“remove urine rug -how to get rid of pet urine odor”

A: Many cooks suggest that opening the windows as one way to get rid of cooking odors while preparing meals. There are also other options, such as brewing coffee, baking something aromatic, making a simmering potpourri and leaving out a bowl of vinegar to eliminate fish odor, onion odor, garlic, cabbage and a variety of other smells that tend to linger after cooking.
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to put Stinkers! to the test on several occasions, and I wanted to share how well it performed in these five ultimately stinky situations (spoiler alert: AMAZING!):
Clean old messes thoroughly. Cats are creatures of habit. No matter how many times you say “No! That’s a bad kitty!” your odorous little friend will continue to think it’s ok to utilize the new pad until they can no longer smell their own vile urine on that spot.

When antimicrobials are used, they destroy the organisms that produce bad odors, and thus, if the microbes are dead, they can’t keep stinking things up (although you would think that rotting microbe carcasses would produce a stink of their own).  However, these chemicals may also kill the microbes we want to keep around.  Microbes create unpleasant odors when they excrete what they have eaten. (except they don’t use toilets – savages).  Aveho targets the resulting unpleasant odors, but does not target the microbes themselves.
Well, we finally had to euthanize our dog for congestive heart failure about six months after the start of this urine issue. A month or so afterwards, the carpet odors were undetectable. I’m not sure which product did the “trick,” or if it was just a matter of time for the smell to dissipate. It also could have been that somehow our dog was periodically urinating in the same spots without us noticing.
Steam-clean old stains. A rented cleaner can produce steam that’s hot enough to sanitize the carpet, after which the water can be vacuumed up again. Alternatively, if the spot is particularly large or stained, you can hire a professional cleaner to manage it.
Pets are great, but they don’t always smell that way. Even the cutest cats and dogs can make your rugs and furniture stinky if you’re not vigilant. Worse, even the best pets can have accidents on the rug.
The Washington Post have published an article about the dangers of various pesticides and other related chemical products that owners often use at home and forget that their dogs may come in contact with this. Always look for products that are safe for your dog, and better yet, purchase products made with as many natural ingredients as possible.
The whole house has a faint kennel smell, even the morning after I wash all the throw rugs and mop all the floors (he’s too small to be marking furniture yet, so that’s not it) and her room positively reeks, but I can see no signs of missed accidents. His pen is made from old pallets, but it is just a two sided frame, and he is only in it when we are gone, so even if he has managed to pee on it, it shouldn’t smell THAT strongly, should it? If it could, can I fix it, or do I need to rebuild it with new, painted or varnished wood? What can I do?! I love cats, but won’t have them inside because I simply can’t stand that smell, so this is driving me crazy, like, no matter what I do, my house seems dirty! Help!!
If you’re tired of constantly cleaning up after your cat, or you fear that the urine has soaked down to the carpet pad or throughout your hardwood floor, call a professional. Granted, it will cost more, but it is likely to be more effective.
Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator does such a great job at removing odors that pets never go in the same spot twice! Dogs who frequently mark their territory discontinue to do so in the same spot thanks to this product. Customers point out that this is a concentrated solution and to be sure to follow the directions on diluting, as you will not need more than is in the directions.
Hi Eric! I just discovered your website and was reading all the comments. I’ve had indoor cats for many, many years. I have probably come close to using every product on the market to get rid of the urine smell in my carpet. I even have a can of “Resolve Pet Expert” carpet cleaner (Kent’s solution to the problem back in February). Yes, Resolve does seem to work at the moment – but it certainly doesn’t last. The white vinegar solution works great as does the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dish liquid solution. I really just wanted to say kudos to your response to Kent’s comment back in February 🙂 There was no need for his rudeness so thank you for your response.
However, I do have a cat who, for the past ten years has always urinated on piles of clean or dirty laundry, bathroom rugs, carseats, etc. He’s healthy, it’s just a very annoying quirk–especially when he does it on stuff that belongs to my kids. Needless to say, he was my inspiration for writing this.
I just wanted to say ” thank you 🙂 “. . I tried the recipe for stain pet and odor remover in the carpet of a car that I just got. The car was so smelly 🙁 . few days ago I tried a remover that I bought in a retail store and nothing , the strong odor was still there 🙁 . now , the odor is gone 🙂 , I used the recipe # 1 , I love it , it is easy to prepare 😉 .
Let this sit while you go get some paper towels or a cleaning rag to blot up the liquid. When you’ve finished blotting up as much as will come up, cover with a towel until dry or dry enough to tell whether or not you’ll need to repeat these steps again.
Diana, that’s a really good question. What is the material? For canvas tennis shoes I’d try soaking them in hot water and a cup of OxiClean Versatile, then running them through once more on a hot setting and letting them air dry, preferably in the sun. For something like suede or leather, I would wipe down the surface of the shoes with a clean cloth and a mixture of white vinegar and water. I would clean the inner sole with an upholstery machine like the BISSELL Little Green ProHeat.
Odor Destroyer is not a simple air freshener designed to cover the smell with a stronger scent. Designed specifically to deal with difficult odors like cat urine, Odor Destroyer is a formulated blend of odor eliminating compounds. The fragrances in Odor Destroyer are present only to leave your home smelling fresh while the active ingredients neutralize the source of the odor.
Re-wet the spot with water. After you’ve lifted the towel, pour a small amount of cold water over the spot again. Start pouring just outside the perimeter of the stain, slowly moving toward the center. This will prevent the water from spreading the urine out into an even wider circle. Allow the water to work through the stain for about a minute.
Several of the dog deodorizers and pet odor eliminators you’ll find at Petco can be used on any surface and work to eliminate foul smells on contact, so you won’t be left stressing over lingering scents. With products for use both in the air and on surfaces, worry over pet odor removal will seem like a thing of the past. From carpets to hardwood floors, you’ll find pet odor eliminators that can successfully clean up marking behavior and accidents in every room. Most pet odor removers not only help simplify clean-ups, but also work to remove deep-set stains and lingering traces of pet pheromones. This will help discourage your dog from returning to the same spot in your home when they gotta go.
Now, here is my problem: I brought a stray Cat, who was in a bad fight with another animal, to a No-Kill Rescue Shelter which was about 45 minutes from my house. Unfortunately during the trip he peed in the cat carrier which leaked into the front seat on my car and I didn’t notice until I got back in my car. The smell was making me gag so bad I had to stop at a store and get something! I ended up getting an enzymatic clear which cleaned the spot but didn’t do much for the odor. Since then I have tried other enzymatic cleaners as well as Vinegar, soap and baking soda solution, as well as vinegar alone. It has calms the odor but I still smell it while in the car, especially on hot days. I will try this one with Hydrogen peroxide though. If this doesn’t work I may have to buy a new seat! Thank you for all the advice!
We have only had good results with the enzyme based Natures Miracle product in the red sprsy bottle, unless it has been changed . Their aerosol can carpet product uses a strong masking perfume abd we do not recommend that version.
Thank you so much!!!!! I am having this problem with one of my dogs. We have been using the baking soda and that dries it up. We have tried all kinds of store bought sprays that promise to work, but none of them do work. The vinegar sounds perfect ( the way you explained it makes perfect sense.) I am going to start doing it today. I just stumbled on this, Thank God for that.
Thank you again for all the responses and I hope one day to get a book published. As of now, I just update a file with favorite pics of myself and a pre-written obituary for my husband to publish in case my cat does accomplish her life long goal. Within the three column long obituary, I added few lines about being an “expert Amazon Reviewer”. Sounds morbid, I know, but I can’t trust my other half to use a decent picture of my face or remind the public why they will miss the Unhinged Crazy Cat Lay Who Is Not Fond Of Cats.
Deana, you should really get yourself a handheld blacklight to help you find the cat spray. In the meantime, your guess for a masking agent is as good as ours. Maybe try some Fresh Wave, it’s good stuff. And of course, leave your windows open if possible.
Before buying from Melaleuca, I would check out the reviews on them and the BBB. Many people are complaining of being sent unwanted merchandise, having their CC billed even though they have ordered nothing, and of being harassed and threatened when they attempt to close their memberships. Personally, it would not be worth it for me to deal with a company like that no matter how well their products work, but I’ll leave it to you to judge that for yourself.
Wipe up and blot. Using paper towels, blot up as much of the urine as possible if the surface is fabric or carpet. With these surfaces, there is a danger of the urine soaking into the fibers of the material. Use a gentle dabbing motion to blot up the urine.[4]
Mix a two-parts water and one-part vinegar solution. Pour this mixture over the stain and soak for about 3 to 5 minutes. Then blot the area to soak up the excess liquid.[15] Note that vinegar should not be used on marble or stone surfaces.
Hydroxyl Generators are unique because they work around the clock in occupied areas. Unlike ozone generators, hydroxyl generators can be used in occupied spaces.  It’s safe for people and pets to stay in the area that’s being treated. If you have a lingering pet odor such as litter box smell or pet bed areas, consider a hydroxyl generator to continually treat the air and remove the odor causing molecules around the clock.
Clean or dispose of the towels. Because the towels you used for absorbing the urine will have faint traces of your pet’s scent, it’s important to keep your pet from marking them again. Help your pet avoid the temptation by discarding the towel.
This will get rid of a great deal of the smell, but to really do a thorough job, you might want to rent a carpet cleaning machine with an attachment for furniture – or call a cleaning company to do it for you. Always start with neutralizing as much of the smell as possible before the shampooing, though, or all you will be doing is creating a hybrid of dog smell and perfumed shampoo. Not a good combination. And don’t use carpet shampoo on the furniture, or you could end up with ruined and smelly furniture.
