First off, let me start by saying, I have 4 cats, a Labrador retriever and 2 male humans that also live inside the house with me. The main “mess” is the oldest female cat, who hates anything but herself, so she pees on the carpet. If you put a clean, new cat box where she pees, she will pee next to it or make a new spot elsewhere. She was born and spent the first 4 months of her life in a cage in the pound so she has “issues”, we will leave it at that. No one else soils the carpet only she does. Unless they are “sick”. ‘Nuff said? So we are talking a daily weedle or two in the same spot on the carpet. I have always used my Little Green Machine to clean this up, but after paying a pro company to come do the entire job for $150 each time and only having it done 2-3 times /year, I decided I should save the money and buy one of these things based on the reviews on here. I did not purchase this machine on Amazon.com, but rather from Costco.com at a better discount.
Normal urine is clear and has a straw-yellow color. While the odor of urine can vary somewhat, in most cases, it does not have a strong smell. With dehydration, the urine is more concentrated and may have a stronger ammonia scent than normal. Consumption of certain foods, such as asparagus (which can impart a characteristic odor to urine), and taking some medications may be causes for changes in the odor of urine. The presence of bacteria in the urine, such as with a urinary tract infection (UTI), can affect the appearance and smell of urine. When there is an infection in the urinary tract, the urine may take on a foul-smelling odor as well as appear cloudy or bloody. A burning sensation during urination may be a symptom of a UTI. The urine may also have an abnormally sweet odor in uncontrolled diabetes, and some rare genetic conditions can also cause the urine to have an abnormal or strange odor.
I strongly advise that if you are contemplating the above instructions you stop. There are cleaners that can remove the stains and smell without you having to play laboratory and creating things that can ruin your home. My choice of cleaner for pet stains is Genesis 950. Cleans better then anything I have tried . . . and I have been through a lot of different products. But even if you don’t use that, use anything . . . just don’t do the vinegar/baking soda thing.
Before you use any products on furniture, it’s best to disassemble as much as possible. Remove pillows, blankets, slip covers, or any other materials so you can vacuum or treat areas separately and thoroughly.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder infections sometimes warrant urgent medical attention so you should be alert to symptoms. Besides foul smelling urine, other signs of a UTI are that you may feel the need to urinate more often, have sudden urges to pee, feel like the bladder isn’t fully empty even after you have peed, have a pain in your lower abdomen, and generally experience aches and tiredness. If you have back pain, fever, chills, or a burning pain when you pee, you should rush to your doctor at the earliest.5
After you’ve successfully removed the dog pee smell from your home, the last thing you want is to have to start all over again. Dogs may return to the scene of the pee crime if they can still smell their own personal scent, so be sure to clean thoroughly. You can also make the area unavailable by placing furniture or a rug over the spot.
If you’re not willing to do all of the research to make sure you get the perfect pick for your own home and needs… this BISSELL DeepClean Lift-Off might be exactly the ticket and it’s sure not to disappoint if paired with the right shampoo.
One of the nice things about this product is that it has Scotchguard built right into it, meaning that you get the cleaning and odor removal followed by a protective layer that will stay in place on the offending rug.
Now, the one area where some people will have issues with this unit is that it isn’t the strongest in construction. It’s fine for the use of most people, but if you’re prone to hitting the fireplace or running it into things… well, you’re going to have a broken machine quickly.
Try cleaning without detergent at first. If you find that you’re still not pulling up the stain, ask the representatives at the rental center what they recommend, and try to use as little detergent as possible.
Use an air purifier. Trap stinky dander, fur, and other odor sources with an air purifier equipped with a HEPA filter. If you have allergies, this solution is doubly awesome, because these filters reduce dust and other allergens in the air.
If you have a puppy, an elderly dog, or a dog still mastering their potty training skills, you’ve dealt with pee in the house. Depending on what surface they go on, and how long it sits before you find it, that stubborn dog pee smell can really stick around! But it doesn’t have to.
Most of those which aren’t direct use enzymatic products are made to be used with deep cleaning machines of various stripes. They work great for your carpet anyway, so why not make sure that you get something specifically designed to take care of the assorted feces, vomit, and urine stains that plague many pet owners?
I have tried everything to house train my puppy and nothing is working he has peed on my carpet and the smell of ammonia is making me sick! I bought a shampooer and have tried everything to get out the smell even vineger and baking soda the smell is still here ,please someone help!
Give your pet a bath. Pets love to play, which often means getting into messes. Regular bathing is a good idea for dogs and ferrets, and some other pets could use a wash now and then as well. Get your pet (and their favorite bath toy, if they have one) into a bathtub, wash basin, or bucket. Use a hose or bucket to wet your pet’s fur. Apply pet shampoo to the fur and lather it in with your hands until it’s nice and soapy. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of shampoo, and towel dry their fur. They should smell great, and look great as a bonus.
It shouldn’t- the kind you get at the stores is usually 3% dilute. Professional carpet cleaners usually use it at around 10%. Just make sure to always test for color fastness no matter what you decide to try 🙂
anything with enzymes will work in a spray bottle also , i have same issue ! going to have to replace carpet and not sure what to put back down ! have you tried some pee pads ? just lay a couple down at night !
Pee is your body’s liquid waste, mainly made of water, salt, and chemicals called urea and uric acid. Your kidneys make it when they filter toxins and other bad stuff from your blood. A bunch of things in your body, like medications, foods, and illnesses, can affect how yours turns out.
How do you apply the enzyme treatment in conjunction with the water/vinegar or peroxide, or do you not? Do you dilute the mixture after three months before applying the enzymes? How do you best recommend applying the enzyme mixture? What about essential oils? Would you recommend applying essential oils to the water vinegar or peroxide mix?
UTIs can cause serious pregnancy complications, including premature labor, low birth weight, and sepsis infections. Hence, pregnant women should let their doctors know if they experience unpleasant-smelling urine, especially if the smell resembles ammonia.
I have a cat that was sick with a uti and he urinated in this one spot over and over again. I’ve tried a vinegar solution, commercial cleaners and had it professionally cleaned and the smell will not go away. How do you recommend using the Borax? If this doesn’t work then I’m gonna have to pull up the carpet.
Citrus fruits contain enzymes that help break down odors. You can make a powerful enzymatic cleaner that removes most pet odors, but you need to be patient. These solutions have to brew for a few months.
Men usually don’t have symptoms, but women often do (e.g., yellow-green vaginal discharge), including that fishy odor which may seem like it’s coming from the urine, when in fact it comes from the vagina.
Accidents will happen, particularly if you have a young puppy or an older dog. How to get the smell of dog wee out of carpet is big business, judging by the number of products that are on the market to do the job! But do you really need these chemicals? In this article, I am going to show you some simple tips for how to get dog urine out of carpet without chemicals, fuss or expense!
5. Put together at onset: It was easy. A monkey could do it. It comes with instructions and Costco Concierge would help me if I had called, as well as Bissell. Says so right on the instructions, but I didn’t need it. BUT (big but here) the holes weren’t lined up correctly on the hose wrap hook and so it required both my husband and I to put that part on. I used it before he came home from a trip by tying the hose up around the handle. 🙂
Potassium permanganate is quite effective against smell of dog urine. It is a product which acts as oxidant as well as provides deodorizing effect. It is recommended to implement this method only on the dark surfaces as potassium permanganate is easily painting the textile or carpet.
Please don’t keep a pit outdoors. They need their people. You can use a puppy pad and train her to use it. I use adult human incontinence pads – the extra large size for my dog. They’re cheaper than the specialty dog ones. The other option is to check out eBay or Amazon for doggie diapers. They come in a disposable type and various cloth versions where you put a pad in it. The pet stores carry them, too, but they’re more expensive. Keep your dog sleeping beside you.
That has also helped tremendously in reducing the amounts of hairs being scratched off/shedding all the time and if you raise a puppy up with regular vacuuming, yes, you read it correctly VACUUMING (*With the brush attachment, on low, check it first on yourself and go around the ears, never on them!) they will absolutely love it as adults, especially on their tummies! They will come running when they hear you start up the vacuum as they think it’s time to be brushed!

When your dog pees on your carpet, there are a few issues you have to address — the smell, the carpet stains and how much of the carpet is saturated, i.e. how long since he peed (and how long the urine has had to seep deep into the carpet).
I have 2 older poms, Bear is 10 and had a bad time for several months of drinking every drop of water, several times a day and then constantly having accidents all over the house. And every time I took them out, he went a lot! First vet visit I was told that his urine was too watered to tell if he had any infection. Then told they wanted him brought back for expensive testing to check for cushings disease. Since I couldn’t afford $500-$1000 in testing medications, I decided to change their dry food to something more reputable. Since taking them off just 6 and on to nature’s balance then blue wilderness (slightly more affordable) Bear is doing great! Maybe 2-3 accidents in last 5 months! (That may have been my fault for not getting them outside for too long) I am not trying to talk bad about any vets or food labels, I just want to share this experience because it may be helpful to someone.

I have found hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishsoap to work so well that the cats don’t go back to the same place twice, or sniff at places they’ve peed after treatment: a cat’s nose is the gold standard for judging whether cat pee smell is gone or not. Getting it to smell clean to a human nose is only half the battle if you don’t want repeat toilet visits to your carpet or furniture.
Soak up as much of the urine as possible: Place a thick layer of paper towels on the wet spot, and cover that with a thick layer of newspaper. If possible, put newspaper under the soiled area as well. Stand on this padding for about a minute, and repeat until the area is barely damp.
UTIs tend to affect women and girls more, but men and boys can also develop UTIs. These infections are the result of bacteria entering the urinary tract. The bacteria make urine smell unpleasant and cause it to be cloudy or bloody.
If you find that your pup is peeing a lot inside of the crate then there is very likely a medical problem. Some dogs – females especially – just have weak bladders, too. So that’s always a factor. That’s really hard to deal with, but sometimes medication from veterinarians can help.
The ONLY thing that helps the smell of dried urine is to SEAL the subfloor with a shellac or polyurethane and then proceed to either put new carpet, or in my case….ceramic tile down., Nothing will totally get the smell of urine out of a carpet or a subfloor other than throwing it away or sealing it up. You can use products that will MASK it temporarily but don’t expect it to disappear.
Crate training seems to work with most dogs. Dogs want to sleep near you, so let them do that – put the crate right next to your bed. This will reduce whining and stress. Try to make it as positive an experience as possible – special treats or a favorite toy that they can have only in the crate. Limit water intake before bedtime.
There is also one trick which can helpful if you want to prevent repetition of the odor problem. If your dog is constantly peeing in the place you can sprinkle few drops of essential oil of apple, cinnamon or eucalyptus. This pleasant for human smell dogs do not like at all.
