Many of the articles on this site were originally posted, by me, on the Yahoo! Voices site (formerly Associated Content) between 2007 and 2014. That gave other bloggers plenty of time to “borrow” some of my articles without crediting me, which is why you may notice that some of my articles are the same ones you read on a different site, even with that blogger’s byline! Yahoo! Voices shut down July 31, 2014, and beginning about a month prior to that, I began reposting all of my articles onto this site. This is why my unauthorized reposts by other bloggers have a less recent posting date.
Urine is 95 percent water and five percent urea, uric acid, minerals, salts, enzymes, and various substances that would cause problems if allowed to accumulate in your body4. Normal urine is clear and has a straw yellow color, caused by a bile pigment called urobilin.
I have a term for some of my fosters-“ninja pee-er.” These are the pups that somehow manage to sneak off and go potty in a hidden corner and I have a lovely surprise several days later when the stain has set! Even though you haven’t seen any signs of missed accidents, I would suggest checking *meticulously* over any rugs/carpeting for spots you may have missed that set in. Even in corners, behind bookcases, and under beds (or on them!) Where the ninja pee-er strikes, they will strike again, and everything can just compound if you’re missing it.
what works for me….I have a a hoover steamvac carpet cleaner …so worth it… I soak up original area …poor vinegar solution over allow to sit then do the whole rugs with the cleaner and the solution you buy to go over it. Then I fill it with the vinegar mixture then add 100 percent pure essential oils (lemongrass, tea-tree,bergamot maybe 10 drops per gallon of each or just until im satisfied with smell) then i do the rugs with that mixture…the oils are antimicrobial, antibacterial,anti-fungal and anti viral…oh the antiseptic qualities among other things!!…it smells great..i will be adding the baking soda Thanks guys
So, without further ado, let’s discuss three of the best pre-cleaner shampoos around. They’re made for cleaning carpets and if you combine them with the right machine… you’ll never have to worry about a stained or smelly carpet again.
Accidents will happen, particularly if you have a young puppy or an older dog. How to get the smell of dog wee out of carpet is big business, judging by the number of products that are on the market to do the job! But do you really need these chemicals? In this article, I am going to show you some simple tips for how to get dog urine out of carpet without chemicals, fuss or expense!

Mix up your water and vinegar solution. After blotting up any excess fluid, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the soiled area. Pour the water and vinegar solution directly onto the baking soda to create a mini cleaning volcano that will actively eat away at the stain. Blot and rub gently dry with a soft cloth after letting it sit for 5 minutes.
Foamy: No matter what color it is, you should check in with your doctor if it consistently looks foamy and frothy. It may be a sign you have protein in your urine, which may mean you have issues with your kidneys.
“Your best defense as soon as you see an accident is to blot as much as you can with towels,” he said. “Then, put a few drops of green dish detergent and a little water on the area, place a towel over it and step on it so it absorbs as much as possible.”
The first solution most people try is a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Mix a cup of white vinegar, two tablespoons of baking soda, and a cup of warm water then apply it to the stain while the whole mixture is still bubbling.
The enzymatic action of this cleaner makes short work of even crystallized urine. Keep in mind that “short work” in this instance isn’t an instant solution, but if you’ve got to deal with truly nasty build up an overnight soak can often take care of things.
Compact cleaners don’t have the same amount of power as their larger counterparts but are easier to maneuver and tend to be quite a bit lighter. Some of the higher end compact cleaners can even be walked away from while they’re in usage.
Try an enzymatic cleaner to start. Wet the area with cool distilled water, pouring a small amount around the perimeter of the stain, moving from the outside of the stain toward the center. Spray an enzymatic cleaner on the wet spot, and allow it to sit overnight. If your carpet is wool, make sure you’re using a wool-safe cleaner.
Bought the Bissell ProHeat carpet cleaner to clean my dining room carpet. We got a new dog and he seemed to think that if you don’t get outside when nature calls that my dining room was the next best alternative. UGH! After one accident the odor stayed no matter what I used to get rid of it and from then on our dining room became “the bathroom”. The cleaner came with a pretreat spray bottle and a starter bottle of the pet order killer cleanser. It worked fantastic! Cleaner was a breeze to put together (4 screws), directions quite simple, and I never realized how dirty the whole carpet in that room actually was. I’m thrilled with the results and we have not had one accident since I cleaned that carpet 2 weeks ago. (Which tells me that the heated deep cleaning worked to get out all the odor.) Love it!! The unit comes with attachments for furniture and doggy accidents if you just want to clean up one spot. Our living room couch, office and master bedroom carpets will be looking good shortly.
Put on your rubber gloves, spray from the outside edge of the stain towards the middle, working the vinegar solution into the carpet fibers with your fingers or a clean, lint-free cloth, towards the middle of the stain.
First, our trained professional will do an inspection of your carpets with a special ultraviolet light. This light exposes any problem areas and odorous urine deposits that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Wash your bed. Snuggling with your pet in bed can be blissful. However, it’s important to wash your bed often and well, since it will likely be harboring pet odors too. Strip pillow cases, sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers, and blankets from the bed. Machine wash all the linens and blankets. Add ¼ cup (59 ml) of vinegar to the wash for extra odor-fighting power.[7] Air or tumble dry all the bedding.
I have had this for a couple years and have had nothing but problems with it since I got it! Bissell is cheaply priced for a reason! I swore their vacuums off long ago, I should of never caved and got a rug scrubber made by them. This thing has been nothing but a pain, it does not clean at all! when my carpets were damp they appeared clean, once fully dried all stains were still there! And I used their expensive cleaning solutions! Then the dirty water started mixing with the clean water no fix there unless you want to buy a new water tank/bladder I wasn’t looking to spend more money on a piece of junk . Then it stopped spraying – fixed that issue by watching YouTube videos, now it leaks water out from some where that I can’t figure out, during use, and then when I shut it off I get a huge amount coming out from behind a wheel and end up with a puddle on the floor! Do not waste your money on any Bissell product! I know I won’t ever do it again, I’ll stick with Hoover & Eureka!

Let’s face it: Most of us don’t give much thought to our pee before we flush it out of sight. But the basic details of your urine — color, smell, and how often you go — can give you a hint about what’s going on inside your body.
Try the vacuum method. Pour some cold water on the stain and immediately vacuum it up with a wet/dry vacuum. Repeat at least twice, or as many times as is necessary to remove the discoloration. Do not let the water sit; suck it up immediately (within seconds) of each application.
Just wanted to follow up with you about the clean smelling carpet in the stairway! …the carpet looks newer and is odor-free! Thank you… it has made a huge difference in the quality of life in the living room
As you age, your thirst mechanism tends to work less efficiently. Therefore, older adults will want to be sure to drink water regularly, in sufficient quantity to maintain pale yellow urine. As long as you aren’t taking riboflavin (vitamin B2, found in most multivitamins), which turns urine bright “fluorescent” yellow, then your urine should be quite pale. If you have kidney or bladder stones or a urinary tract infection, increase your water intake accordingly.

Urine is the body’s liquid waste. It is made by the kidneys, which filters toxins out of the blood. It contains water, salt, urea, and uric acid. Urea is expelled in the form of sweat through the body, while uric acid is the result of urine metabolism.
