Also, try to remove your shoes at the door to avoid bringing into the home the smells that cue “OK to pee here” response. I found that my dogs had more accidents right after professional steam cleaning because the padding released additional urine smell, again the cue. We went with hardwood and area rugs and close the doors to bedrooms that still have carpet. Crate a night. Happy life.
Enzymes are protein that help break up urine molecules and dissolve odors. Enzyme cleansers work, but they can take some time. You’ll spray or blot the area with cleaner, then let it sit for a while before blotting it up and scrubbing the spot. You may need to repeat this process.
Oprah Winfrey is an expert on many things, including best stain removers. Who knew?! Check out her advice on how to get pee smell out of carpet on Live with Kelly & Michael. She even recommends one of our top picks!
Urine is 95 percent water and five percent urea, uric acid, minerals, salts, enzymes, and various substances that would cause problems if allowed to accumulate in your body4. Normal urine is clear and has a straw yellow color, caused by a bile pigment called urobilin.
After doing the obvious–soaking up the wet urine, using a wet vac to dilute it and suck it back up, after shampooing, etc. and finding that some of the odor was still there, I let the carpet dry thoroughly, then used a plastic bottle with a nozzle tip and “injected” a pet odor treatment solution deep into the affected area and let it soak into the carpet padding and slab underneath the carpet–then let it dry thoroughly. I can’t smell any urine anymore–even when I get down on the floor and try! I do smell some of the nice-smelling treatment solution, though, but don’t mind that. Good luck!
Instead of purchasing expenses products, save your money and make yourself up a solution of rug cleaner in a spray bottle consisting of white vinegar and water (equal parts), dish washing liquid (a few drops). Have on hand hydrogen peroxide 3% – you can put on full strength as it’s already diluted. And some baking baking soda for later. You can also use SHOUT and Spray N Wash from your laundry room.
My cat Chancey a male never had a problem with urine till someone threw Smokey a female out of a window of a car and then I kept her; they say cats are territory and he is acting out you could say he is jealous;I clean the spot with peroxide dish soap and vinegar; when it is totally dry I then saturte the area with baking powder for 2 months and I cover the area with 2 garbage bags I leave the bags on if he pees again all you do is to wipe with paper towels ;and spray the mixture don’t smell a thing!
This year I got a Hoover WindTunnel 2 shortly after buying my new rug, so it has always had the benefit of a superior vacuum cleaner from the get go and WOW, nary a clump of hair deposited on it at all, while the other one was “clump city”!
In your lifetime, your kidneys filter more than one million gallons of water, enough to fill a small lake. Amazingly, one kidney can handle the task perfectly well. In fact, if you lose a kidney, your remaining kidney can increase in size by 50 percent within two months, to take over the job of both.3
When you take her outside to pee, try to train her to pee on command. When she does pee outside, lots of praise, lots of treats, lots of love, make the act of peeing outside the most magical thing ever.
Testimonial from Customer: Just wanted to let you know that everyone has told me that the smell is gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have no sense of smell so I couldn’t smell the cat urine, but everyone else could. Thanks so much.
In those with diabetic ketoacidosis, the body uses fat to fuel the body instead of sugar or glucose. As a result, ketones or blood acids build up in the system resulting in urine that smells subtly different, accompanied by fruity breath.8

I was very ill for a while and could not take my pet girl out as often as usual. She started peeing on the doormat which is just inside the front door on top of the wooden flooring.. I threw the mat out and followed the vinegar/bicarb hints but still the odour persisted and much worse when the central heating is on..I have an oriental type rug runner in the hall and I do not want her to start using this to pee on!!
2) Vinegar can direct your pet (cat, dog or rabbit), to pee in the spot where it was used. Don’t believe me? Read the human society’s website. If you put vinegar down, you are just going to have more accidents from your pet going in that spot.

I have cats. And when felines are around there can be an accident or two. I have tried multiple products that claim they break down enzymes, that are organic, they remove odors, blah blah blah making all claims but don’t work. So I read the reviews on this page and ordered 2 bottles. One for me and one for my boyfriend who owns a large dog. This product has gotten rid of the smell of cat urine unlike any other. And so well, that the cat has not re-marked that spot or any other. I have put my nose down to it, almost touching the previously soiled area and can’t smell anything! Even the product’s great fragrance is gone. I mean, it just smells…….clean! I totally recommend this product. The bottle is small but that is because it is concentrated. I am a believer, hallelujah, it works!!!!! I wish it came in gallon size and wish it had combined shipping when ordering more than 1!!!!!!!
I am often contacted by readers of my articles. This is the story of one reader, Sophia. She told me about her experience with carpets that smelled of dog urine in a house that her family has recently moved into.
“On the other hand, if you have carpeted stairs, you want to get a carpet cleaner that has a long hose, so you can reach up the steps,” says Larry Ciufo, who oversees Consumer Reports’ carpet cleaner tests. “You don’t want to put the cleaner on the top step and pull on the hose when you’re cleaning, because the machine could barrel down the steps.”

Find previously soiled areas using a black light. If you have a persistent odor problem in a particular room, use a black light to illuminate all surfaces in the room. Urine will glow under black light, and once detected can be cleaned.
I did get the (yuk, numerous!) clumps of pet hair on the old rug I cleaned, which for years had been vacuumed with a Dirt Devil “Vision” (Hepa filter type bagless) vacuum that I did not realize how crummy it was in light of the newer vacuums now available.
When your pooch leaves a puddle on the carpet, he also leaves behind an obvious stain. The soiled area might be less noticeable on a darker rug, but you’ll still be able to see it and even smell it if it’s not thoroughly cleaned. Vinegar is useful for removing dried dog urine stains from carpets because it . While vinegar alone isn’t effective when the stains are dried, teaming baking soda and water up with vinegar will get the job done.

Clean the carpets. Spot cleaning stains will help remove smells from specific areas, but you may have a bunch of different smells over different areas of the carpet. Tackle smells all over the house with a thorough carpet cleaning. This might take time, but be patient. A smell-free house is worth the effort.[3] You can either use a powder or wet shampoo to clean your carpets:
We are trying to remove cat pee smell from a couple of rooms in a house – what would you suggest to use a general cleaner – for tile floors and wiping down furnitures items (that are not cloth or carpet)… Should I spray a solution on the lower part of the walls or if I kilz the walls would that help? My son kept a couple of cats for a family member and they sprayed everywhere – we are gutting the room but have to treat the tile floor and walls and some of the furniture that we want to keep… Thanks so much !
First and obligatory action is immediately after noticing to remove a significant amount of moisture with a sponge and then to start washing the spot with the solution of water and vinegar. Some people just dilute the vinegar with the water in a ratio 1:3 but there are several opinions on this subject. We can try also to prepare the smell cleaning liquid in a different way.
Certain foods — most notably asparagus. Asparagus is notorious for causing a foul, eggy or “cabbagy” stench that results from a sulfur compound called methyl mercaptan (also found in garlic and skunk secretions). Only 50 percent of people can smell asparagus pee because they have the required gene. Cutting off the tips of asparagus will reportedly prevent the pungent-smelling pee…but of course, this is the tastiest part!
Avoid ammonia. High in alkaline, ammonia should never be used to clean pet stains. It will leave a sticky residue in the carpet and damage the carpet fibers, attracting dirt and other debris. It will also attract pets back to the same area, because ammonia contains the same uric acids and salts that are present in urine, making it all too tempting for your pet to remark the area. Never use ammonia on pet stains. [3]
Fortunately, the budget cost doesn’t seem to have had too much of a hit to its efficacy. This stuff works. You’ll be able to handle most stains and odors simply, just spray it down, give it some time to work, and then finish the job.
If your cat urinates outside the box and has no health issues that are causing it then it has territorial issues. Make an area the “cat’s area” and don’t allow other pets to relax or hang out in “her special area”. She is marking a lot to mark it as hers, she feels she has no space of her own. Trust me, I’ve had cats for almost 50 years and I did not think the territory idea would work but it did. I saw it on Cat Whisperer show.

I am so annoyed. upon moving a bed to another room I found three pee stains rather large under the bed smack dab in the middle of carpet. I tried three carpet cleaners and a toothbrush scrubbing allowing overnight soaking in. I tried three different at home carpet cleaner as well. When wet it looks like the stain is completely gone. But when fully dry stain reappears. Any suggestions? If I hire a commercial cleaner it will look great until it dries any help from anyone???
Start off by taking all of the furniture apart – pillows, blankets and the like – and vacuuming everything thoroughly. If the sofa and chairs have removable slipcovers or cushion covers, take those off for washing (details later). Get into the crevices of the furniture as deep as possible to remove all the hair, and flip the bed mattress to get both sides. On the floors, make sure to get under all of the furniture and in the corners, where “hair bunnies” tend to gather.
