Replace the litter. Understandably, litter boxes can get pretty smelly. To clean your box, empty its contents into a plastic garbage bag, then scrub the litter box with soap and water. To remove stains and smells that put up a fight, pour some vinegar into the box and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Then, scrub the box with a brush, rinse it out, and let it air dry.
Ileus is a temporary and often painful lack of movement in the bowel. This can lead to a bowel obstruction. Ileus is a common complication of abdominal surgery. In this article we take a close look at ileus, including symptoms, causes, and diagnosis. We also cover treatment and recovery from ileus.
It might sound strange to think that something as pungent as vinegar removes odors, but it does. Some pet odors, like a dog’s body funk that seeps into your linens or couch, are the result of alkaline chemicals, which the acids in vinegar neutralize, just as baking soda neutralizes acid odors.
Citrus fruits contain enzymes that help break down odors. You can make a powerful enzymatic cleaner that removes most pet odors, but you need to be patient. These solutions have to brew for a few months.
I did my movie theater in black because it was the only black I could find. I found out very quickly that almost any kind of stain can be scrubbed out and since it has a rubber backing the stain doesn’t soak through. There is no padding, just rubber on the back of the carpet. Double sided tape holds it down and installation is really easy. The weiner dog took to using my theater as a bathroom, and I didn’t realize it for over a week. Needless to say I was very angry. It came right up and never smelled again. 6 years of slumber parties with kids, me drinking too much, and being used as a base of construction when I was tearing out the bathroom didn’t even phase the carpet. My wife even spilled a 5 gallon bucket of red paint on it once and then tried to be helpful by drying it up while I was at work. That came up too.
As for the cons, I like many others wish it had another 5 feet of cord as I have a large open floor plan in my home. If you have more of a traditional type of home this will probably not be an issue for you as you will not need more cord length.

Important: Before implementing hydrogen peroxide on your carpet try it on the small part of the carpet and make sure that carpet does not change the color. If the test is accomplished and carpet is looking good go ahead and wash the whole spot with the cleaning mixture.
Cover the stain with paper towels or rags and walk lightly over or place something heavy on top to soak up any excess liquid. Sprinkle a generous handful of baking soda over the stain when no more liquid can be pulled up, and mix together ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish liquid. Slowly pour the solution over the stain and baking soda. Gently scrub the mixture into the carpet fibers with a scrub-brush or cloth, and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Vacuum the area thoroughly. For tough stains, repeat the above steps.
For the most part, these can be separated into hard and soft surfaces. What works well on carpet, for instance, might not be quite as good for tile or hardwood. The latter can be particularly problematic when it comes to picking out a good cleaner but enzymatic cleaners are quite often benign enough to not affect their finish.
Rocco & Roxie’s Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator lives up to its name. This efficacious liquid will quickly and easily remove odors, but where it really shines is in handling those super hard stains.
That’s a great question Gary. Regarding how to remove dog urine from carpet that has set in, we recommend the same products and techniques. People really rave about Nature’s Miracle and some members of our team have used it as well. We’ve read that it performs well for urine that has dried up, so I would recommend purchasing it and seeing how it works. Best of luck!
Everyone is different, but most people need to empty their bladders up to eight times a day. That can change depending on how much you eat and drink, especially caffeine and alcohol. It could be a side effect of medications, too. Pregnant women and older people usually have to go more often than others.
Try an enzymatic cleaner to start. Wet the area with cool distilled water, pouring a small amount around the perimeter of the stain, moving from the outside of the stain toward the center. Spray an enzymatic cleaner on the wet spot, and allow it to sit overnight. If your carpet is wool, make sure you’re using a wool-safe cleaner.
Is your dog still going on the floor? Getting dog urine out of your carpet doesn’t have to be hard, but you’ll need to act quickly. Dog urine that is allowed to dry will not only stain the carpet, but will make it easier for harmful bacteria to start multiplying. The following are ways to get dog urine odor out of the carpet to prevent future repeat incidents.

If you need to get the smell of dog urine out of your carpets, spray or pour a mixture of one part vinegar and one part water onto the carpet where the urine is. Let the vinegar soak for at least 10 minutes, then blot up the solution with a sponge or paper towel and let it begin to air dry. When the vinegar is almost dry, sprinkle baking soda onto the wet spot on the carpet and let it sit for about 15 minutes, then vacuum it away.
If you have thick carpeting and padding, like I do, it does NOT work well at all. I spent the better part of half an hour attempting to get the water sucked out of the stairs with the hand tool. In order to get it to work well, you have to press down HARD, otherwise, it doesn’t suck the water out completely. No problem? Well, the brush works basically with the suction. When you press hard (being a weak upper body person, that meant I had to throw my weight into it), it stops the brushes from spinning. Kind of the entire idea of the tool, I would think. I ended up using the entire shampooer, not the tool on the larger/curved stairs at the bottom of our staircase and the tool to complete the top thinner stairs-which there are more of, hence the half hour cleaning time for 22 stairs. Basically, the stair tool is a “dud”, in my opinion, unless you have thin carpet. Even then, I think the brush spins rather weakly, making it not really a scrubbing tool. I still LOVE this shampooer and have very thick carpeting and padding which is able to be walked on within 2 hours and bone dry after 4-5 due to the great suction on this machine.
I have had this for a couple years and have had nothing but problems with it since I got it! Bissell is cheaply priced for a reason! I swore their vacuums off long ago, I should of never caved and got a rug scrubber made by them. This thing has been nothing but a pain, it does not clean at all! when my carpets were damp they appeared clean, once fully dried all stains were still there! And I used their expensive cleaning solutions! Then the dirty water started mixing with the clean water no fix there unless you want to buy a new water tank/bladder I wasn’t looking to spend more money on a piece of junk . Then it stopped spraying – fixed that issue by watching YouTube videos, now it leaks water out from some where that I can’t figure out, during use, and then when I shut it off I get a huge amount coming out from behind a wheel and end up with a puddle on the floor! Do not waste your money on any Bissell product! I know I won’t ever do it again, I’ll stick with Hoover & Eureka!
Isopropyl alcohol, better known as rubbing alcohol, is an effective disinfectant and has antibacterial properties. Its powerful scent is not agreeable for canines. Dilute rubbing alcohol using one part alcohol and one part water and spray it on your carpets. Reapply the mixture weekly or after each cleaning of the carpets.
I have 2 older poms, Bear is 10 and had a bad time for several months of drinking every drop of water, several times a day and then constantly having accidents all over the house. And every time I took them out, he went a lot! First vet visit I was told that his urine was too watered to tell if he had any infection. Then told they wanted him brought back for expensive testing to check for cushings disease. Since I couldn’t afford $500-$1000 in testing medications, I decided to change their dry food to something more reputable. Since taking them off just 6 and on to nature’s balance then blue wilderness (slightly more affordable) Bear is doing great! Maybe 2-3 accidents in last 5 months! (That may have been my fault for not getting them outside for too long) I am not trying to talk bad about any vets or food labels, I just want to share this experience because it may be helpful to someone.
The following chart outlines some of the most common color variations for urine and their possible origins. The majority of the time, color changes resulting from foods, medications, supplements, or simply dehydration. But there are certain signs that warrant concern.
The first solution most people try is a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Mix a cup of white vinegar, two tablespoons of baking soda, and a cup of warm water then apply it to the stain while the whole mixture is still bubbling.
I ran into a problem with my one dog going pee in the house and I knew something was wrong because I let her out every hour. So I ended up taking a urine sample to the vet and she had crystals in her urine which causes great pain in their bladder. The vet said it was like little pieces of glass in her bladder. I am treating her with Crananidin and Cosequin every other day because when so took it every day her poop was like soft serve ice cream. Works great no more pee in the house. Consult you vet for proper dosage. Nutramax pharm.
Ah how I can relate to this scenario! After almost 30 foster dogs coming through my house (most not housebroken to start with) I know the battle with lingering odor well-and the frustration of having the dog go outside only to come in and find a blanket or rug to go on. And that feeling of never having your house clean! If none of the above cleaners work for you, you can always try a commercial product (of course natural is best!)-if you go that route I would recommend Biokleen Bac-out. I wish I had a magic solution, but cleaners aside, maybe I can offer some advice that can help.
Soak up as much of the urine as possible: Place a thick layer of paper towels on the wet spot, and cover that with a thick layer of newspaper. If possible, put newspaper under the soiled area as well. Stand on this padding for about a minute, and repeat until the area is barely damp.
Great article Sally, definitely covers this topic in-depth! However, we’ve got some carpets in a rental apartment that have old, and I mean really old, and now somewhat crusty, pee. What would you recommend as the best carpet cleaner for old pet urine?
After I read about 950 here, I did some research and read reviews. I ordered the gallon size and it removed the stains I had been fighting for months. It is absolutely awesome. I was so glad that I came across it, I had to come back just to thank the person who introduced me to it!!
This spot cleaning unit fits away quite easily, and you’ll find that you can store it just about anywhere. Small cleaning closet? You’ll be good. You’ll have to put in the work, the bristles aren’t exactly fantastic and it’s not the best option for pet hair, but for some people, it will be the perfect fit.
Avoid ammonia. High in alkaline, ammonia should never be used to clean pet stains. It will leave a sticky residue in the carpet and damage the carpet fibers, attracting dirt and other debris. It will also attract pets back to the same area, because ammonia contains the same uric acids and salts that are present in urine, making it all too tempting for your pet to remark the area. Never use ammonia on pet stains. [3]
Wow. All I can say is, wow! I am amazed at how well this worked. I had given up hope on ever getting the urine smell from a large, expensive wool rug in our living room. It was dreadful no matter how many times we cleaned it, even with an industrial cleaning machine.  I cannot believe how fresh it smells now.  I wish I had found this years ago! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!
Leslie Reichert, a self-described “cleaning coach,” editor of Clean Green Living Magazine and author of The Joy of Green Cleaning, prefers to hit dog urine stains with a few squirts of hydrogen peroxide. Spray the stain, let it bubble up (that means it’s working) and let it sit for 10 to15 minutes before sopping it up with a rag. “Be sure to spot test first to make sure the hydrogen peroxide doesn’t discolor your carpet,” she said.
What you are smelling may just be her natural dog odor once the shampoo’s fragrance has worn off. If it smells like it’s something else, try to figure out if she is getting into something that gives her that smell.
That has also helped tremendously in reducing the amounts of hairs being scratched off/shedding all the time and if you raise a puppy up with regular vacuuming, yes, you read it correctly VACUUMING (*With the brush attachment, on low, check it first on yourself and go around the ears, never on them!) they will absolutely love it as adults, especially on their tummies! They will come running when they hear you start up the vacuum as they think it’s time to be brushed!
Mix a solution of fifty percent white vinegar and fifty percent water. Use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar solution to the carpet. Work the solution into the carpet with a soft brush (or your fingers) to ensure it penetrates the carpet fibers below.
Sometimes dog urine accidents have already dried because you did not notice them previously. You can find dried urine spots on your carpet with the aid of a black light. The dog urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room. Hand held black lights are quite inexpensive usually costing between $15 – $25.

There are a few different types of carpet cleaning machines out there to be aware of. Some are definitely easier to use than others, allowing them to be used by those who are a bit less physically capable.
Oprah Winfrey is an expert on many things, including best stain removers. Who knew?! Check out her advice on how to get pee smell out of carpet on Live with Kelly & Michael. She even recommends one of our top picks!
The best carpet cleaner products for pets should not only simplify clean-ups, but also work to discourage pups from returning to the same area of your home when they need to go. Because pups are often prompted to relieve themselves in the same spot by the scent of their own urine, you’ll want to pick up a pet carpet cleaner that not only gets rid of those tough-to-remove stains, but works to wipe out all traces of the odor as well. Many dog and cat parents agree that by removing all traces of odor and stains, the best carpet cleaner for pets makes it easier to teach them to seek an appropriate place to take care of business.

Find previously soiled areas using a black light. If you have a persistent odor problem in a particular room, use a black light to illuminate all surfaces in the room. Urine will glow under black light, and once detected can be cleaned.
Slowly pour your solution onto the site and gently scrub with paper towels or a soft brush. Let sit for 15 minutes, then dust with baking soda. When it’s dry, vacuum. You might need to do this a few times for tough stains or especially strong odors.

UTIs tend to affect women and girls more, but men and boys can also develop UTIs. These infections are the result of bacteria entering the urinary tract. The bacteria make urine smell unpleasant and cause it to be cloudy or bloody.
