Another way to use vinegar and baking soda, a staple in the green cleaning arsenal, is to mix them together in a spray bottle, said green cleaning coach Erinn Morgan, author of Picture Yourself Going Green. She suggests mixing one cup of distilled white vinegar with one cup of water and two heaping tablespoons of baking soda. Shake it up, spray it on the carpet, let it sit for five or six minutes, then gently blot it up with a fresh cloth, she said. The mixture will stay potent for a few months, so you might want to mix up a batch and keep it on hand if you have a puppy.
I have come across a flash light like device that emits a “black light ” that when shined onto an area that has urine stains the light will illuminate with a bright light color making it possible to detect urine srains. This light is available on Amazon for about $7:00. Using in a darkened room will help spotting the stains easier.
Here at Chem-Dry, we love our pets. They brighten up our day and they’re always there to support us, through thick and thin. However, they can make it a real challenge to keep your home clean, healthy and smelling fresh when pet accidents occur.
I’ve been looking for how to remove dog urine smell from carpet and think I found the answer. My family grew up using Resolve and I remember it not working. However, when I got married my husband swore by it, so I gave it another chance. They must’ve changed their formula because it actually works! We’ve only had to use it a couple times, once when our dog went potty inside and another time when I spilled watermelon juice on our WHITE chair (shhhh don’t tell my husband). Thankfully both stains are gone and everything looks (and smells) great!
In the absence of other symptoms, such as pain with urination, cloudy or dark urine color, or unusual frequency of urination, there is usually little reason for concern. But reccurring ammonia odor in pregnancy should still be brought to a doctor’s attention.

The best carpet cleaner products for pets should not only simplify clean-ups, but also work to discourage pups from returning to the same area of your home when they need to go. Because pups are often prompted to relieve themselves in the same spot by the scent of their own urine, you’ll want to pick up a pet carpet cleaner that not only gets rid of those tough-to-remove stains, but works to wipe out all traces of the odor as well. Many dog and cat parents agree that by removing all traces of odor and stains, the best carpet cleaner for pets makes it easier to teach them to seek an appropriate place to take care of business.
Open windows. There’s nothing like some nice, fresh breeze to air out bad smells. In spring, summer, and fall, open windows throughout the house to create a breeze that will blow fresh air in one window and bad smells out the other.

For the record I used the 2X Pet Stain & Odor Formula 99K52 and LOVED it, it took stains out that I didn’t think would ever come out as they had been there so long. It worked so well that I’m not going to replace this old rug for awhile as it’s not looking too bad anymore. Yes, I can still see very faint residual marks where the red clay foot prints had stained it but I know where to look, if you just came in you wouldn’t see them at all. I was amazed at it’s stain cleaning ability.
I really hope you don’t have any pets. You’re part of the problem of over crowded pounds, unnecessary euthenasia and why some dogs have a hard time getting adopted. My dog has problems peeing in the house because she’s scared all the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if her constant fear, flinching, shakes and anxiety was caused by someone just like you.
Wash your bed. Snuggling with your pet in bed can be blissful. However, it’s important to wash your bed often and well, since it will likely be harboring pet odors too. Strip pillow cases, sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers, and blankets from the bed. Machine wash all the linens and blankets. Add ¼ cup (59 ml) of vinegar to the wash for extra odor-fighting power. Air or tumble dry all the bedding.
However, if you do want to use the hydrogen peroxide, make sure you only ever use 3% solution and that you always check for color-fastness on an inconspicuous area first as it could bleach the fibers of the carpet, leaving a permanent light patch as a reminder of the accident!
It can, but if the subfloor is covered by carpet or padding, you may want to consider the OdorKlenz Subfloor Treatment Kit in addition to the OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator. More on that product can be founds here: https://www.odorklenz.com/product/odorklenz-subfloor-treatment-kit/
Consider using ultraviolet light to explore more thoroughly. If you want to be thorough, buy a UV or fluorescent black light of a portable size. Look for a long bulb so you can cover more ground at much, preferably longer than 12 inches (30cm). Cheap bulbs with the housing included can be found at most hardware stores. Although pet stores sell the lights as well, they’re usually smaller and more expensive. They can also be purchased at a reasonable cost online, depending on how much time you have to wait around living with the odor.
As our aim is not just to wash the spot but to prevent our dog from peeing there again we should try to use some ingredients which has very strong smell. Using vodka or alcohol (as they have such a strong odor themselves) will help to avoid the future repetition of the pee smell situation. In order to eliminate the smell from the carpet surface we need to apply vodka by wetting the spot with the cloth or spraying it with the spray bottle. After applying the alcohol we should rub the surface with some force. After rubbing we should take a dry paper towel and wipe the remaining liquid from the carpet. We should again and again wipe the surface until the paper towel will remain completely dry.

Dealing with a urinary incontinence episode is never easy — but it can be especially difficult when the episode happens around other people. Dark clothing can help disguise wetness, but it won’t cover up odors. Fortunately, there are other ways to keep smells to a minimum.
Ah so glad you’re giving it a try! For coffee stains you can try the ones above, or you can try gently rubbing a bit of soap (not detergent, which is often sold as soap, but true soap, such as castile) into the coffee stain. Lightly dampen the spot with water first. For any of them test a very teensy area first to make sure doesn’t discolor your carpet. Let me know how it works or if you have any questions-paws crossed that it gets the job done 😉

One possible cause that i haven’t seen here is that you dog/puppy may have diabetes. My puppy was not getting house trained so i took her to the vet to only find you she was very sick. If you still have problems contact a vet/trainer for help.

A rare genetic condition, maple syrup urine disease causes problems with breaking down some amino acids in the proteins you consume. The result is your pee smells like maple syrup as the chemical buildup from undigested leucine, isoleucine, and valine changes how your urine smells. Due to the risk of brain damage in instances of fever, infection, or other physical stress, timely diagnosis is important. Lethargy, seizures, vomiting, and feeding difficulties are warning signs. It could even cause a person to go into a coma.12
How to get dog urine smell out of carpet from my experience. We have Resolve for pet stains and odors. We were with our dog when she had her accident inside so we were able to act fast. We blotted the area with a rag to try and pick up as much urine as possible, then sprayed the area and let it set in for a while. Then scrubbed really well and we haven’t noticed a smell or any stain.
I would like to thank you for this amazing remedy! I have two male dogs that were having a marking war in my living room and I like everyone else here had used countless products to get rid of the smell to no avail. The final straw was today when I cleaned my carpets and could smell nothing but the urine smell in that area. Then I looked up “natural home remedies for pet stains” and came up with your website. The solution of peroxide and dish detergent on top of the baking soda hasn’t even dried yet and my house smells WONDERFUL again. I will no longer be embarrassed to have people over to hang out!!
A baking soda paste with some essential oils (baking soda, a few drops of essential oil, enough water to form a paste) gently spread/rubbed over the surface and allowed to sit for 30 minutes, wiped up, and then followed by a vinegar spritz, is useful if none of the above work for you (all the above can be used on old or fresh stains/odors.)
After you have used the blotting treatment above to deal with wet stains or the blacklight gadget above to locate those ‘invisible; dry stains, it is time to tackle the odor! I like to keep a spray bottle handy containing a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water.

There’s no need to rinse or blot the enzymatic cleaner, you simply let it do its work, dissolve and dry. The length of time required depends on what version of cleaner you buy. Some require 24 hours, while serious stains may take up to two weeks to completely dissolve the smell and stain. Sometimes the smell gets worse before it gets better, so don’t be discouraged. In the store, look for the version of carpet cleaner that’s formulated especially for pet urine removal and is available in liquid or powder formula.
Obviously the best long-term solution is to get the little guy going potty outside. I am not sure what your process is, but adding the use of a crate/kennel (or in your case pen) to the regime can be helpful, in addition to positive re-enforcement. It’s a total pain, but it really cuts down on the accidents and is worth it in the long run. So for example as soon as the puppy wakes up, take him outside to go potty. If he goes throw a party and have a little play session. If he doesn’t go within 5 minutes or so, bring him back inside and place him in his pen-there isn’t any fun time until his business is done. Anywhere from 5-15 minutes later repeat the above process. When he does go, he gets let out to play run around etc. etc. but not before. Again it’s a hassle, but it really cuts down on missing any accidents in hidden places, and they pick up quick on the positive re-enforcement and learn to hurry up and potty so they can play!
Thanks justmesuzanne, but I haven’t found any odor problems after treating the area promptly with just vinegar and baking soda. Listerine is a good tip (apparently this product was first invented as a floor cleaner and only later became a mouthwash!!). I would definitely recommend checking that it has no effect on the color of the carpet by testing in an inconspicuous area first though.
Figuring out which product to use is the first step in making sure that your home stays fresh and neat no matter how many pets you might own. With the best pet stain and odor remover at your side, there’s no need to apologize for smells and stains that tend to accumulate with even the best-mannered buddies around the house. Figure out which is right for you and give it a shot, it’s time you start winning this war.
Great article Sally, definitely covers this topic in-depth! However, we’ve got some carpets in a rental apartment that have old, and I mean really old, and now somewhat crusty, pee. What would you recommend as the best carpet cleaner for old pet urine?
Use odor-reducing incontinence products. If you wear adult diapers or incontinence pads, make sure to read the package to see if the product contains odor-reducing materials. The odor reducer should not be a perfume that covers up smell, but a substance that keeps odor from forming in the first place.
On hardwood or laminate floors, use paper towels, an absorbent cloth, or a mop to sop up the pee. I love these reusable, super-absorbent cleaning cloths. Just throw them in the washing machine after use.
CR’s take: Weighing 24 pounds when empty and 30 pounds when filled with water and cleaning solution, this machine is well-sized for carpet cleaning. It has a removable tank with a useful carrying handle that makes trips to and from the sink much easier; you don’t have to drag the entire machine with you each time you need a refill.
First, elbow grease. Really try the heavy book trick-you’d be surprised how much comes up. It’s easy to leave some of the urine behind and then pour a cleaner on it and not have it work. You can try leaving the cleaner on for longer periods of time, and blotting not rubbing it up.
Re-wet the spot with water. After you’ve lifted the towel, pour a small amount of cold water over the spot again. Start pouring just outside the perimeter of the stain, slowly moving toward the center. This will prevent the water from spreading the urine out into an even wider circle. Allow the water to work through the stain for about a minute.
