Commercial repellents are available in the form of sprays and contain different chemicals or natural compounds such as cayenne pepper that dogs don’t like and will avoid. If the dog has already soiled the carpet, clean it using an enzymatic cleaner or vinegar, and allow the carpets to dry completely. Spray the repellents generously and reapply as indicated on the label of the product you use.
To remove pet urine from carpet, start by absorbing as much of the urine as possible using damp towels and something heavy, like cans of food or a book, to weigh them down. Once the towels have soaked up most of the urine, re-wet the spot with water and spay it with an enzyme cleaner. Then, cover the spot with another damp towel and weigh it down again to soak up the cleaner. Allow it to sit overnight, then discard or thoroughly wash the towels so your pet can’t smell any remaining urine.
Another cause for musty smelling urine is phenylketonuria or PKU. This is a genetic condition that causes the buildup of phenylalanine, an amino acid that cannot be processed, in the blood and even your brain. As this buildup continues unchecked, it could cause brain damage and must, therefore, be treated as soon as possible. Behavioral problems like tantrums, having fairer eyes, hair, and skin than siblings who don’t have the problem, vomiting, eczema, epilepsy, tremors and musty smelling breath are other signs of this ailment.13
The OdorKlenz pet urine eliminator is your number one source for safe and effective urine and pet odor removal. The carpeting and flooring in your home often fall victim to pet accidents that need to be tended to quickly. Most urine odor eliminating products are primarily designed to focus on one aspect or chemistry of the urine odor problem, often just masking the urine odor, with perfumes and fragrances but the best way to attack an odor source is to have a product that can work via multiple pathways to achieve odor neutralization. OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator is ideal for use on carpets and rugs where pet accidents have occurred. Use with an extractor or let it dry, then brush and vacuum it out. For liquid and vomit, spills try our OdorKlenz Absorbent.

Let’s face it: Most of us don’t give much thought to our pee before we flush it out of sight. But the basic details of your urine — color, smell, and how often you go — can give you a hint about what’s going on inside your body.
Smelly urine have you in search of its cause? Abnormal smell and/or color of your urine can be caused by an array of factors. Urine excreted by an otherwise hydrated healthy person does not usually have a strong smelly odor and its appearance is straw-like in color.
Absorb smells with a deodorizer. There are lots of deodorizers that can target pesky pet smells. You can purchase one from the store, or make your own if you’re feeling crafty and thrifty. Two of the most popular items are baking soda and vinegar, which you can spray around the house, on carpets, on beds, and elsewhere to help remove smells. To make your own deodorizers:
If the wood on your furniture, walls, baseboard or floor is discolored, the varnish or paint has reacted to the acid in the urine. You may need to remove and replace the layer of varnish or paint. If you do so, make sure the new product is safe for pets.
As not only the carpet but also the floor can become smelly when you have pets, it might be a good idea to purchase a steam mop. By using steam and fragrance discs together you can eliminate the odour on the floor as well.
Basically, the gadget is an Ultraviolet or ‘Black’ light which has an LED, low energy bulb. Just shine it over your carpet or upholstery and those little ‘whoopsies’ will become visible so you can deal with them.
What I like most about this product over all the others is it does not have an overwhelming scent that competes with the urine. Instead, it has a clean almost non-existent smell and really seems to get rid of King PeeALots odor. My nose couldn’t be happier and for now the tiny murder machine is confused as to why his carpet doesn’t smell like contempt anymore.
Have two dogs, when we go out and be gone couple of hrs, they piss and poop on the carpet. It is in the smae spot everytime. I have scrubbed an did evrything to get rid of this smell. How do I keep them from using the bathroom and in the same spot?
The Bissell DeepClean Deluxe Pet is a very effective deep cleaner that is focused on taking care of pet stains and odours. It has a hair basket, which will trap the pet hair, so that you do not have to remove it yourself in the machine.

I used a rented carpet cleaner extractor which is way more powerful then the home versions and the Nature’s Miracle posted above, not the gallon type. I really thought it was a lost cause but it worked! 🙂
Yes, the product is safe to use on wood and tile. We recommend you try it in a small area first to check ease of removal first. Surfaces with tiny cracks and crevasses or a texture can be more difficult to remove the product from.
Try cleaning without detergent at first. If you find that you’re still not pulling up the stain, ask the representatives at the rental center what they recommend, and try to use as little detergent as possible.
Mix up ½ teaspoon (2.5 grams) of bleach with 1 quart (32 ounces/950ml) of distilled water. Do a patch test on a part of the carpet you don’t usually see, and make sure you won’t damage the color. Then saturate the area and allow the solution to soak into the carpet for at least 10 minutes.
Another way to use vinegar and baking soda, a staple in the green cleaning arsenal, is to mix them together in a spray bottle, said green cleaning coach Erinn Morgan, author of Picture Yourself Going Green. She suggests mixing one cup of distilled white vinegar with one cup of water and two heaping tablespoons of baking soda. Shake it up, spray it on the carpet, let it sit for five or six minutes, then gently blot it up with a fresh cloth, she said. The mixture will stay potent for a few months, so you might want to mix up a batch and keep it on hand if you have a puppy.
CR’s take: The Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 has front-to-back sliding brushes instead of rotational brushes, like other carpet cleaners, similar to the commercial version of the Rug Doctor you can rent. It’s relatively heavy at 43 pounds and takes 3 gallons of water to fill its tank—easily adding up to 25 pounds to its weight—and wasn’t very intuitive when our testers went to fill it up. It does have a long hose, at 155 inches, so you won’t have to lug it at every turn, and its dryness score is Excellent. But unless you have a lot of carpet to clean and plan to clean often, you might want to consider a lighter model.
After I walked on the salt I noticed some dampness pulling through. I put down the salt then paper towels to walk on over that. No moisture is showing on the paper towels. How long do I let the salt down before I do the vinegar and water. my dog is old (14) I had him for 12 years this is the first time we had such a problem. Carpet and padding are brand new.
Mix a solution of fifty percent white vinegar and fifty percent water. Use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar solution to the carpet. Work the solution into the carpet with a soft brush (or your fingers) to ensure it penetrates the carpet fibers below.
Finally, if you do want to use a perfumed product to help neutralize the smell, make sure that it is non-toxic to animals. Many products that are safe for humans are not always safe for dogs. Some home air fresheners – sprays, plug-ins and scented oils – can be harmful to a pet’s health, so when in doubt, just stick with the tried and true baking soda solution.
That’s a great question Gary. Regarding how to remove dog urine from carpet that has set in, we recommend the same products and techniques. People really rave about Nature’s Miracle and some members of our team have used it as well. We’ve read that it performs well for urine that has dried up, so I would recommend purchasing it and seeing how it works. Best of luck!
Yes! Thank you for saying that! Real (raw) food is the only way they should eat. I feed my German Shepherd Dog raw meaty bone, raw meat and raw organs. It upsets me knowing animals are forced to eat commercial food with diseased and euthenized animals in the ingredients. (Of course it’s not listed but it’s in there)
Ah so glad you’re giving it a try! For coffee stains you can try the ones above, or you can try gently rubbing a bit of soap (not detergent, which is often sold as soap, but true soap, such as castile) into the coffee stain. Lightly dampen the spot with water first. For any of them test a very teensy area first to make sure doesn’t discolor your carpet. Let me know how it works or if you have any questions-paws crossed that it gets the job done 😉
Urinary frequency is also important. Peeing six to eight times per day is “average.” You might go more or less often than that, depending on how much water you drink and how active you are. Increased frequency can be caused by an overactive bladder (involuntary contractions), caffeine, a urinary tract infection (UTI), interstitial cystitis, benign prostate enlargement, diabetes, or one of a handful of neurological diseases.9
The whole house has a faint kennel smell, even the morning after I wash all the throw rugs and mop all the floors (he’s too small to be marking furniture yet, so that’s not it) and her room positively reeks, but I can see no signs of missed accidents. His pen is made from old pallets, but it is just a two sided frame, and he is only in it when we are gone, so even if he has managed to pee on it, it shouldn’t smell THAT strongly, should it? If it could, can I fix it, or do I need to rebuild it with new, painted or varnished wood? What can I do?! I love cats, but won’t have them inside because I simply can’t stand that smell, so this is driving me crazy, like, no matter what I do, my house seems dirty! Help!!
A baking soda paste with some essential oils (baking soda, a few drops of essential oil, enough water to form a paste) gently spread/rubbed over the surface and allowed to sit for 30 minutes, wiped up, and then followed by a vinegar spritz, is useful if none of the above work for you (all the above can be used on old or fresh stains/odors.)

If the accident just happened quickly absorb it from the carpet with toilet paper…keep rolling up paper and stepping on it over the accident until it’s dry. Re wet the stain with febreeze and again lift it up with toilet paper. Then pour baking soda over the spot…let it dry overnight. You will see the urine comes up into the baking soda…why? I have no idea…when it’s dry..scrape it up ( I use the back of the dustpan brush) sweep it up into a dustpan and thoroughly vacuum. Voila..stink and stain gone. If it’s old..this will not work.
I know this was a long review and if you made it to the end with me, thanks! I just love this product. The people at SUN really stand behind it and make shopping with them great. They are fast to respond to any questions I have and very helpful. This product is something I will ALWAYS have in my house.
I have made a mix using peroxide and using a squeezy bottle have used the solution by pouring it in where each slat meets the other. I now have a lovely clean floor, lighter than the rest in parts but who cares!!
3) Install indoor/outdoor carpet. There are very nice indoor/outdoor carpets for very cheap. Less than a hundred dollars to do any room in your house and even if your animals are horrible, they don’t soak up smell like regular carpet.
Ammonia has a powerful smell dogs dislike. However, the smell of ammonia is similar to the dog urine smell you want to cover, so you might want to save this solution if all others fail. Dilute the ammonia with water and spray it over the carpets.

In those with diabetic ketoacidosis, the body uses fat to fuel the body instead of sugar or glucose. As a result, ketones or blood acids build up in the system resulting in urine that smells subtly different, accompanied by fruity breath.8
How do you apply the enzyme treatment in conjunction with the water/vinegar or peroxide, or do you not? Do you dilute the mixture after three months before applying the enzymes? How do you best recommend applying the enzyme mixture? What about essential oils? Would you recommend applying essential oils to the water vinegar or peroxide mix?
When your pooch leaves a puddle on the carpet, he also leaves behind an obvious stain. The soiled area might be less noticeable on a darker rug, but you’ll still be able to see it and even smell it if it’s not thoroughly cleaned. Vinegar is useful for removing dried dog urine stains from carpets because it . While vinegar alone isn’t effective when the stains are dried, teaming baking soda and water up with vinegar will get the job done.
Once the area is clean, make it unattractive and/or unavailable to your pet and the appropriate bathroom area attractive. As long as your pet can smell their personal scent, they will continue to return to the “accident zone.”
The enzymatic action of this cleaner makes short work of even crystallized urine. Keep in mind that “short work” in this instance isn’t an instant solution, but if you’ve got to deal with truly nasty build up an overnight soak can often take care of things.
My husband and I were thinking about taking him to ‘doggy school’, but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest ‘doggy school’ is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!
I foster dogs in addition to owning two of my own, so I have a lot of pups going through my house. Since they’re rescues and often times come from places where they haven’t even started on potty training, I have a lot of accidents in my house. And I do mean a lot. Pretty much everything you could imagine that could come out of either end of dog has probably ended up on my carpet at some point or another. Come spring time my backyard also turns into a mud pit, and I have dogs tearing in from the backyard tracking who knows what all over the place. In short, stain removers are a must at my house, and not only do they have to get the stain, but the smell as well. Unfortunately, it took me awhile to catch on to the fact that I could make my own and that they would work just as well as the dozen or so other expensive cleaners I’d tried before. Mud, blood, number 1 or number 2, here are 3 natural DIY solutions to keeping up on pet stains and odors.
