We are trying to remove cat pee smell from a couple of rooms in a house – what would you suggest to use a general cleaner – for tile floors and wiping down furnitures items (that are not cloth or carpet)… Should I spray a solution on the lower part of the walls or if I kilz the walls would that help? My son kept a couple of cats for a family member and they sprayed everywhere – we are gutting the room but have to treat the tile floor and walls and some of the furniture that we want to keep… Thanks so much !

From sweet smelling pee that shrieks of uncontrolled diabetes to urine that smells strongly of ammonia due to urinary stones or musty due to liver trouble, the reasons for the change in the smell of your urine are numerous. At times, an unusual urine odor may also stem from underlying medical causes such as dehydration, UTIs, or maple syrup urine disease.
You could certainly try my method but I’m not sure how effective it would be after steam cleaning. However, the black light would definitely help in identifying an individual area you could treat and see how successful it was.
If you find that your pup is peeing a lot inside of the crate then there is very likely a medical problem. Some dogs – females especially – just have weak bladders, too. So that’s always a factor. That’s really hard to deal with, but sometimes medication from veterinarians can help.

Thanks justmesuzanne, but I haven’t found any odor problems after treating the area promptly with just vinegar and baking soda. Listerine is a good tip (apparently this product was first invented as a floor cleaner and only later became a mouthwash!!). I would definitely recommend checking that it has no effect on the color of the carpet by testing in an inconspicuous area first though.
Pregnant women have a higher risk than others for UTIs, which increases their chances of having ammonia-smelling urine. One report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds up to 8 percent of pregnant women experience UTIs.
All of this one-on-one time means that all of our furnishings are going to hold the distinct smell of dog, and even the most rabid of dog lovers amongst us may not want the whole house to smell of a dog that needs a good washing – not if we want to enjoy the company of human guests. So how do you get rid of that smelly dog smell? We’re happy to tell you that it’s relatively easy.
One important caution….These products can take the color out of cheap carpeting if left soaking wet to dry. Test in a closet first. If your carpets lose color than you can still pour on but must blot off, this will still help but will not be as effective as leaving it on.
Instead of purchasing expenses products, save your money and make yourself up a solution of rug cleaner in a spray bottle consisting of white vinegar and water (equal parts), dish washing liquid (a few drops). Have on hand hydrogen peroxide 3% – you can put on full strength as it’s already diluted. And some baking baking soda for later. You can also use SHOUT and Spray N Wash from your laundry room.
Avoid ammonia. High in alkaline, ammonia should never be used to clean pet stains. It will leave a sticky residue in the carpet and damage the carpet fibers, attracting dirt and other debris. It will also attract pets back to the same area, because ammonia contains the same uric acids and salts that are present in urine, making it all too tempting for your pet to remark the area. Never use ammonia on pet stains.
It’s also important to consider your dog’s motivations for peeing inside. Sometimes, inappropriate elimination is a sign of a medical issue. It can also indicate anxiety or emotional distress. If your dog is peeing indoors, start with a vet visit to rule out physical causes.
Products that use more traditional methods of cleaning with solvents (to dissolve stains) and surfactants (surface active agents that “wet” the carpet) may not be as effective and can actually deactivate enzymatic cleaners. Keep an eye on the ingredient panel for chlorine, ammonia and sodium lauryl sulfate, as these can be harmful to pets (and people, too). If the product’s instructions direct you to keep pets and children away from the product after it has been applied, you might want to think twice about using it in your home.
According to research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, urinary tract infections or UTIs are the most common bacterial infections worldwide, affecting up to 150 million people each year.
Clean the carpets. Spot cleaning stains will help remove smells from specific areas, but you may have a bunch of different smells over different areas of the carpet. Tackle smells all over the house with a thorough carpet cleaning. This might take time, but be patient. A smell-free house is worth the effort. You can either use a powder or wet shampoo to clean your carpets:
The first solution most people try is a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Mix a cup of white vinegar, two tablespoons of baking soda, and a cup of warm water then apply it to the stain while the whole mixture is still bubbling.
I wanted to take a minute to personally thank you for this pet urine odor remover solution. After many (failed) attempts at removing my dog’s pee odor from the carpet, with other pet products, I can honestly say that your method has become my go-to solution. Read all Testimonials
Well, after the black light arrived, we went around the house and found white patches showing up EVERYWHERE! I read that the bright white can be from left-over carpet cleaners, that urine should be dull and yellowish. Anyhow, in our case, the black light did not help us identify urine spots, because most of the white spots did not smell like urine, and there was so much “white” that we cannot tell “yellow”. We gave up the idea of “spot-cleaning” except for one spot that I definitely smelled urine.
I have a dog door in my house. Although my dogs use it regularly, one of my dogs is afraid to go out when it is raining heavily, and has peed on the carpet a few times at night without my knowledge. I didn’t know about it until it had dried. Please don’t judge. Nobody wants their pet to pee in the house. It’s so frustrating and embarrassing.
I use SCOE 10X which I can only buy online. Unlike others, it is probiotic based. Nothing else worked for dog urine odor. Be sure to soak thoroughly and then rinse thoroughly with a wet-dry vacuum and water, or it may pick up soil later. Normally this does not happen, it just depends on how much I have to use.
Your recommendation is good. Remember, you may want to soak up the residual moisture with baking soda. Cover it with a paper towel and place a heavy book on top and let it sit overnight. Remove paper towel the next day and see if the baking soda is yellow or white. If white, let it air dry until it can be vacuumed up. If yellow, repeat the process.
The only possible case when you can use the iodine to remove the urine smell is the case when you have a dark carpet. Prepare weak solution of the iodine (15 drops of iodine should be diluted in 1 liter of water). The diluted iodine is applied on the spot for 5-7 minutes. After that you should rinse the carpet with the textile soaked in warm water.
Step 1: Create a vinegar cleaning solution consisting of one part white vinegar to one part water. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia smell of urine without fading carpet fibers, making it a good choice for cleaning and protecting your carpet.
Then pour on Natures Miracle or The Simple Solution. (commercial products that can be purchased in most pet stores). Here is the trick, you must cover more than double the stained area when you pour on the product to ensure it soaks into the padding. Then walk away and allow to soak in and dry.
Most enzymatic cleaners need to be kept on a wet area for several hours. However, some might use a different process, so be sure to read the instructions on the label. If you’re cleaning wool carpet, make sure the cleaner is wool-safe.
Thoroughly blot up as much of whatever it is you’re cleaning up. I can’t emphasize the importance of this step enough. Fold up a rag over it, place a heavy book on it, and stand on the book to make sure you really get it all out (sounds extreme, but it does a good job!) Mix 2 cups of white distilled vinegar with 2 cups of lukewarm water in a large bowl.

Now, the one area where some people will have issues with this unit is that it isn’t the strongest in construction. It’s fine for the use of most people, but if you’re prone to hitting the fireplace or running it into things… well, you’re going to have a broken machine quickly.
Bubba’s knows that our pets sometimes get in trouble, you know? And they’ve made this cleaner specifically to help you out when that stain and odor hits the floor. It’s even supposed to work with that worst of smells… cat urine.
While it’s not a standalone product, if you’ve invested in a carpet cleaner then you’re going to be quite happy with Bissell 2X Pet Stain & Odor remover. It’s also a lot cheaper than most standalone options.
Several vacuum brands sell smaller versions of wet-vacs for home use that retail between $150 and $200. These handy machines spray, brush and remove stains on their own and sell a version of their concentrated cleaner that’s formulated specifically to treat pet stains.

If you’re working with tile or white carpet, then you might want to try a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Try mixing a cup of baking soda, a half cup of 2% hydrogen peroxide, and a dash of dish soap.
As you age, your thirst mechanism tends to work less efficiently. Therefore, older adults will want to be sure to drink water regularly, in sufficient quantity to maintain pale yellow urine. As long as you aren’t taking riboflavin (vitamin B2, found in most multivitamins), which turns urine bright “fluorescent” yellow, then your urine should be quite pale. If you have kidney or bladder stones or a urinary tract infection, increase your water intake accordingly.
UTIs tend to affect women and girls more, but men and boys can also develop UTIs. These infections are the result of bacteria entering the urinary tract. The bacteria make urine smell unpleasant and cause it to be cloudy or bloody.
Uncontrolled diabetes is known to cause your urine to have a sweet or fruity or, less commonly, a yeasty smell. In the past, doctors diagnosed diabetes by pouring urine into sand to see if it was sweet enough to attract bugs. Other physicians just dipped a finger in and took a taste. Fortunately, today’s physicians have access to far more elegant diagnostic tools.
If pet accidents are a regular part of your life, invest in an at-home carpet cleaning machine like the Bissell Spotbot. The sooner you clean up the urine, the easier it will be to get that stubborn dog pee smell out.

Nature’s Miracle, which can be bought at most large pet stores—at some in gallon containers with a battery-operated sprayer, although that’s not necessary. We have lived with cats for decades, and this is the only material that is always successful in removing odors. We have not had real problems with our cats, but all you need is one to make a house smell terrible. Nature’s Miracle also works well in the washing machine—just add a bit in the pre-rinse.
Have your pet checked by a veterinarian to rule out medical causes for the accident. When you are certain your pet is healthy, use positive reinforcement to train yourcat or dog to eliminate in the proper place.
There is also one trick which can helpful if you want to prevent repetition of the odor problem. If your dog is constantly peeing in the place you can sprinkle few drops of essential oil of apple, cinnamon or eucalyptus. This pleasant for human smell dogs do not like at all.
Purchase a repellent spray if your pet keeps urinating in the same area. There are a variety of sprays available for different types of pets, such as dogs and cats. Search for one that fits your household needs (such as being safe for use in houses with children) and won’t damage your particular type of carpet.
If the wood on your furniture, walls, baseboard or floor is discolored, the varnish or paint has reacted to the acid in the urine. You may need to remove and replace the layer of varnish or paint. If you do so, make sure the new product is safe for pets.
I’ve used the vinegar/water cleaner, followed by hydrogen peroxide/baking soda procedure for the last several years. We have three labs, and had two cats (one of whom is no longer with us). The process worked well for stains AND odor. Actually, doing the carpet AGAIN as we speak!
Thankfully, there is an easy solution. With a carpet cleaner, you’re looking at the ability to quickly and easily manage the problem as well as any other stains which may have made their way into your home.
