After cleaning, fill a bowl with 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup white vinegar and go over the surface you just cleaned to disinfect the area. Once the area is completely clean, open the windows to let the clean air in.
Wash clothes. Throw the clothes in the washing machine with a regular dose of laundry detergent, 2-4 cups of white vinegar (depending on how large the load is), and a liberal scoop of baking soda. Use the smallest setting you can so you can really get the fabric agitating in the machine. The white vinegar deodorizes the urine, while the baking soda helps lift the urine out of the fabric. Wash on hot.
Carl, I just bought a house and the carpet looks great but reaks of cat urine, I do not see where the cat peed. Can I saturate entire floor and tha will take care of it? Also is it safe or do I need to wear mask or something, just want to make sure it’s safe.
what works for me….I have a a hoover steamvac carpet cleaner …so worth it… I soak up original area …poor vinegar solution over allow to sit then do the whole rugs with the cleaner and the solution you buy to go over it. Then I fill it with the vinegar mixture then add 100 percent pure essential oils (lemongrass, tea-tree,bergamot maybe 10 drops per gallon of each or just until im satisfied with smell) then i do the rugs with that mixture…the oils are antimicrobial, antibacterial,anti-fungal and anti viral…oh the antiseptic qualities among other things!!…it smells great..i will be adding the baking soda Thanks guys
How do you apply the enzyme treatment in conjunction with the water/vinegar or peroxide, or do you not? Do you dilute the mixture after three months before applying the enzymes? How do you best recommend applying the enzyme mixture? What about essential oils? Would you recommend applying essential oils to the water vinegar or peroxide mix?
If you just brought a new puppy home or have an older dog with a weak bladder, chances are you’ve cleaned up a urine accident or two. Even if you immediately clean up the stain, the pee still can leave an undesirable odor. Because of dogs’ strong senses o
Gather the ingredients to make a homemade cleaner. While enzymatic cleaners are ideal, you can substitute a homemade cleaner that uses white vinegar, baking soda, liquid dish detergent, and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Vinegar helps to kill any bacteria and neutralize the odor.[14]
Uric acid, the stuff that causes the odor, is not water soluble and will not respond to water-based cleanup methods. An enzymatic cleaner breaks down the uric acid and removes the smell. Soak the soiled area with the enzymatic cleaner — as deep into the cushions as the urine did. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
It shouldn’t- the kind you get at the stores is usually 3% dilute. Professional carpet cleaners usually use it at around 10%. Just make sure to always test for color fastness no matter what you decide to try 🙂
Nature’s Miracle, which can be bought at most large pet stores—at some in gallon containers with a battery-operated sprayer, although that’s not necessary. We have lived with cats for decades, and this is the only material that is always successful in removing odors. We have not had real problems with our cats, but all you need is one to make a house smell terrible. Nature’s Miracle also works well in the washing machine—just add a bit in the pre-rinse.

Soak up as much of the urine as possible: Place a thick layer of paper towels on the wet spot, and cover that with a thick layer of newspaper. If possible, put newspaper under the soiled area as well. Stand on this padding for about a minute, and repeat until the area is barely damp.
Clean the cage. If you have rats, mice, gerbils, ferrets, rabbits, and other pets that live in cages with bedding, the cage could be making your whole house stink. Gently remove your pet and place the pet somewhere safe, such as a second cage. Then, get to cleaning:

For odors in your refrigerator, it may be as simple as going through the contents and removing old and smelly foods. That being said – if the old or expired food items or spills haven’t been cleaned up and have been in the fridge for a long period of time – you may need to everything out and give it a good cleaning.
I hope this vinegar method will work on days old cat urine on carpet. I couldn’t figure out exactly where the smell was coming from at first and finally discovered a couple spots in the closet! I don’t even know which cat’s been doing this, or why, after all these years.

Unhappy reviewers say that this product makes the urine stains smell worse than before, but this only happened with very few customers. As with any carpet spray, be sure to spot test a section of your carpet, as some pet owners have had a bad experience with discoloration.
To clean the compounds that are not water-soluble, use enzyme cleaners which are the most powerful substance in term of cleaning cat urine. They are meant to destroy the uric acid into ammonia and carbon dioxide. You will notice that it will off gas afterward.
Most importantly, you’ll want to avoid any cleaning products that contain ammonia. “Ammonia is one component of cat urine, and if cats smell that they’re more likely to go there,” Kornreich said. In addition, ammonia and other chemical cleaners can often set the stain—the opposite of what you’re trying to do.
We have experienced dog urine stains and odor in carpets and have found most commercial cleaners are ineffective. In addition, most carpet cleaning companies are unable to remove the odor. We had one company that had to clean and treat the flooring under the carpet in order to eliminate the odor under the carpet. We are trying the vinegar solution as a last resort for an area rug that the carpet cleaning company was unsuccessful at deodorizing.
Before we get to the nitty gritty of how to remove cat urine from clothing, rugs, and fabrics, it’s important to remember that most of these accidents are preventable. The reasons are many that a cat may choose to urinate outside of her litter box. Sometimes it’s innocent – something random to us but instinctual to her inspired her fancy, while other motivations may be more serious, like an unchecked medical condition that requires attention. Whatever the reason, here are a few tips to prevent your little buddy from creating any more havoc:
