Hi, I recently moved house with my friend, and her cat has pee’d all over my bed, luckily it didn’t absorb into my mattress, just soaked up in my duvet, he also pee’d in a box I hadn’t unpacked yet. I have a kitten as well but she is using her litter tray and is kept in a separate room from him, so it for sure wasn’t her. How many times would I need to wash my duvet and what with? Getting really irritated with her cat now.
Now fast forward a bit-my stepdaughter and husband and their menagerie moved in…..sigh. The week after last Christmas. So, now here it is almost April and I have noticed a lot of cat pee smell downstairs on the brand new carpet. I had the carpet cleaned and after the floor dried, I could still smell it. I got down on my hands and knees and the carpet smells great again. So, I checked the baseboard is sticky and reeks of cat urine. How do I get that smell out and not hurt the carpet? More enzymatic cleaner or do you have any other ideas?
is there an alternative? I’m babysitting and the little girl peed on a brown couch and I’ve mixed the soap and water but I can still smell the pee.. there isn’t any baking soda, vinegar, or peroxide here at the house.
A: The most common source of a rotten egg smell in residential structures is a natural gas leak. Though natural gas itself is composed primarily of methane, which has no odor, gas companies use an additive known as mercaptan to provide an early warning for homeowners
Areas of cat urine that have dried and previously gone undetected can be found with the aid of a black light. The cat urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room. Hand held black lights are quite inexpensive, usually costing between $15 – $25. To save the expense of a black light you can always use your nose to detect the source of the odor. Put your nose down close to the carpet and sniff away.
Be prepared for accidents when you bring home a new cat. You’ll need to train your cat to use the litter box properly, clean up after her if she doesn’t, and get medical treatment for her if an illness is causing inappropriate urination.
Hi Mary. Question: I have black oriental rugs which have been doused with cat urine. Will the peroxide fade them? As expensive as they I am afraid to try without an opinion. Thank you. Lynn in FL [email protected]
If the carpet is in a room you plan to utilize until the installation date, you can easily remove only the damaged area by cutting through the carpet and pad with a utility knife. To be on the safe side, extend the perimeter by at least a foot.
Thank you so much for the pet stain and odor remover. I have 3 dogs, 2 are seniors and are prone to accidents now. I have a questions for you. Do you know of anything that helps toe nail fungal infections. I has caused my nails to thicken and are very uncomfortable.
UV light illuminates any substance containing phosphors (including dog pee), making it easy for you to locate and treat set-in urine stains. Just turn off the overhead lights, turn on your UV flashslight, and get searching.

When your cat takes to urinating outside the litter box, the smell can be difficult to get rid of and nearly impossible to mask. Whether the cat pees on a carpet, a piece of furniture, bed linens, or your clothes, it’s important to neutralize the odor both to avoid embarrassment and to prevent the cat from becoming a repeat offender, as they’ll often return to a spot where they have previously urinated if the odor is not eliminated.  Consider this your ultimate guide to eliminating cat urine smells from your home and determining why your cat may be urinating outside of his or her litter box.
I use this machine with an accompanying solution (you can pick which Bissell formula works best for your problem area) to remove pet stains (including the more than occasional hairball) from our carpet.
Jothan Hatch, the national training director for Chem-Dry carpet cleaning, has a puppy named Koda who’s still perfecting potty training. Sometimes, when he gets over-excited, he “leaks,” says Hatch. Fortunately, Hatch knows a bit about rescuing rugs.
Hi I have a cat who keeps peeing in the same spot (next to rat cage) he’s been treated for a UTI as a precaution even though the vet doubted an infection and was convinced it was all behavioural and he was territorial, the meds were a precaution. Anyway I’ve tried other things with the pet rats and now I need to regime as they are getting stressed with smell of cat Lee (yes he’s neutered) so they scent mark even more which in turn stresses kitty and makes him scent mark also. I live in UK and have never seen peroxide in shops, do you think I could clean up without the peroxide? I have been using a UK enzymatic cleaner called urine off cost around 15gbp ($26) so it has cost a fair bit, but the smell remains. I’m hoping when the rats have been regimes that his urge will go, but with HIS smell still there who knows? Any suggestions??
Bleach your cement floors and bare walls. Although this method is widely disputed because of the deadly reaction bleach has with ammonia (which is found in cat urine), if you go about it carefully, it can be an effective way to kick the urine smell out of your life for good. First, wash the soiled area with any appropriate cleaner you have that DOES NOT contain ammonia. Once clean, wipe the area down with fresh water to remove any residue left behind by the cleaner. Next, do it again. I know it sounds laborious, but trust me, this works. After your second washing and wiping, employ your bleach. In a clean spray bottle you can pick up from the beauty section of any Target store, mix a 10:1 water to bleach solution. Make sure the area you are cleaning in is well ventilated, put on some rubber gloves and get to work. Spray on lightly, let sit for about 30 seconds, and wipe off with a clean damp rag.

Go ahead and replace the cover, then allow the area to air dry. A high-quality enzymatic cleaner will continue to consume odor sources until they’ve been completely eliminated. If after the first application, the odor remains, reapply after the surface has dried.
this little dog keeps sneaking off and using it in the house. .. after being outside with the other dogs… I keep smelling urine…. I can’t stand it..I tried vinegar. ..is there such a thing to detour them from using it in the house. .??????
The type of surface that you’re going to apply on is also a factor to consider. See if the product is recommended for your upholstery, carpet, floor, and so on. It’s best to choose removers with a natural bacterial formula. They have no harm to your health and also very good at their job.
Cats spray, or urine mark, as a normal way to communicate with others. While most cats mark by releasing small amounts of urine on vertical surfaces, occasionally they may also spray on horizontal surfaces, or even defecate. The majority of cats that spray are males that have not been neutered; hormones can play a significant role in urine marking.

Cats make wonderful pets. They are affectionate (at least sometimes), they don’t need to be walked outside when the weather is cold and rainy the way dogs do and they are pretty low maintenance as far as animals go.

I had a cat that started ‘marking’ his territory on a couple of areas of carpet. After shampooing the areas several times with a product specifically made for pet odors… the smell lingered. I was intrigued by the many positive reviews of Odorzout, I decided to give it a try. WOW… I am hooked. What a wonderful product!!! A HUGE plus is that it is natural. Thank you.
Did Fido or Kitty leave you a present again? Maybe you found an old surprise when you went to rearrange the furniture? Regardless of when the deed was done, you can restore your carpet or floor to its former glory. All you need is some cleaning know-how and a little elbow grease. This wikiHow will show you how to remove new stains, old stains, and use home remedies to maintain your clean home.
I have come across a flash light like device that emits a “black light ” that when shined onto an area that has urine stains the light will illuminate with a bright light color making it possible to detect urine srains. This light is available on Amazon for about $7:00. Using in a darkened room will help spotting the stains easier.
This is why it is absolutely essential to use a cleaner that can break down the uric acid. Soap, vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, chlorine, and hydrogen peroxide (to name the most common cleaners) simply are not chemically capable of breaking down the uric acid in cat pee. These cleaners and deodorizers only temporarily make the smell go away and appear to work because they do clean up the other components of the cat urine. But when exposed to humidity, the uric acid salts cause the uric acid crystals to reform. This process releases the smell again; not always at levels detectable to the human nose, but the cats’ more sensitive noses can smell it. And the scent of their urine outside of the litter box encourages many cats to continue urinating outside of the box, often with their families left scratching their heads wondering why.
I strongly advise that if you are contemplating the above instructions you stop. There are cleaners that can remove the stains and smell without you having to play laboratory and creating things that can ruin your home. My choice of cleaner for pet stains is Genesis 950. Cleans better then anything I have tried . . . and I have been through a lot of different products. But even if you don’t use that, use anything . . . just don’t do the vinegar/baking soda thing.
I have three Scotties. Cushing’s disease will cause a dog to pee a lot, drink a lot of water and you should check with your vet for diagnosis and medication. Currently have one that has it and previously had one that had it. Evidently it is fairly common in certain breeds. And urinary tract infections will also make doggies pee more frequently.
I used the vinegar/water mixture in my carpet cleaner due to the large area I needed to clean, although I did 2 parts waters and one part vinegar, then went back and just sprinkled baking soda on after using a brush to work the soda in, allowing it to dry and vacuum and the smell was gone.
