CR’s take: Weighing 24 pounds when empty and 30 pounds when filled with water and cleaning solution, this machine is well-sized for carpet cleaning. It has a removable tank with a useful carrying handle that makes trips to and from the sink much easier; you don’t have to drag the entire machine with you each time you need a refill.
I did get the (yuk, numerous!) clumps of pet hair on the old rug I cleaned, which for years had been vacuumed with a Dirt Devil “Vision” (Hepa filter type bagless) vacuum that I did not realize how crummy it was in light of the newer vacuums now available.
I have a 25 yr old satillo tile with concrete grout floor. I have always had a variety of animals in my home and for some reason this has been the place where the accidents happen. I have tried all kinds of things that appear to work but then the smell comes back. Especially in the damp winter time. I have a 23 yr old macaw that does have some respiratory deficiency in the house so I can’t use anything that will harm him.
Wash bedsheets and clothing often. Use either white vinegar or baking soda as a laundry detergent booster, as both products are effective in getting odor out of fabric. However, don’t use both at the same time. When using white vinegar, you should put your clothes through an extra cold water rinse or two. Wash soiled clothes and sheets as soon as possible, and be sure to store them in an airtight container in the meantime.
Wash your bed. Snuggling with your pet in bed can be blissful. However, it’s important to wash your bed often and well, since it will likely be harboring pet odors too. Strip pillow cases, sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers, and blankets from the bed. Machine wash all the linens and blankets. Add ¼ cup (59 ml) of vinegar to the wash for extra odor-fighting power. Air or tumble dry all the bedding.

Spray enzyme cleaner over the area. Non-toxic and effective, enzymatic cleaners work by breaking down stains into their basic elements, eliminating the compounds that create smells and stains. Using an enzymatic cleaner is the best way to help break down the proteins left over from the urine, removing the smell as well as the impulse for the pet to urinate in the same spot again.
Does it have a good look? Sure. But that’s about it. I bought this from Walmart not much over a year ago. Worked good for the first few months…not great, had time to time issues with the system drawing the liquids from the chambers. Got worse and worse over time. Not long after a years worth of use, which just so happens to be just beyond the warranty, it’s not drawing liquids from either chamber, the main suction area doesn’t work any longer…and the attachment suction barely works. On top of that…it comes with one of those power cords that tangles extremely easy upon itself. And where the power cord comes out of the machine is terrible placement. You have to fight wrapping and unwrapping the extension suction around the power cord for each use. Still not done. Small carpet fibers easily get pulled into the suction areas of the machine, to places where it’s impossible to remove the carpet fibers without breaking it open. Poor design…poor machine. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MODEL!!!
Understanding a little about the behavior and physiological capabilities of your pet helps in understanding why enzymatic cleaners are so useful for removing pet stains. Dogs and cats have a much more highly developed sense of smell than humans do and can detect odors that we cannot smell. We think the carpet is clean because the odor and stains are gone–and then the dog/cat returns and pees on the same spot.
Step 1: Create a vinegar cleaning solution consisting of one part white vinegar to one part water. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia smell of urine without fading carpet fibers, making it a good choice for cleaning and protecting your carpet.
My cat Chancey a male never had a problem with urine till someone threw Smokey a female out of a window of a car and then I kept her; they say cats are territory and he is acting out you could say he is jealous;I clean the spot with peroxide dish soap and vinegar; when it is totally dry I then saturte the area with baking powder for 2 months and I cover the area with 2 garbage bags I leave the bags on if he pees again all you do is to wipe with paper towels ;and spray the mixture don’t smell a thing!
Slowly pour your solution onto the site and gently scrub with paper towels or a soft brush. Let sit for 15 minutes, then dust with baking soda. When it’s dry, vacuum. You might need to do this a few times for tough stains or especially strong odors.
The ONLY thing that helps the smell of dried urine is to SEAL the subfloor with a shellac or polyurethane and then proceed to either put new carpet, or in my case….ceramic tile down., Nothing will totally get the smell of urine out of a carpet or a subfloor other than throwing it away or sealing it up. You can use products that will MASK it temporarily but don’t expect it to disappear.
Please do not use bleach! You will strip the carpet fibers of the color dye. If you would like to learn how to remove pet odors and stains please call a professional Like Benchmark Restoration & Cleaning
Bleach is another very common tool which is used to remove the traces of the dog toilet. Before implementing bleach on any surface make a test and make sure that the textile is capable to survive after this chemical ingredient. Especially it is important to test the surface in case you have very expensive carpet. Basically you need to try the mixture on the very small surface which is not that visible before implementing this method.
CR’s take: This affordable Hoover is lightweight, inexpensive, and a good choice for those who have small carpets or area rugs. When empty, this model weighs only 12 pounds, and it weighs 20 pounds when full with a gallon of water, making it easy to move around the house. Notably, this model doesn’t come with a hose, so you might not be able to clean tight areas, such as stairs, as easily, and it doesn’t have an extra carrying handle. Overall, this Hoover is very good at cleaning your carpets and leaving them dry.
5. Put together at onset: It was easy. A monkey could do it. It comes with instructions and Costco Concierge would help me if I had called, as well as Bissell. Says so right on the instructions, but I didn’t need it. BUT (big but here) the holes weren’t lined up correctly on the hose wrap hook and so it required both my husband and I to put that part on. I used it before he came home from a trip by tying the hose up around the handle. 🙂
The key is our product needs to get into contact with the source. We have another product that may be used in conjunction with OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator called the OdorKlenz Subfloor Treatment Kit. You can learn more here: https://www.odorklenz.com/product/odorklenz-subfloor-treatment-kit/
3) You might be treating a surface stain, but this does nothing to clean the padding. That’s where the odor comes from. That’s where bacteria grows. You have to kill what’s in the padding to make the carpet clean and to stop it from smelling.
The citrus scent is nice and easy on the nose and will also discourage all but the most stubborn pets from reusing the area. We all know the pain of having to repeatedly clean the same area and any kind of discouragement from continuing this process unabated is good for both us and our pets.
Search at night or in complete darkness. Pet urine can be difficult to see, especially when old, so maximize your search efforts by taking advantage of darkness. Either wait for night, or make the room as dark as possible.
I have found hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishsoap to work so well that the cats don’t go back to the same place twice, or sniff at places they’ve peed after treatment: a cat’s nose is the gold standard for judging whether cat pee smell is gone or not. Getting it to smell clean to a human nose is only half the battle if you don’t want repeat toilet visits to your carpet or furniture.
Thoroughly blot up as much of whatever it is you’re cleaning up. I can’t emphasize the importance of this step enough. Fold up a rag over it, place a heavy book on it, and stand on the book to make sure you really get it all out (sounds extreme, but it does a good job!) Mix 2 cups of white distilled vinegar with 2 cups of lukewarm water in a large bowl.
Some people have an abnormal connection between the intestines and their bladder. This can cause problematic urinary tract infections as well as smelly urine. Another sign to watch for is if gas or even stool-like substances appear to emerge from the urethra while urinating.11
