As for rented apartments.. mmm keep cleaning.. or ask your landlord if you can replace the carpet with something else. Its in their interests to say yes really because if it smells of pee when you move out, though they will take your deposit, they still have to get a replacement put in..
There are two behaviors stimulated by pet odors remaining in the carpet dogs/cats both perform territorial “marking” with urine and, being creatures of habit, they tend to revisit spots they’ve used before. They can detect the very slightest aroma remaining in the carpet, which prompts them to “re-pee” in that spot. Your pet’s extraordinary sense of smell, combined with behavioral programming, can make managing pet stains a big problem. Enzymatic cleaners are organic compounds containing microscopic enzymes that destroy bacteria that cause pet stain odors. Thorough destruction of the bacteria is the only way to eliminate odors so that your pets can’t smell where they’ve (literally) pee’d before. If pet stains are a persistent problem, you’ll need to use a professional carpet cleaning machine that can apply the enzyme cleaner to the carpet and then suction it out sufficiently to prevent moisture accumulations beneath the carpet. Follow the product directions carefully.
Dealing with a dog who pees in the house is a pain, but there are steps you can take, especially if your otherwise perfect pooch likes to piddle on the carpet. Dog urine has an unpleasant smell and over time the odor becomes more difficult to remove. To prevent your dog from urinating on carpets while you train it to urinate outdoors, you may use certain commercial repellents or home remedies. Dogs have very sensitive noses, so often a strong smelling repellent sprayed on their usual pee spot will be enough to dissuade your dog from peeing. It’s important to clean the areas well before you apply any solutions, especially if the dog has urinated on the carpets as dogs tend to return to places that have a urine odor. Also, be sure to spot test any of these repellents before spraying large areas to be sure no discoloration of your carpet occurs.

It takes three days to put one carpet cleaner through our battery of cleaning-performance tests. Our engineers soil large swatches of off-white nylon carpet with red Georgia clay. We run a cleaner over the carpet for four wet and four dry cycles, simulating how you’d clean a particularly dirty spot on a well-trafficked carpet. Then we repeat the test on two more swatches.
Get into a regular cleaning routine. Cleaning can be a drag, but the best way to stop your home from smelling like your pets is to clean regularly and stay on top of messes. A good cleaning routine will include regular vacuuming, floor washing, laundry, and dusting. For the best results:
Hydrogen peroxide is another great substance when it comes to breaking down the “crystals” of urine and pulling out stains. Combine it with naturally deodorizing baking soda, and you have another great solution for cleaning up stains.
It’s a good idea to wait until the cleaner is on sale – we have a Vax cleaner which dries the carpet as well – you can use detergent, then a rinse and then do ‘dry’ passes until you are happy that as much water as possible has been removed. We have had this machine for some years and have found it very good.
If some stubborn soda still remains after you vacuum once, spay a light mist of vinegar and water over it to re-wet the baking soda, and place a dry rag over the area for another hour or two until it dries again. Then vacuum a second time.
Sometimes dog urine accidents have already dried because you did not notice them previously. You can find dried urine spots on your carpet with the aid of a black light. The dog urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room. Hand held black lights are quite inexpensive usually costing between $15 – $25.
To remove pet urine from carpet, start by absorbing as much of the urine as possible using damp towels and something heavy, like cans of food or a book, to weigh them down. Once the towels have soaked up most of the urine, re-wet the spot with water and spay it with an enzyme cleaner. Then, cover the spot with another damp towel and weigh it down again to soak up the cleaner. Allow it to sit overnight, then discard or thoroughly wash the towels so your pet can’t smell any remaining urine.
When you take her outside to pee, try to train her to pee on command. When she does pee outside, lots of praise, lots of treats, lots of love, make the act of peeing outside the most magical thing ever.
I do hope you have success in resolving your problem – I am in the UK and we have the NCCA here (National Carpet Cleaners’ Association) – but if you are in the USA, you could try contacting the trade association for professional carpet cleaners in your area to see if you were given bad advice by the carpet cleaner who steam cleaned your floor. He was evidently aware of the dog urine problem as soon as he arrived to clean your carpet. If this is the case and he belongs to a professional body, you may have some comeback about this.
If the carpet odors are longstanding and accompany urine stains that you can’t remove, hire a professional carpet cleaner. These experts have a wide range of machines and solvents at their disposal to clean your carpet, remove odors and make it look good as new.
We love our four-legged friends dearly…but not so much the stains and messes they leave behind. We can’t blame them really-they don’t come into the world knowing they have to go outdoors or in the litter box every time they have to go potty! There’s no way to avoid the mess, no matter how well trained your friend is, but by making your own cleaners you can avoid lasting stains and extra money spent on store-bought stain removers.
2. This machine, if you move it slow enough like the instructions TELL YOU TO will suck almost all of the water back out. I have been able to turn on the ceiling fan, shampoo an entire extra large area and move furniture back to bone dry carpet within 4 hours each time I have used it. Pro companies I have had to leave furniture off the area or up on the foam blocks for days each time. You must move the machine slowly though and make 2-3 passes over the area. You can see the dirty water/foam still coming back up in the machine, so you will know when you have gotten most of it out. I make 3 slow passes, fwd/backward, fwd/backward, fwd/backward and the carpet is nearly dry to the touch-only slightly moist. Not wet. Not damp. You can walk on it with sox and tell it is dry after 3-4 hours.
Fold a bath towel two times and cover the urine spot. Stand on towel and dab the urine into the towel by walking In place. When urine is seen on the towel under your shoes pick up the towel and cover the urine with an unsoiled section of the folded towel. Repeat as necessary to get the liquid up. As urine comes up from the carpet use unfolded towels or only fold once.
I have two toddlers. Enough said! lol. I used to grab a wet rag to clean stuff up- which doesn’t work well on carpet or our chairs! One of our chairs (PICTURED) was actually SO BAD that it was crusty and about 15 shades darker than its original color (from spilled juice, snacks, etc.)!! After cleaning it with the Bissel Pro-heat (Pet), which took about 10 minutes, it was back to its original color and looks brand new! It also took out some stains on our carpet that we thought would never come out! Needless to say, we don’t regret buying this, especially at a great price! Very easy to use and set up. We have recommended it to our in-laws and they love it as well.
Does it have a good look? Sure. But that’s about it. I bought this from Walmart not much over a year ago. Worked good for the first few months…not great, had time to time issues with the system drawing the liquids from the chambers. Got worse and worse over time. Not long after a years worth of use, which just so happens to be just beyond the warranty, it’s not drawing liquids from either chamber, the main suction area doesn’t work any longer…and the attachment suction barely works. On top of that…it comes with one of those power cords that tangles extremely easy upon itself. And where the power cord comes out of the machine is terrible placement. You have to fight wrapping and unwrapping the extension suction around the power cord for each use. Still not done. Small carpet fibers easily get pulled into the suction areas of the machine, to places where it’s impossible to remove the carpet fibers without breaking it open. Poor design…poor machine. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MODEL!!!

I hope that you have found this article useful and now know how to remove the odor of dog urine from your carpets and eliminate the evidence of those little accidents that are bound to happen from time to time! I use only ingredients from my store cupboard and have never found it necessary to use hydrogen peroxide.
Our cat throws up….a LOT. we’re in a rental and moving at the end of August. I was thinking we’d lose our deposit because of these stains, but now I’m thinking maybe not!! Claire, thank you! I’m trying this right now!
If you notice changes in the way your urine looks or smells, the cause might be something as benign as what you had for dinner last night, such as beets or asparagus. Or, your astuteness may potentially alert you to a serious condition.
For linens, blankets and cushion covers, add a ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar to any oxy-powered detergent powder, such as boric acid, and launder as usual. Also, leaving a deep glass dish of white vinegar standing in a room with an offensive odor usually takes the odor out of the air.
My dog took a long time to potty train – almost 9 months! I took her to training school, but you could consider bringing a dog trainer into your home to provide individualized attention and training. Also, if you’re not dealing well with chemical carpet cleaners, you could consider a natural-based product. But it’s always recommended to test a carpet cleaning product on an area that’s not visible to make sure it works with your carpet and doesn’t discolor or damage it. Good luck!
If you suspect you have a urinary tract problem, you should consult your physician. One of the first things he or she is likely to do is a urine test. Urine tests have been around for more than 6,000 years1 and are easy, noninvasive tools for quickly assessing your health status2.
