Cats love to rub their smell on the corners of couches, chairs, tables, walls, doors, fridges, bench bases, or anything else they can potentially mark with their scent glands (ever see your cat rubbing their face on your legs?). Try wiping furniture with vinegar and washing all curtains, too.
Use oxidation if necessary. One alternative to using a steam cleaner on an old stain is oxidizing it. Products that release oxygen are effective odor removers, and you can make a solution yourself at home.
Epsom salt is a widely available home remedy for many ailments, including constipation. A person can use Epsom salt as a laxative by mixing it with the right amount of water. In this article, learn how to use Epsom salt for constipation safely. We also cover the possible risks and when to see a doctor.
Men usually don’t have symptoms, but women often do (e.g., yellow-green vaginal discharge), including that fishy odor which may seem like it’s coming from the urine, when in fact it comes from the vagina.
We have old (like several months old) spots where our puppies have gone pee on the carpet. We have used a steam cleaner. The stains are gone, but the smell is still there in some spots. Any advice on how to get rid of the smell?

Come to Petco for the best carpet cleaner for pet stains that help handle your canine’s day-to-day messes and keep your home fresh. Sharing your home with your pet means dealing with the occasional stain or odor that needs removing. Accidents naturally occur when training and caring for your pet, and can happen in any room of your house. For rooms with heavy matting, a pet carpet cleaner is your best line of defense for removing unsightly stains.
Add in 4 heaping tablespoons of baking soda, adding it in smaller amounts if it threatens to fizz over (and it really does fizz!) Pour into a spray bottle and thoroughly spray the area. Let sit for 5 minutes, then gently rub and blot up with a soft cloth. You can also simply pour some straight from the bowl over the stain if you don’t have a spray bottle.
If you face the problem on the everyday basis (usually it is happening when you have a puppy and you are just trying to teach the puppy to pee where he should) you can prepare a small bottle of the mixture.
Important: Before implementing hydrogen peroxide on your carpet try it on the small part of the carpet and make sure that carpet does not change the color. If the test is accomplished and carpet is looking good go ahead and wash the whole spot with the cleaning mixture.
If you used paper towels in your poultices, be sure to seal them in a garbage bag and get rid of them as soon as possible, so that your pet doesn’t try urinating on them, or digging them out of the garbage.
Steam-clean old stains. A rented cleaner can produce steam that’s hot enough to sanitize the carpet, after which the water can be vacuumed up again. Alternatively, if the spot is particularly large or stained, you can hire a professional cleaner to manage it.
Ok I have a 7 year old female dog and she never urinated in the house but now is doing it and pooping too!! My dinning room area smells the urine, that’s her favorite spot. Will this ursine truly help get rid of smell and bigger question will it stop her from going back to those spots to pee?
What I finally did was to purchase this baking soda based + fragrance carpet deodorizer (Arm & Hammer brand with oxy-clean which pulls up 25% more dirt), sprinkled all over, brush the carpet with a broom to spread out the powder, then vacuum in 30 mins. I am quite pleased as I no longer smell urine in the house.
It happens to even the best dogs. Accidents. Urine stains. Both unsightly and with that rank smell every dog owner comes to loathe. Sometimes you might even get a little bit of brown in there, and your formerly pristine carpet is now looking like a war zone and smelling like a barn.
I would like to thank you for this amazing remedy! I have two male dogs that were having a marking war in my living room and I like everyone else here had used countless products to get rid of the smell to no avail. The final straw was today when I cleaned my carpets and could smell nothing but the urine smell in that area. Then I looked up “natural home remedies for pet stains” and came up with your website. The solution of peroxide and dish detergent on top of the baking soda hasn’t even dried yet and my house smells WONDERFUL again. I will no longer be embarrassed to have people over to hang out!!
I had this same problem with my elderly miniature poodle. The only thing that has worked is a mild sedative, Acepromazine, at bedtime and putting a diaper on her. I might have to keep a diaper on her 24/7 because even though I watch her almost continually she still urinates in the house occasionally. The night time solution came after consultation with her vet. I never tried putting her in a crate, beside the bed at night, this might work. Since your dog is young as compared to my 15 year old dog, I would try the crate thing first. Good luck!
Certain foods — most notably asparagus. Asparagus is notorious for causing a foul, eggy or “cabbagy” stench that results from a sulfur compound called methyl mercaptan (also found in garlic and skunk secretions). Only 50 percent of people can smell asparagus pee because they have the required gene. Cutting off the tips of asparagus will reportedly prevent the pungent-smelling pee…but of course, this is the tastiest part!
I foster dogs in addition to owning two of my own, so I have a lot of pups going through my house. Since they’re rescues and often times come from places where they haven’t even started on potty training, I have a lot of accidents in my house. And I do mean a lot. Pretty much everything you could imagine that could come out of either end of dog has probably ended up on my carpet at some point or another. Come spring time my backyard also turns into a mud pit, and I have dogs tearing in from the backyard tracking who knows what all over the place. In short, stain removers are a must at my house, and not only do they have to get the stain, but the smell as well. Unfortunately, it took me awhile to catch on to the fact that I could make my own and that they would work just as well as the dozen or so other expensive cleaners I’d tried before. Mud, blood, number 1 or number 2, here are 3 natural DIY solutions to keeping up on pet stains and odors.
Sometimes dog urine accidents have already dried because you did not notice them previously. You can find dried urine spots on your carpet with the aid of a black light. The dog urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room. Hand held black lights are quite inexpensive usually costing between $15 – $25.
Certain foods or supplements too may cause urine to smell. For instance, asparagus is a known offender that doesn’t just cause urine to take on a greenish tinge, but also causes pee to smell bad. Other strong smelling foods like garlic or beer and even coffee too may have this effect.16 Besides such foods, Vitamin B6 supplements too can cause urine to smell funny as the body expels any excess via the urine.17
2. This machine, if you move it slow enough like the instructions TELL YOU TO will suck almost all of the water back out. I have been able to turn on the ceiling fan, shampoo an entire extra large area and move furniture back to bone dry carpet within 4 hours each time I have used it. Pro companies I have had to leave furniture off the area or up on the foam blocks for days each time. You must move the machine slowly though and make 2-3 passes over the area. You can see the dirty water/foam still coming back up in the machine, so you will know when you have gotten most of it out. I make 3 slow passes, fwd/backward, fwd/backward, fwd/backward and the carpet is nearly dry to the touch-only slightly moist. Not wet. Not damp. You can walk on it with sox and tell it is dry after 3-4 hours.
Another cause for musty smelling urine is phenylketonuria or PKU. This is a genetic condition that causes the buildup of phenylalanine, an amino acid that cannot be processed, in the blood and even your brain. As this buildup continues unchecked, it could cause brain damage and must, therefore, be treated as soon as possible. Behavioral problems like tantrums, having fairer eyes, hair, and skin than siblings who don’t have the problem, vomiting, eczema, epilepsy, tremors and musty smelling breath are other signs of this ailment.13
Smelly urine have you in search of its cause? Abnormal smell and/or color of your urine can be caused by an array of factors. Urine excreted by an otherwise hydrated healthy person does not usually have a strong smelly odor and its appearance is straw-like in color.
The Bissell Big Green is probably the most effective carpet cleaner we have reviewed. It has a large following amongst pet owners because of its extremely efficient cleaning of pet urine, pet vomit and pet stains.
I have a cat who peed on his bed, and secretly in both carriers – everything comes apart so I have been running them through the washing machine but with no success smell-wise. Is there a way to turn one of these mixes into a soak or add to the laundry machine?
Cat litter, dog litter, wild bird food, live & frozen food and oversized items may incur an additional per-item shipping & handling fee or surcharge. Additional fees may apply and will be noted on the Product Detail page and/or Shopping Cart.
Chem-Dry has technicians who are specially trained to help remove pet urine from carpets and will use UV glasses and black lights to scan your carpet for long-dried stains. Once the technicians identify where the stains are, they’ll use machines to treat it with a non-toxic solution the company has been using for 15 years. The solution “comes in contact with the urine molecules and breaks them apart. Left untreated, urine takes up to five years to off-gas on it’s own. The oxidizers do this work within hours, not years,” Hatch said. The technicians leave the solution on the carpet to work for 24 hours, after which time the urine, bacteria and any odor will be gone.
In your lifetime, your kidneys filter more than one million gallons of water, enough to fill a small lake. Amazingly, one kidney can handle the task perfectly well. In fact, if you lose a kidney, your remaining kidney can increase in size by 50 percent within two months, to take over the job of both.3
The first step is to grab a length of around six sheets of kitchen roll, fold this into a six sheet thick square and press it down onto the wet area of the carpet with your foot. Repeat with fresh kitchen roll until the area is as dry as you can get it.
My daughter brought home a puppy for her birthday (a friend on her school bus surprised *her*), and we are *trying* to train him to go outside, but, more often than not, catch him going on throw rugs, or the laminate right after he’s been out. I use a diy mix to clean his messes, that has evolved since he got here, of vinegar, water, a little dish soap, now with added (just a little) bleach and Lysol.
Well I had the perfect opportunity to see what’s really what is going on as I have a new”ish” rug in one room(only about 5 months old) and another that is quite old and even matted down in areas that are extremely high traffic. Annnd did I mention that we have a plethora of pets (angora cat aka fur factory, Yorkie, MaltiPoo, Standard Poodle, Golden Doodle, Golden Retreiver and Labradoodle, and no, I am not an “animal Hoarder”, just live on a mini farm and have 7 kids who each have a pet!) and their accompanying fur/hairs embedded over time in the old rug, while the newer rug, not so much …..

Clean furniture. Pet smells love to hide in furniture. Your cat’s special chair may be host to all sorts of irksome smells. The type of furniture will dictate the best cleaning method, but you should always check the care labels before cleaning to make sure the piece isn’t dry clean only. Care labels marked with an S mean don’t clean with water, and X means dry clean only.

Your urine contains waste products that need to be expelled from the body along with water. When you drink less water, the waste matter becomes more concentrated and can cause urine to smell stronger than usual. This darker, more concentrated urine can appear early in the morning when you haven’t drunk much water over the night or when you’ve not had enough water and the body is dehydrated.7
Fold a bath towel two times and cover the urine spot. Stand on towel and dab the urine into the towel by walking In place. When urine is seen on the towel under your shoes pick up the towel and cover the urine with an unsoiled section of the folded towel. Repeat as necessary to get the liquid up. As urine comes up from the carpet use unfolded towels or only fold once.
Products that use more traditional methods of cleaning with solvents (to dissolve stains) and surfactants (surface active agents that “wet” the carpet) may not be as effective and can actually deactivate enzymatic cleaners. Keep an eye on the ingredient panel for chlorine, ammonia and sodium lauryl sulfate, as these can be harmful to pets (and people, too). If the product’s instructions direct you to keep pets and children away from the product after it has been applied, you might want to think twice about using it in your home.
Thank you so much for the pet stain and odor remover. I have 3 dogs, 2 are seniors and are prone to accidents now. I have a questions for you. Do you know of anything that helps toe nail fungal infections. I has caused my nails to thicken and are very uncomfortable.
I collect all my laundry water in a big plastic tub in the back yard, and it had come to stink also. I sprayed the tub with Skout’s Honor and the filthy smell was instantly gone. 2 months later, the laundry tub has developed that smell again, and I know how to get rid of it now.
In the absence of other symptoms, such as pain with urination, cloudy or dark urine color, or unusual frequency of urination, there is usually little reason for concern. But reccurring ammonia odor in pregnancy should still be brought to a doctor’s attention.
I have come across a flash light like device that emits a “black light ” that when shined onto an area that has urine stains the light will illuminate with a bright light color making it possible to detect urine srains. This light is available on Amazon for about $7:00. Using in a darkened room will help spotting the stains easier.
How do you apply the enzyme treatment in conjunction with the water/vinegar or peroxide, or do you not? Do you dilute the mixture after three months before applying the enzymes? How do you best recommend applying the enzyme mixture? What about essential oils? Would you recommend applying essential oils to the water vinegar or peroxide mix?
I purchased a house and the previous owner had five indoor dogs and numerous others outside. I liked the carpet, it was plush and probably expensive for the previous owners to put in, but the odor was almost unbearable and their was a few really dirty high traffic areas. I tried everything on the internet, baking soda, vinegar, every shampoo out there and nothing work. I was going to get all new carpet and decided to try one more thing. I put granulated pool chlorine in the shampooer with a little carpet soap. Worked like magic. Not only did it COMPLETELY eliminate the pet odor, it also cleaned the carpet to like new. The Pool Chlorine is really strong so you have to open all your windows or it will make your eyes sting. It does not discolor your carpet at all. The stronger the solution the better. It also makes the carpet dry faster. The smell is horrible for about an hour or two but its well worth it. I have my own shampooer but I probably could have gotten it done faster with a rented one. If you are considering getting new carpet because of pet odor try GRANULATED POOL CHLORINE first.
I am often contacted by readers of my articles. This is the story of one reader, Sophia. She told me about her experience with carpets that smelled of dog urine in a house that her family has recently moved into.

On carpet, cover the area with paper towels or an absorbent cloth and use your hands or feet to gently press. This will help draw out and soak up as much liquid as possible. You may need to use several paper towels, and repeal the process until the area is almost completely dry.
The more powerful the motor you’re working with, the cleaner you’re going to be able to make sure you get things. A lower powered motor makes sense if you’re dealing with office carpet and the occasional coffee spill or just the dust that inevitably gets tracked in from outdoors.
Bladder stones may occur as a result of concentrated urine forming crystals and usually occur only in men. The urine is also very dark and may sometimes be accompanied by some blood.3 Kidney stones can result in a constant need to pee, ability to only urinate a little at a time, pain while urinating, and possibly even blood in the urine.4
