Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake, which can irritate the lining of your bladder. Make sure your diet has plenty of magnesium, and avoid sugar (including fructose and soda) and non-fermented soy products due to their oxalate content. Finally, don’t hold it. As soon as you feel the urge to go, go! Delaying urination is detrimental to the health of your bladder due to overdistension.
Bladder stones may occur as a result of concentrated urine forming crystals and usually occur only in men. The urine is also very dark and may sometimes be accompanied by some blood.3 Kidney stones can result in a constant need to pee, ability to only urinate a little at a time, pain while urinating, and possibly even blood in the urine.4
I have tried everything to house train my puppy and nothing is working he has peed on my carpet and the smell of ammonia is making me sick! I bought a shampooer and have tried everything to get out the smell even vineger and baking soda the smell is still here ,please someone help!
If you often feel that you suddenly “gotta go” and sometimes can’t get to the bathroom in time, you may have overactive bladder. It’s a common condition for older men and women, though it’s not a normal part of aging. Your doctor can tell you how to treat it with lifestyle changes and medications.
Urine that contains a lot of water and few waste products has little to no odor. If urine becomes highly concentrated — a high level of waste products with little water — your urine may have a strong ammonia odor.
How to get dog urine smell out of carpet from my experience. We have Resolve for pet stains and odors. We were with our dog when she had her accident inside so we were able to act fast. We blotted the area with a rag to try and pick up as much urine as possible, then sprayed the area and let it set in for a while. Then scrubbed really well and we haven’t noticed a smell or any stain.
Use the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap method. Start by dusting the stain with a thin coat of baking soda, then mix up about a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Mix gently to combine. Then, saturate the baking soda and the stain thoroughly. Use an old toothbrush or your fingers to massage the mixture gently into the carpet, then let the mixture sit until it dries. Vacuum up the mess and clean it again with cool water.

Considering a carpet cleaner? Check out our full carpet cleaner ratings and read “5 Things to Know Before Buying a Carpet Cleaner.” Here are five picks from our tests, as well as two you may want to skip.
Orange Typically a sign of dehydration, showing up earlier than thirst; “holding your bladder” for too long; post-exercise; consuming orange foods (carrots, squash, or food dyes); the drug Pyridium (phenazopyridine); liver or pituitary problem (ADH, or antidiuretic hormone) Drink more water and don’t delay urination; consult physician if orange urine persists despite adequate hydration
For many pet owners, urine is the enemy, the smell just never comes out! Even though it’s messy, I would almost rather have my dogs have diarrhea in the house than pee on the floor. The stink of urine lingers and just will NOT go away. Diarrhea is awful, but a good scrubbing later, I can pretend it never happened.
For more stubborn stains and aromas, there are several green enzymatic cleaners you can find to spray on your carpet or, if you have older stains to tackle, consider renting a carpet-cleaning machine from a local store. Rinse the tank out well before use and don’t use the chemical-heavy cleanser that’s often sold with the rental. Instead, Bond recommends using a natural cleaner or a combination of white vinegar and water.

We have a Parrot in a cage on a big rubber mat. Carpet side face down on extra carpet for protection of regular carpet. We have two cats and a dog. We suspect the male cat is peeing on the mat by one of the wheels where the birds extra food falls. He has peed in certain areas of the house and on funiture before this due to a UTI. For which he had surgery for. Will any of these solutions help get rid of the ammonia odor like it does for carpeting? Any help will be appreciated.
Act quickly! If you can get to the wee whilst it is still wet, the job is so much easier. If you can remove the majority of the urine right away, bacteria do not get a hold and it is the bacteria which cause the worst of the smell, not the urine itself.
I completely forgot that you can use a UV light to find stains in the carpet. My husband and I have noticed that our living room smells like our dog, so we are working on getting it cleaned up. I could use the light to spot clean, but I think it would be better to shampoo the entire room. Thanks for your advice about what products to try! http://www.prosteamplus.ca/cleaning_services.html
Also, not a “defect” but something you need to know if you’re like me and tend to lift up the handle to pick up the whole machine (like you would w/ a vacuum cleaner) to lift it over the power cord, when I lifted the handle on this carpet cleaner the water container lunged out from the machine! It seems that this is quick release mechanism! Good to know, at least the water tank didn’t have very much in it so nothing spilled, whew, that was exciting, and not in a good way!
Step 4: Once the carpet is almost dry — which could be several hours later — sprinkle a little baking soda on the area to absorb the odor. Allow the baking soda to settle into the carpet fibers for about 15 minutes, then vacuum the area.
I have very, very lightly sprinkled baking soda over the entire house without working the powder into the fibers, and vacuumed it the next day. The smell has improved some but when I get down on the floor I still smell it. I don’t know how long the urine has been there.
Some foods and medications, such as asparagus or certain vitamins, can cause a noticeable urine odor, even in low concentrations. Sometimes, unusual urine odor indicates a medical condition or disease, such as:
Urinary frequency is also important. Peeing six to eight times per day is “average.” You might go more or less often than that, depending on how much water you drink and how active you are. Increased frequency can be caused by an overactive bladder (involuntary contractions), caffeine, a urinary tract infection (UTI), interstitial cystitis, benign prostate enlargement, diabetes, or one of a handful of neurological diseases.9
We have experienced dog urine stains and odor in carpets and have found most commercial cleaners are ineffective. In addition, most carpet cleaning companies are unable to remove the odor. We had one company that had to clean and treat the flooring under the carpet in order to eliminate the odor under the carpet. We are trying the vinegar solution as a last resort for an area rug that the carpet cleaning company was unsuccessful at deodorizing.
One important caution….These products can take the color out of cheap carpeting if left soaking wet to dry. Test in a closet first. If your carpets lose color than you can still pour on but must blot off, this will still help but will not be as effective as leaving it on.
Yes! Thank you for saying that! Real (raw) food is the only way they should eat. I feed my German Shepherd Dog raw meaty bone, raw meat and raw organs. It upsets me knowing animals are forced to eat commercial food with diseased and euthenized animals in the ingredients. (Of course it’s not listed but it’s in there)
Give your pet a bath. Pets love to play, which often means getting into messes. Regular bathing is a good idea for dogs and ferrets, and some other pets could use a wash now and then as well. Get your pet (and their favorite bath toy, if they have one) into a bathtub, wash basin, or bucket. Use a hose or bucket to wet your pet’s fur. Apply pet shampoo to the fur and lather it in with your hands until it’s nice and soapy. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of shampoo, and towel dry their fur. They should smell great, and look great as a bonus.
(Explanation. Dish Soap or Dishwashing Detergent? Different countries call it different names. It is what you use to wash dishes in your sink. For example, Dawn, Palmolive, Fairy etc. Do not use Detergent that you put in your dishwasher)
After you have used the blotting treatment above to deal with wet stains or the blacklight gadget above to locate those ‘invisible; dry stains, it is time to tackle the odor! I like to keep a spray bottle handy containing a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water.
I recently acquired two dogs. My worries about having the dogs was the mess they would leave on my carpet. I purchased many carpet cleaning formulas but they did nothing but temporarily covered the stain. Once the formula dried, the stains would reappear. I decided that the only way I could get rid of the stains would be to get rid of the dogs (which I have already grown attached to….so this was not an option), replace the carpet (too costly and not at all practical), or invest in a carpet steam cleaner. I borrowed a friend’s Bissell steam cleaner and it did wonders. It was a different model but it worked well. I knew I wanted to stay within the Bissell family of products. So I researched the different Bissell machines and saw that the reviews for this machine were great. It was affordable, which was very important to me as a single homeowner. I purchased the product and it did wonders for my carpet. I am so happy that I invested in this machine. I would definitely recommend it to others.
