In your lifetime, your kidneys filter more than one million gallons of water, enough to fill a small lake. Amazingly, one kidney can handle the task perfectly well. In fact, if you lose a kidney, your remaining kidney can increase in size by 50 percent within two months, to take over the job of both.3
you said that you are treating your dog with Crananidin and Cosequin every other day. And that “Nutramax pharm. makes the products. Is this a mail order pharm. And did your vet come up with this solution on taking this or did you research on the internet.
But at just over 5 feet, the hose is average-length. This model might fit the bill if you have a smaller space in a one-story house; it can cover only 15 square feet on one full tank of solution. (Some machines cover twice that area.) But you’ll end up with a carpet that dries easily because this Bissell scores an Excellent on our dryness test.
Wash your bed. Snuggling with your pet in bed can be blissful. However, it’s important to wash your bed often and well, since it will likely be harboring pet odors too. Strip pillow cases, sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers, and blankets from the bed. Machine wash all the linens and blankets. Add ¼ cup (59 ml) of vinegar to the wash for extra odor-fighting power.[7] Air or tumble dry all the bedding.
Blue or green: These hues are probably due to dyes in your food or meds you’ve taken, like the anesthetic propofol or the allergy/asthma medicine promethazine. A few rare medical conditions can also turn pee green or blue, so let your doctor know if the color doesn’t go away after a short time.
Full sized cleaners can be something of a bear to handle. This makes them less ideal for those who aren’t quite as physically fit and also makes them harder to use in particularly tight environments. For a small apartment, inhabited by a smaller person, it doesn’t make sense and instead, you’ll want to focus on more pet oriented applications.
Replace the litter. Understandably, litter boxes can get pretty smelly. To clean your box, empty its contents into a plastic garbage bag, then scrub the litter box with soap and water. To remove stains and smells that put up a fight, pour some vinegar into the box and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Then, scrub the box with a brush, rinse it out, and let it air dry.
The market is filled with commercial pet stain removers, deodorizers and air fresheners to help remove urine stains from the carpet. Turn to these products if using vinegar and baking soda fails to remove the urine smell from your home.
Slowly pour your solution onto the site and gently scrub with paper towels or a soft brush. Let sit for 15 minutes, then dust with baking soda. When it’s dry, vacuum. You might need to do this a few times for tough stains or especially strong odors.
I have tried the Baking soda and Vinegar mixture, because the smell was horrid…. I let it dry several hours and i can still smell the urine…. Is there anything else i can do? i need a shampooer but do not have one at the moment… Please Help!
3. The “hair trap” (a small red square “tray”) doesn’t work so well. Is it a big deal? I don’t know. It may be for some. It is a hassle to have to scoop hairs off the top of the bladder when you are going to reuse it right away rather than just emptying the little trap. Does it affect performance? It hasn’t so far that I know of. I know that it is more hassle to clean the tank with loose hair in the tank and stuck to the bladder. You have to watch it going down your drain so you aren’t dumping pet hair and carpet fuzzies down the drain. It just means that I have to lift the bladder that holds the soap/clean water and shift it when I rinse when I am cleaning it to put it away. I don’t know if that means it gets into any part of the machine’s motor or not though. Someone more technical than me can possibly answer that question.
If ammonia-smelling urine occurs every once in a while, it is rarely a reason for concern. However, if ammonia odor is accompanied by pain or symptoms of infection, including fever, it is time to see a doctor.
Some cleaning products work better than others depending on the type of carpet you have, such as natural versus synthetic fibers. Read the label on these products to find the one that can best remove dog or pet urine odor from carpet.
I have a dog door in my house. Although my dogs use it regularly, one of my dogs is afraid to go out when it is raining heavily, and has peed on the carpet a few times at night without my knowledge. I didn’t know about it until it had dried. Please don’t judge. Nobody wants their pet to pee in the house. It’s so frustrating and embarrassing.
Internally deodorizing incontinence products like Derifil and Nullo will help neutralize the smell of urine. Vitamin C tablets also are great at deodorizing urine, but can interact with other medications or therapies you are using. Check with your doctor before taking vitamin C tablets. And don’t substitute citrus fruits or juices for the tablets, as they can cause bladder irritation and odor in the urine.
I have very, very lightly sprinkled baking soda over the entire house without working the powder into the fibers, and vacuumed it the next day. The smell has improved some but when I get down on the floor I still smell it. I don’t know how long the urine has been there.
If your cat urinates outside the box and has no health issues that are causing it then it has territorial issues. Make an area the “cat’s area” and don’t allow other pets to relax or hang out in “her special area”. She is marking a lot to mark it as hers, she feels she has no space of her own. Trust me, I’ve had cats for almost 50 years and I did not think the territory idea would work but it did. I saw it on Cat Whisperer show.

Freshen the air. Whether your house is plagued with pet odors or not, air fresheners can always sweeten your home’s scent. Pick a commercial freshener, or make your own. Either way, you’ll have a ton of options, from warm vanilla to fresh citrus. When you opt for commercial sprays, gels, or plug-ins, make sure they’re specially formulated to be safe for pets.[13] Spray it around the house to freshen the air.
My dog took a long time to potty train – almost 9 months! I took her to training school, but you could consider bringing a dog trainer into your home to provide individualized attention and training. Also, if you’re not dealing well with chemical carpet cleaners, you could consider a natural-based product. But it’s always recommended to test a carpet cleaning product on an area that’s not visible to make sure it works with your carpet and doesn’t discolor or damage it. Good luck!
If you’re a woman from ancient Rome and your urine smells like roses, you’ve probably been drinking turpentine. This is a high price to pay to woo your suitor with pleasant-smelling pee, as turpentine may kill you! Short of drinking turpentine, there are many common substances that may alter the way your urine smells, which is why it’s helpful to know what’s normal. Urine reflects all of the inner workings of your body and contains a wide variety of compounds and metabolic by-products. Some dogs can actually “smell cancer” in human urine6.
Find old stains. You might have a general idea of where old stains might be from the odor. If you think there might be old stains in an area, explore using a sweeping motion, gradually moving farther away from the generally smelly location. The pet urine that you’re looking for should show up as a yellow or greenish color. Try looking in the following areas:
Vacuum up any loose debris from the area that will be treated. Wet the area to be treated with clean, warm water. Using your vacuum or carpet extractor wet extraction capabilities, clean the are 2-3 times, leaving the area damp. Pour OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator on the treatment area. Spread the OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator on the treatment area. Spread the OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator into the area working it deeply into the carpet or covering surface completely.
It can be used in conjunction with a carpet cleaning machine, but we suggest direct application of the product to the carpet, then use the carpet cleaning machine to extract it from the carpet. This allows for better and longer contact time between the source and the OdorKlenz product.

Next, gather your deodorizing supplies to work on removing pet odor from carpets, furniture, and beds. It’s simple; all you need is a big box or two of baking soda and a bottle of apple cider vinegar. Wash all of your linens, blankets and cushion covers in a mix of oxy powered laundry detergent and a ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar. There are also pet odor removers available at pet supply stores, but generally speaking, they are not much more effective than the home remedies.
Products that use more traditional methods of cleaning with solvents (to dissolve stains) and surfactants (surface active agents that “wet” the carpet) may not be as effective and can actually deactivate enzymatic cleaners. Keep an eye on the ingredient panel for chlorine, ammonia and sodium lauryl sulfate, as these can be harmful to pets (and people, too). If the product’s instructions direct you to keep pets and children away from the product after it has been applied, you might want to think twice about using it in your home.
Isopropyl alcohol, better known as rubbing alcohol, is an effective disinfectant and has antibacterial properties. Its powerful scent is not agreeable for canines. Dilute rubbing alcohol using one part alcohol and one part water and spray it on your carpets. Reapply the mixture weekly or after each cleaning of the carpets.
Good information! After you have done all these things, spray the area with straight Listerine (or a knock-off). It will kill the odor, and dogs and cats don’t like the smell of the Listerine, so it will help prevent their returning to the scene of the crime. Voted up and useful! 🙂
CR’s take: This affordable Hoover is lightweight, inexpensive, and a good choice for those who have small carpets or area rugs. When empty, this model weighs only 12 pounds, and it weighs 20 pounds when full with a gallon of water, making it easy to move around the house. Notably, this model doesn’t come with a hose, so you might not be able to clean tight areas, such as stairs, as easily, and it doesn’t have an extra carrying handle. Overall, this Hoover is very good at cleaning your carpets and leaving them dry.
Thanks Dreamhowl, I hope Murdoch, my JRT is not embarrassed that his picture is being shared across the Internet, portraying him as a slightly incontinent elderly terrier! It will do his street cred no good at all!
Important. Never use ammonia or ammonia-based products on the carpet to remove pet pee. One of the ingredients of urine is ammonia and your dog or puppy may well be encouraged to re-offend in the same area if it detects the smell of ammonia. Many household cleaner cleaners contain ammonia so be sure to read the label.
Thoroughly blot up as much of whatever it is you’re cleaning up. I can’t emphasize the importance of this step enough. Fold up a rag over it, place a heavy book on it, and stand on the book to make sure you really get it all out (sounds extreme, but it does a good job!) Mix 2 cups of white distilled vinegar with 2 cups of lukewarm water in a large bowl.
Try the vacuum method. Pour some cold water on the stain and immediately vacuum it up with a wet/dry vacuum. Repeat at least twice, or as many times as is necessary to remove the discoloration. Do not let the water sit; suck it up immediately (within seconds) of each application.
NOTE: ** Several complained on here that the shampooer only comes with a “tiny” bottle of the solution. The free bottle that came with mine was a 24 ozs. bottle. It says on the bottle to use 4 capfuls of the solution per tank of water, but the instructions that came with the machine as well as the larger bottle of solution that I bought in anticipation of receiving a “tiny” bottle, say to only use one capful. The cap holds 2 ozs. of solution. That is all I have used in the machine so far and it seems to work perfectly. I would think that you would be able to get several uses out of the bottle at that rate before you have to purchase a new bottle, BUT that having been said, if you use the 4 capfuls as the bottle suggests, then you would only get 6 uses out of the one bottle. That having been said, if you are concerned you will run out before you finish carpets in your home, buy a bottle when you buy the machine or before it arrives. 🙂 ****

Clean or dispose of the towels. Because the towels you used for absorbing the urine will have faint traces of your pet’s scent, it’s important to keep your pet from marking them again. Help your pet avoid the temptation by discarding the towel.
Basically pink liquid is used usually but in case of long-standing stains of dog’s urine or very old stains we should prepare dark or almost black mixture of the potassium permanganate (we just add more of the crystals in the warm water).
Look, we all know that dog urine can be problematic. Even in the best of cases, when it’s noticed instantly, it has a tendency to seep into carpeting and sometimes under flooring. This leads to lasting odors in many cases, even where you’ve handled the stains super efficiently.
No matter how well-trained your furry pal is, accidents happen. You need to know how to clean dog urine from carpet. If at all possible, clean up urine as soon as it hits the floor and while it’s still wet. Once it dries, the odor will set into the carpet fibers. Place a towel or a couple of layers of paper towels on the spot to absorb the urine. Stand on the towel so it pushes into the carpet and absorbs as much urine as possible. Next, mix up a solution of 2 cups of vinegar, 2 cups of warm water and 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Put solution into a spray bottle and spritz on soiled area. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Blot with a soft cloth.  For heavier stains, sprinkle baking soda directly on the stain. Pour a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water on the area and let it sit for 5 minutes and blot up with a cloth.
CR’s take: At 105 inches long, the hose on this carpet cleaner makes the Hoover a good candidate for homes with carpeted stairs and other hard-to-reach spots. This model is slightly lighter than the Bissell ProHeat 2X Lift-Off Pet at 18 pounds empty and 27 pounds when full of solution. And at this price, it’s easier on your wallet, too. It scores Very Good at both cleaning and drying, and can cover up to 33 square feet of carpet on one tank of solution.
The only possible case when you can use the iodine to remove the urine smell is the case when you have a dark carpet. Prepare weak solution of the iodine (15 drops of iodine should be diluted in 1 liter of water). The diluted iodine is applied on the spot for 5-7 minutes. After that you should rinse the carpet with the textile soaked in warm water.
Avoid ammonia. High in alkaline, ammonia should never be used to clean pet stains. It will leave a sticky residue in the carpet and damage the carpet fibers, attracting dirt and other debris. It will also attract pets back to the same area, because ammonia contains the same uric acids and salts that are present in urine, making it all too tempting for your pet to remark the area. Never use ammonia on pet stains. [3]
On hardwood or laminate floors, use paper towels, an absorbent cloth, or a mop to sop up the pee. I love these reusable, super-absorbent cleaning cloths. Just throw them in the washing machine after use.
