Hi Debbie, oh that is awful! I had a cat who would VOMIT on me while I was sleeping, so I can kind of feel your pain. First off, the blanket – you may want to trash it if you can’t get the smell out. They’ll keep peeing on it if they smell the pee. I’m not a vet, so of course I’m obliged to tell you that you should talk to your vet, but in my experience cats will urinate in the places they’ve gone before because they associate that as a peeing-spot.
Did you try to go back to the old school cat litter. If they didn’t have a problem before with it than that might be an option. Having a litter box in another room may also be an option. Some cats like to have their own litter box. Good luck.
When deciding which air purifier will be most effective against household gases, odors and fumes, first consider the amount of air each air purifier can effectively process. The CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, is used to measure the overall effectiveness of an air purifier and is tested and certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).
Add a bit of bleach into the water (ratio of 1:10) and stir it. Apply the resulting mixture on the spot where your dog left some pee. In 20 minutes wash the whole surface or even the whole carpet with the water.
Use a commercial air freshener. Commercial air fresheners are specifically designed to make the air in your house smell clean and wonderful. These devices often contain chemicals that mask bad odors, plus fragrances that make the air smell nice. Air fresheners come in a variety of forms, including:[18]
I am very surprised at all the good reviews on Odorzout products. Not sure why it seems to work for some and not others. I have the laundry one as well as this all purpose one and I have had NO LUCK at all with using this. My husbands work clothes were the main test for the laundry version of this and it FAILED miserably, over and over. It failed even on minor odors so this is all a waste of money to me. I have recently read reviews of what a nightmare it is to vacuum up from carpet and floors if you don’t have a strong shop vac and I can see where that would be the case. If you are desperate it may be worth trying since it seems to work for some.
PureAyre works. It is the most effective pet odor eliminator you can buy. Yet PureAyre is also safe, comprised of food-grade enzymes in purified water. PureAyre does not contain bacteria, alcohol or citrus. You can spray it directly onto your pets and onto their bedding. You can use it around the elderly, young children, and people with respiratory problems.
Pets are great, but they don’t always smell that way. Even the cutest cats and dogs can make your rugs and furniture stinky if you’re not vigilant. Worse, even the best pets can have accidents on the rug.
I loved this product. I was constantly being around people who smoke and hated that the smell lingered on me wherever I went. This got the job done to eliminate the cigarette smell. And also just smells so good. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
Do not use Hydrogen Peroxide that is higher in concentrate than 3%. Bleaching may occur on some carpets with a stronger solution. Read the label on the Hydrogen Peroxide carefully. The label will state the strength.
If you notice a wet spot that may have happened earlier in the day, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit overnight, said Annie B. Bond, green living expert and author of Clean and Green. After the patch dries overnight, spray it with distilled white vinegar and don’t be concerned if the carpet bubbles a bit while the compounds interact to clean.
To clean the compounds that are not water-soluble, use enzyme cleaners which are the most powerful substance in term of cleaning cat urine. They are meant to destroy the uric acid into ammonia and carbon dioxide. You will notice that it will off gas afterward.
After applying vinegar to the pee spots and sucking it up with a wet vac…the spots where vinegar was applied shine bright yellow under black light. Does that mean the vinegar created a worse problem? Or that the pee is still there? Any ideas?

Mix a solution of fifty percent white vinegar and fifty percent water. Use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar solution to the carpet. Work the solution into the carpet with a soft brush (or your fingers) to ensure it penetrates the carpet fibers below.
When cleaning any surface, it’s important to get to the point not only where you cannot smell the urine, but your cat can’t smell it either. “When a cat can smell a previous urine spot (from themselves or another cat), that area is likely to be used again,” George said.
Re-wet the spot with water. After you’ve lifted the towel, pour a small amount of cold water over the spot again. Start pouring just outside the perimeter of the stain, slowly moving toward the center. This will prevent the water from spreading the urine out into an even wider circle. Allow the water to work through the stain for about a minute.
After cleaning the pee and other items out of carpet, grab baking soda and some natural essential oils. I found a box of oils on amazon. Add tea tree oil and lavender to the baking soda. In fact, add whatever smell you like for the olfactory. Add lots of drops to the baking soda and mix well. Shake this mixture all over the carpet. It needs to look like it just snowed. Get a brush, preferably with a long handle to protect your back, and agitate the baking soda into your carpet. Leave it on over night for best results and then vacuum. If you can’t wait that long, at least let it sit two hours. Baking soda and the oils are all natural so safe for humans and animals. This step has helped in creating a more earthy and pleasant smell in my home when I do the manic bi-monthly cleaning.
While some cats squat and urinate on bare floors, carpet, furniture and other horizontal surfaces, others will spray urine on vertical surfaces around the home. “Unfixed males spray to mark their territory, and unfixed females spray to let tomcats know they are ready [to mate]” DeFeo said. To avoid such behaviors, she suggests getting male cats neutered and female cats spayed at six months.
Another possible reason that an older cat may forego the litter box is arthritis. “As cats age, they can get arthritis, which makes it harder for them to get into the box,” Kornreich said. “Perhaps the sides are too tall or the box is located in a place that requires the cat to do some kind of arduous physical activity to get to, such as up or down a flight of stairs.”
Jennifer, thank you so much for the encouragement!! I’m sorry about your cat : ( I had a cat pass away a couple years ago and I STILL have dreams about her, I miss that silly girl. I currently have a calico named Meredith and she’s a little hellion but she’s precious. Good luck on your kitten search!
P.S. If you can, replace the litter boxes too and in the future use litter liners or just big, cheap trash bags to line the boxes so that the ammonia doesn’t soak into the plastic. I’ve found this helpful to control odors in my own home.
