Assess the damage. If the urine is old (as in, you just discovered the accident two days after the deed was done), throw the pile into a bag – paper or plastic will do – and douse the clothes in baking soda to help lift the urine. Seal the bag by either tying it or taping it shut. Let the clothes (or curtains, rug, etc.) chill like this overnight. If the urine is fresh, though, just head straight to the washing machine.
Before you use any products on furniture, it’s best to disassemble as much as possible. Remove pillows, blankets, slip covers, or any other materials so you can vacuum or treat areas separately and thoroughly.
Take your dirty laundry out of your room and wash it; also, don’t keep your shoes in your room. It might be a good idea to change your bedding and launder it more often. Lastly, open up the windows and let your room air out.
Some cleaning products work better than others depending on the type of carpet you have, such as natural versus synthetic fibers. Read the label on these products to find the one that can best remove dog or pet urine odor from carpet.
This spray removes litter box odor. Other sprays claim to but fail. I have 3 or 4 litter boxes and my most smell sensitive friends tell me they do not smell the cats. The original bottle had “litter” spray on it but the “zero odor pet” works just as well.
I collect all my laundry water in a big plastic tub in the back yard, and it had come to stink also. I sprayed the tub with Skout’s Honor and the filthy smell was instantly gone. 2 months later, the laundry tub has developed that smell again, and I know how to get rid of it now.
Whew sorry for that novel-I really could go on about potty-training. I hope at least some part of it proves useful. Stick with it and he’ll figure it out! Feel free to ask anymore questions you have-hopefully I didn’t just confuse you more! 😀
Urine is composed of things that require enzymes to break down its chemical bonds.[2] For example, when a pet pees, urea in their urine breaks down into a bacteria that produces the distinct scent of urine. As the urine is left longer to decompose, the smells become worse. Fortunately, most chemicals in urine are easily removed by water and other household detergents. However, uric acid is the only component that is not water soluble and must be broken down by enzymes.
Blot. Then sprinkle kind of a lot of baking soda. Then pour vinegar. It will fizz. Let dry. 24 hours probably. Vacuum. Only set back: your carpet will have a “clean” spot”. Dog will just pee another spot, tho.
This stuff removes the smell from anything! My 16-year old son has shoes and feet that smell to the high heavens. We’ve tried everything — including skin prescriptions. I sprinkle this in his shoes — the odor is GONE!! I put it in the pantry to stop dry goods from going rancid. The fridge, garage, son’s room, trash cans……. forget the air fresheners — just get rid of the bad smells. This in your answer — and a whole lot more economical than Fabreeze.
It did help me to remove the urine stains and a smell. However, it was awful chemical odor. I’ve checked on internet regarding the Peroxide toxicity…OMG, the vapor of Peroxide is toxic when inhaled. I tried to dry the mattress with a hair dryer and opened all the windows for a night and a day after to ventilate the room. But, still the smell did not go away completely. I wonder if this method of cleaning the surface is safe at all.
On hardwood or laminate floors, use paper towels, an absorbent cloth, or a mop to sop up the pee. I love these reusable, super-absorbent cleaning cloths. Just throw them in the washing machine after use.
Uric acid, the stuff that causes the odor, is not water soluble and will not respond to water-based cleanup methods. An enzymatic cleaner breaks down the uric acid and removes the smell. Soak the soiled area with the enzymatic cleaner — as deep into the cushions as the urine did. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

If this is the option you must do, Kilz is a paint that will block stains and odors. If you have a serious problem and have to repaint or replace flooring, Kilz will block the urine odor completely, so you can start fresh.
When I moved into this house the carpets smelt of cat pee which 2 of my dogs peed over them, not wanting to change the carpets until I decorate I used a steam cleaner on them, my dogs no longer pee there and I can’t smell any either. May be worth a try with a steam cleaner. I have found the small hand held steam cleaners better than those for the floors.
Re-wet the spot with water. After you’ve lifted the towel, pour a small amount of cold water over the spot again. Start pouring just outside the perimeter of the stain, slowly moving toward the center. This will prevent the water from spreading the urine out into an even wider circle. Allow the water to work through the stain for about a minute.
There are definitely some tricks to making sure that you’ve handled pet stains and odors in the best way possible. There are also some homemade remedies which people recommend and some of them are super efficacious.
Oh no, Jenni! Did it get into her mattress? I would definitely check in with a vet because as far as my experience has been, kittens are pretty intuitive about burying and peeing in a place where they can bury.
One possible cause that i haven’t seen here is that you dog/puppy may have diabetes. My puppy was not getting house trained so i took her to the vet to only find you she was very sick. If you still have problems contact a vet/trainer for help.
Hi, I recently moved house with my friend, and her cat has pee’d all over my bed, luckily it didn’t absorb into my mattress, just soaked up in my duvet, he also pee’d in a box I hadn’t unpacked yet. I have a kitten as well but she is using her litter tray and is kept in a separate room from him, so it for sure wasn’t her. How many times would I need to wash my duvet and what with? Getting really irritated with her cat now.
You need to soak the affected area thoroughly, and allow the solution a long time to dry, whether you have carpet, wood floors, or masonry flooring. No fans or open windows are needed here. In fact, it’s a good idea to place a piece of cardboard over the affected area to slow down evaporation. The solution works to eat away at the natural enzymes that are causing the odor in the first place, and they need time to do their work. If after all this, you still have pet odor problems, you’re going to need to take more drastic measures. With carpeting, you’ll probably need to replace it. And if the pet urine has made it into the subfloor, you may have to replace that as well. The same goes for wood flooring. It can be a timely, and costly, project. But when compared to living with the smell of pet urine, it’s often worth the trouble.
You can buy washable ones on different sizes off Amazon. I did this 5 yrs ago when we got out puppies an put them by out back door. Even though they go out right before we go to to bed, theres still times one or the other will pee on it 2 or 3 times a week late at night or of im gpne to long during the day. They’re 5yrs old now. I just wash one at a time with only vinegar an air dry while I put the other down. Well worth the $$
The remedy is to call a certified carpet cleaner to deal with your issue. They will have the classroom as well as hands on training in how to get dog urine out of carpet. Truck mounted systems and high-end portable carpet cleaners have the vacuum power to remove the cleaning solutions from deep below the carpet, in the padding. A certified carpet cleaner will have the experience to remove urine and the brown dog urine stains.

White vinegar is great to get rid of some odors, though it isn’t always effective against cat and dog pee. Used straight from the bottle or diluted with water, white vinegar will help neutralize pet urine odors, and it won’t leave behind a sour vinegar smell.
If you go to a horse store, you can get some stall neutralizer that works for the rocks. I live in the desert and so I really do not have grass. I sprinkle this every so often and it helps immensely. It will come in a 40 lb bag and it is safe for pets.

1. If the area is still wet you should first attempt to absorb the dog urine. Leaving it there to dry out will encourage bacterial growth, which causes the odor. The best method is to place several layers of paper towels over the wet area and tread on it to soak up as much of the dog urine as you possibly can. You may have to repeat this several times. Sometimes accidents have already dried because you did not notice them before. You can find dried spots on your carpet with the aid of a black light. Dog urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room; you can always save the expense of a black light to find the odors by using your nose instead.
No need to worry about staining either, this product breaks down the stains which can emerge from urine in a natural way. This allows things to get settled out and leave you with a clean floor that only has the cleaner’s scent to it.
