I’ve been using the vinegar/water mix for years to rid the carpet of pet odors. It’s always worked well for me. I like the baking soda suggestion and if I get in a position where V/W doesn’t work, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestions Angie’s!
Yes. Baking soda is especially effective and part of many protocols for removing the urine smell. However, a single treatment may not do the trick if the urine has already dried in. You may need to repeat daily for two to three weeks.
Tammy, it sounds to me like you’re doing exactly the right thing. And yes, the cat may get upset, and maybe a little stressed (especially for the first couple days) but… too bad. She’ll get used to it. No one would blame you for this. Just make sure you put something soft in there for her to sleep on.
Maria, it might be worth it… Otherwise, if it hasn’t been recarpeted yet, I’d spray the heck out of it with Simple Solution. Just completely saturate it and hope it soaks far enough into the wood to get to the urine. Are there particular areas where it seems the cat/cats liked to go?
Society is becoming increasingly concerned with environmentally friendly living. It has become unacceptable to just throw everything away. Today’s modern home is often equipped with recycling bins for green waste which can be turned into great compost for the garden. » More
Enzymes are protein that help break up urine molecules and dissolve odors. Enzyme cleansers work, but they can take some time. You’ll spray or blot the area with cleaner, then let it sit for a while before blotting it up and scrubbing the spot. You may need to repeat this process.
Brittany, the vinegar, water, baking soda, peroxide and dish soap treatment works on mattresses! Thats what I do when my cat goes on my bed! If the spot is fresh and still wet, blot up as much of it as you can. Then pour 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water on the spot. Let sit a min then blot that up as much as you can. Then sprinkle a handful of baking soda over the Then drizzle a mixture of peroxide & dish soap over the baking soda. Let sit about 15 mins then use your fingers or a sponge/brush of some sort and work it into it. Then let set to dry (putting a fan facing it helps make drying process faster). Then use the hose of your vaccum to sweep it up when its dry! Stain and smell gone!

One of the nice things about this product is that it has Scotchguard built right into it, meaning that you get the cleaning and odor removal followed by a protective layer that will stay in place on the offending rug.
As with any product that you would put on your carpet, flooring or furniture, always test for color fastness. To test for color fastness, mix a small amount of the solution and place on a hidden area of your carpet. Wait 24 hours or until carpet is dry before proceeding to full treatment.
It does flare up my asthma WHILE I spray it, but only because I am kneeling over the area and spraying a lot of volume. If I spray less or simply walk away for a few minutes it is fine. No need for hours of ventilation like Odoban or other stronger products….literally just a few minutes.
At 5:00 this morning I found myself searching the net for ways to get rid of cat pee smell, after returning from a day out to find that SOME CAT (we have three, no names no pack drill) had peed twice in the bathroom. They have a flap and can come and go as they like; we only moved here two months ago and were not planning to touch the b’room until after the summer as there is so much else to do. The smell was simply horrendous and I couldn’t leave the window open until we were up as we live on a public footpath.
It does not discolor. You can safely use the product on majority of fabrics without risking discoloration. Harsh chemicals is what causes these issues, and those would be dangerous to dogs as well (thereby marking a product not pet-friendly).
My cat sprayed on my bed this morning and it went through my feather mattress top on the the actual bed mattress. I’m going to take my feather top to a laundry place to wash it there but my bed, how do I get the smell out a non toxic way because I have a 3 month old!

Others believe the most powerful weapon in the fight against odor elimination in carpets, couch cushions, mattresses and linens is an enzyme-based cleaner that can be found at local pet stores. The enzymes in these products actually break down the acid in cat urine, helping to get rid of the smell at the same time. These cleaners contain natural enzymes and helpful bacteria to get rid of the bad bacteria causing the unpleasant odors.
You can follow all this up with a a nice homey smell like oranges and cinnamon. Take two tablespoons of cinnamon and some orange peels and simmer them gently in 4 cups of water. This fresh scent will permeate throughout your house.
I really wanted this to be the answer to my search for a fantastic odor eliminator for doggie ooops. I wasn’t really blow away by it. I thought I wouldn’t mind mixing it and putting it in another container (as long as it was amazing) but it’s no where near as convenient and quick as the pre-mixed solution when disasters strike AND it wasn’t as effective either. Meh results plus the mixing–I’ll pass. The search continues.
