dog hair from my many pets. I have A LOT of hair each time I use it. Simply run it under the faucet and everything rinses out. It also tells you in the instructions to use it with hot water cycle through at the end before you store it for a long period of time. I do this with my Little Green Machine, too, but not quite what they are telling you to do, so don’t do what I do because it isn’t what they are telling you to do. I set a bowl in the sink, turn the faucet on to hot tap water, run the water in the bowl, then stick the nozzle into the bowl and let it suck up clean water until the tank fills-empty, repeat, empty repeat, until the dirty water tank is running clear. That gets the soap and residue out of the lines along the way on both my Little Green as well as this machine, using the hand held hose attachment. You can remove the beater bar VERY EASILY and run it under the faucet to clear it from the soap, hair, etc. It only weighs 2 pounds, tops. Super easy to clean.
I am often contacted by readers of my articles. This is the story of one reader, Sophia. She told me about her experience with carpets that smelled of dog urine in a house that her family has recently moved into.
An independent laboratory recently conducted multiple tests of our P.U.R.T. process to determine its effectiveness in treating pet urine odors and stains. In tests against the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine, this study found that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.9% of pet urine odors from carpets. To go one step further, the study also tested Chem-Dry’s ability to eliminate the bacteria that can be found in pet urine. When used along with our HCE (Hot Carbonating Extraction) cleaning process and a sanitizer, the study found that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.2% of the bacteria from pet urine stains in carpets.
Joe Truini: My friend Blackie here is a sweetie pie, but she tends to leave black fur all over the rug. In this case I even vacuumed the rug, but you still can’t get up all the fur, because it gets stuck down in the fibers.

Sounds like your kitty may need a new cat food. I have a lot of experience with cats, and most of the hairballs and vomiting stopped for us when we switched to a more natural food. We feed Diamond indoor formula, but any cat food whose main ingredients are meat rather than corn and wheat is likely to win you a reprieve from the constant vomiting. Just make sure you swap foods over the course of time rather than abruptly, to save on stomach upset. Yes, it’s more expensive, but the cat’s lack of vomiting (and the food’s lack of staining, if the cat does vomit) are worth a little extra. 🙂
CR’s take: Unlike most other carpet cleaners, the SmartWash Automatic is motion-activated—you push it forward and backward and the carpet cleaner detects what motion you’re making, and reacts accordingly, dispensing cleaning solution when moving forward, and sucking it up when moving backward. There are three tanks, one for detergent, one for clean water, and one for dirty water, which means you don’t have to mix up solution each time you refill the tank. Because of these features it earns a Very Good score for convenience.
I did get the (yuk, numerous!) clumps of pet hair on the old rug I cleaned, which for years had been vacuumed with a Dirt Devil “Vision” (Hepa filter type bagless) vacuum that I did not realize how crummy it was in light of the newer vacuums now available.
I have found hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishsoap to work so well that the cats don’t go back to the same place twice, or sniff at places they’ve peed after treatment: a cat’s nose is the gold standard for judging whether cat pee smell is gone or not. Getting it to smell clean to a human nose is only half the battle if you don’t want repeat toilet visits to your carpet or furniture.
Menopause can also increase a woman’s risk for UTIs and ammonia-smelling odor, resulting from drops in the female hormone estrogen and loss of vaginal flora, which are the normal and healthy bacteria living in the vagina. Both these changes may cause ammonia-smelling urine.

Normal urine is clear and has a straw-yellow color. While the odor of urine can vary somewhat, in most cases, it does not have a strong smell. With dehydration, the urine is more concentrated and may have a stronger ammonia scent than normal. Consumption of certain foods, such as asparagus (which can impart a characteristic odor to urine), and taking some medications may be causes for changes in the odor of urine. The presence of bacteria in the urine, such as with a urinary tract infection (UTI), can affect the appearance and smell of urine. When there is an infection in the urinary tract, the urine may take on a foul-smelling odor as well as appear cloudy or bloody. A burning sensation during urination may be a symptom of a UTI. The urine may also have an abnormally sweet odor in uncontrolled diabetes, and some rare genetic conditions can also cause the urine to have an abnormal or strange odor.
Carpet cleaning machines are very powerful machines, but they can also take a beating. If you’re dealing specifically with pet problems on a frequent basis it’s better to buy a specialized machine than it is to keep spending a whole bunch of time cleaning your device.
Clean or dispose of the towels. Because the towels you used for absorbing the urine will have faint traces of your pet’s scent, it’s important to keep your pet from marking them again. Help your pet avoid the temptation by discarding the towel.
Amber More concentrated than orange so severe dehydration related to intense exercise or heat; excess caffeine or salt; hematuria; decreased urine production (oliguria or anuria); metabolic problem; pituitary problem (ADH, or antidiuretic hormone) Consult your physician if problem persists despite adequate hydration
