I tried the Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer. It certainly helped much more than the other two products I’ve tried. I had tried both normal Bissel carpet shampoo and the Hoover Petplus 2x odor remover solution; neither of them did a thing for the odor. While those two left no perfume reside, at least some of the area still smells of a mixture of non-objectionable perfume mixed with urine smell. – glenviewjeff Apr 2 ’14 at 14:28

UPDATE: Dec 20, 2014… my beloved cat, in her effort to tell me how much she wanted to go outside right that MOMENT, spilled a glass of RED WINE on beige carpet around 3AM. I didn’t realize this until waking, and found that it was soaked into the carpet…and some had started to dry. Of course, company is coming… classic panic moment… sounds so cliche but this is the truth (it IS the Saturday before Christmas)… soaked it with Rocco and *poof!* now I am only left with a wet, clean-smelling spot to let dry while I wait for my friends to arrive. This stuff CONTINUES to amaze me. I am so glad they have it in gallon size…I LOVE IT.
The smell will usually lead you directly to the area where your cat has urinated, though you might have to feel around with your hands for a wet spot if it is on carpet or cloth-covered furniture, or a sticky spot if it has dried on tile, linoleum or hardwood floors.[2]
That said, pet odor eliminators are not the only ones to pick and choose carefully. Other items can be just as dangerous, if not more so. Here are a few you need to keep away from dogs, or make sure you buy pet-friendly options:

This tool is universal and helps to remove the stain and odor of dogs pee. The most effective way is to buy the cheapest soap which does not have any additives or added smells. The best effect can be achieved if the soap is used immediately on the fresh dog pee. Soap is also one of the best removals of bacteria and dirt from the textile surfaces.
That’s awful. I’m sorry to hear about this. The only thing I can think of is to maybe wrap a towel around the head of your long handled brush to absorb some of the urine, rather than just pushing it around with brush bristles. I think I’d take a two-pronged approach. First your brush with a towel dampened with water, both to remove some of the urine and to soften the dried stuff. Then go down with a clean towel dampened with Nature’s Miracle. You might need to do that second step a few times until the towel starts to come up clean.
Nobody can argue that bleach can make just about any bathtub in America look clean and inviting. However, many families are approaching the green cleaning movement with an alert attitude. Not only are they concerned with the food they are presenting their children with » More
Blot the urine on your carpet with paper towels. Try to remove as much of the urine as possible. This will ultimately make your job easier. Use clean paper towels and apply pressure. Repeat with new paper towels until you are unable to soak up any more urine.[1]
Finally, your cat might not be fond of their litter box situation. It could be because they don’t like the type of litter you’ve made available, because they don’t like the box style, or because the box isn’t clean enough. As always, examining when this behavior began and linking it to changes in your cat’s environment is an important part of stopping the behavior.
Just like in the human world, so many unwanted feline behaviors can be explained by stress. Inappropriate urination is no exception. Cats commonly urinate outside the litter box because of unhappiness and anxiety over changes in the home environment, restriction of their natural behaviors, abuse, or unpleasant dynamics with other cats. If your cat recently started exhibiting this behavior after something in the home changed, it’s probably because of stress. Take a close look at your cat’s surroundings and determine what could be stressing them out, then neutralize those issues as best you can. Offering your cat a safe space to hide out or a tree from which they can overlook the home can help them to de-stress.

1) You might discolor your carpet – baking soda & vinegar. Think about it. It’s a paste that can interact with the chemistry of the carpet. Don’t believe me? Start reading through the comments. I am SO sorry about your daughter. That’s such a big thing to be dealing with and I can totally understand why everything else would get pushed to the bottom of the priority list while you’re trying to handle this. First off, I want to share Parents of Addicted Loved Ones with you. I can’t include a link, unfortunately, because Dengarden hides comments with links in them, but just Google it.
Kierstin, you can also use ammonia when cats have peed on the carpet. Ammonia works with the same premise as two negatives make a positive. The ammonia counteracts and eventually negates the pee smell.
