Your kidneys serve to filter excess water and water-soluble wastes out of your blood, getting rid of toxins and things that would otherwise build up and cause you to become ill. Many things — from excess protein and sugar to bacteria and yeast — may make their way into your urine.
According to research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, urinary tract infections or UTIs are the most common bacterial infections worldwide, affecting up to 150 million people each year.
CR’s take: This affordable Hoover is lightweight, inexpensive, and a good choice for those who have small carpets or area rugs. When empty, this model weighs only 12 pounds, and it weighs 20 pounds when full with a gallon of water, making it easy to move around the house. Notably, this model doesn’t come with a hose, so you might not be able to clean tight areas, such as stairs, as easily, and it doesn’t have an extra carrying handle. Overall, this Hoover is very good at cleaning your carpets and leaving them dry.

5. Put together at onset: It was easy. A monkey could do it. It comes with instructions and Costco Concierge would help me if I had called, as well as Bissell. Says so right on the instructions, but I didn’t need it. BUT (big but here) the holes weren’t lined up correctly on the hose wrap hook and so it required both my husband and I to put that part on. I used it before he came home from a trip by tying the hose up around the handle. 🙂
I have three Scotties. Cushing’s disease will cause a dog to pee a lot, drink a lot of water and you should check with your vet for diagnosis and medication. Currently have one that has it and previously had one that had it. Evidently it is fairly common in certain breeds. And urinary tract infections will also make doggies pee more frequently.

If some stubborn soda still remains after you vacuum once, spay a light mist of vinegar and water over it to re-wet the baking soda, and place a dry rag over the area for another hour or two until it dries again. Then vacuum a second time.
If the accident just happened quickly absorb it from the carpet with toilet paper…keep rolling up paper and stepping on it over the accident until it’s dry. Re wet the stain with febreeze and again lift it up with toilet paper. Then pour baking soda over the spot…let it dry overnight. You will see the urine comes up into the baking soda…why? I have no idea…when it’s dry..scrape it up ( I use the back of the dustpan brush) sweep it up into a dustpan and thoroughly vacuum. Voila..stink and stain gone. If it’s old..this will not work.
Ok I have a 7 year old female dog and she never urinated in the house but now is doing it and pooping too!! My dinning room area smells the urine, that’s her favorite spot. Will this ursine truly help get rid of smell and bigger question will it stop her from going back to those spots to pee?
Once the area is clean, make it unattractive and/or unavailable to your pet and the appropriate bathroom area attractive. As long as your pet can smell their personal scent, they will continue to return to the “accident zone.”

White vinegar is not only an effective carpet cleaner and urine odor remover, but it also acts as a repellant. Prepare a solution of white vinegar and water in a 1-to-1 concentration and spray it over your carpets and the areas where your dog likes to urinate. Dogs don’t like the smell of acetic acid and are likely to avoid the areas that are sprayed with this solution.

One of the universal means removing unpleasant odors is vinegar. It is basically suitable for removing both dog and cat urine. The big advantage of it is that smell of the vinegar evaporates very well. The best possible scenario is to react immediately as soon as you saw that your favorite cat or dog created a puddle on the carpet.

I recently acquired two dogs. My worries about having the dogs was the mess they would leave on my carpet. I purchased many carpet cleaning formulas but they did nothing but temporarily covered the stain. Once the formula dried, the stains would reappear. I decided that the only way I could get rid of the stains would be to get rid of the dogs (which I have already grown attached to….so this was not an option), replace the carpet (too costly and not at all practical), or invest in a carpet steam cleaner. I borrowed a friend’s Bissell steam cleaner and it did wonders. It was a different model but it worked well. I knew I wanted to stay within the Bissell family of products. So I researched the different Bissell machines and saw that the reviews for this machine were great. It was affordable, which was very important to me as a single homeowner. I purchased the product and it did wonders for my carpet. I am so happy that I invested in this machine. I would definitely recommend it to others.

1) You might discolor your carpet – baking soda & vinegar. Think about it. It’s a paste that can interact with the chemistry of the carpet. Don’t believe me? Start reading through the comments. There are some people who say it works, but do you want to be one of the readers who was left with ruined carpet?

Our dog is potty trained. But now, she is peeing in the hallway, dining room and master bedroom now. We’ve been using baby gates to keep her from going in that part of the house. But we’re getting frustrated with having to climb over baby gates now. What can we do or use to get her to stop peeing in these areas of our home?
There is also one trick which can helpful if you want to prevent repetition of the odor problem. If your dog is constantly peeing in the place you can sprinkle few drops of essential oil of apple, cinnamon or eucalyptus. This pleasant for human smell dogs do not like at all.
Find old stains. You might have a general idea of where old stains might be from the odor. If you think there might be old stains in an area, explore using a sweeping motion, gradually moving farther away from the generally smelly location. The pet urine that you’re looking for should show up as a yellow or greenish color. Try looking in the following areas:
Then pour on Natures Miracle or The Simple Solution. (commercial products that can be purchased in most pet stores). Here is the trick, you must cover more than double the stained area when you pour on the product to ensure it soaks into the padding. Then walk away and allow to soak in and dry.

Thanks justmesuzanne, but I haven’t found any odor problems after treating the area promptly with just vinegar and baking soda. Listerine is a good tip (apparently this product was first invented as a floor cleaner and only later became a mouthwash!!). I would definitely recommend checking that it has no effect on the color of the carpet by testing in an inconspicuous area first though.
Claire, thanks for the helpful recipes for these natural carpet cleaner/deserters. I just used the vinegar water baking soda concoction in my carpet cleaner and it worked really well. Keep email comin!

3) Install indoor/outdoor carpet. There are very nice indoor/outdoor carpets for very cheap. Less than a hundred dollars to do any room in your house and even if your animals are horrible, they don’t soak up smell like regular carpet.
People with incontinence tend to drink less liquid, causing their urine to become very concentrated and strong-smelling. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day will dilute your urine and reduce or eliminate its odor.
That has also helped tremendously in reducing the amounts of hairs being scratched off/shedding all the time and if you raise a puppy up with regular vacuuming, yes, you read it correctly VACUUMING (*With the brush attachment, on low, check it first on yourself and go around the ears, never on them!) they will absolutely love it as adults, especially on their tummies! They will come running when they hear you start up the vacuum as they think it’s time to be brushed!
I haven’t had an issue, but everyone’s floors are a little different, so I’d suggest trying a small inconspicuous area just to be sure 🙂 Honestly, if it’s a smooth, hard, surface, I usually just mop up and liquids/pick up any solids and then use vinegar with some essential oil in it to clean.
I have a female pitbull who is somewhat trained, and by that I mean she does well when I’m awake and goes to the restroom when I take her outside but during the night when I sleep she gets up without me noticing and uses the restroom on my carpet. She used to cry when she needed out but has recently stopped and left me with surprises in the morning. I’ve recently moved her to outside and I hate it because she is my sleeping buddy. What should I do?
I use SCOE 10X which I can only buy online. Unlike others, it is probiotic based. Nothing else worked for dog urine odor. Be sure to soak thoroughly and then rinse thoroughly with a wet-dry vacuum and water, or it may pick up soil later. Normally this does not happen, it just depends on how much I have to use.
With pets, pee happens, often happens on carpets. But there’s no need to panic. There are several methods of removing dog urine—and the distinctive odor it creates—from carpets without using chemicals that may be harmful to you or your pup.
My daughter had a cat that had pretty thoroughly repeatedly saturated one corner in her basement. What worked for her was a strong (natural) solution of Melaleuca’s Solumel mixed with Melaleuca’s Tough and Tender and did this a two to three times which took out all stain AND odor. Cat urine is a tough one, so I’d try this if I were you!
I have a 25 yr old satillo tile with concrete grout floor. I have always had a variety of animals in my home and for some reason this has been the place where the accidents happen. I have tried all kinds of things that appear to work but then the smell comes back. Especially in the damp winter time. I have a 23 yr old macaw that does have some respiratory deficiency in the house so I can’t use anything that will harm him.
CR’s take: For carpet cleaners, this is where it gets tricky: Both of the higher-performing Bissell models on this list have “pet” in their names. This one does, too, but that’s where the similarity ends. Unlike the two Bissells covered above, the Deep Clean Deluxe Pet is only so-so at cleaning and worse than that at leaving a dry carpet behind, scoring a Poor. It’s also several pounds heavier when full of solution—36 pounds, so it can be a bit unwieldy. The ironic part? It costs more than our two top Bissell picks, proving that the price-quality relationship doesn’t always bear out.
Cover the stain with paper towels or rags and walk lightly over or place something heavy on top to soak up any excess liquid. Sprinkle a generous handful of baking soda over the stain when no more liquid can be pulled up, and mix together ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish liquid. Slowly pour the solution over the stain and baking soda. Gently scrub the mixture into the carpet fibers with a scrub-brush or cloth, and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Vacuum the area thoroughly. For tough stains, repeat the above steps.
Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake, which can irritate the lining of your bladder. Make sure your diet has plenty of magnesium, and avoid sugar (including fructose and soda) and non-fermented soy products due to their oxalate content. Finally, don’t hold it. As soon as you feel the urge to go, go! Delaying urination is detrimental to the health of your bladder due to overdistension.
No need to worry about staining either, this product breaks down the stains which can emerge from urine in a natural way. This allows things to get settled out and leave you with a clean floor that only has the cleaner’s scent to it.
UTIs tend to affect women and girls more, but men and boys can also develop UTIs. These infections are the result of bacteria entering the urinary tract. The bacteria make urine smell unpleasant and cause it to be cloudy or bloody.
