Cats add so much joy to our lives, but the stains and odors that come with being a cat parent often bring frustration. Fortunately, making your own pet stain remover from simple ingredients can help you keep your house clean and fresh. DIY stain removers are safe to use around your pets (and usually cost less to make than store-bought cleaners). From urine to hairball to vomit stains, homemade cleaners can effectively remove the stain and the odor that sometimes lingers.

Ah how I can relate to this scenario! After almost 30 foster dogs coming through my house (most not housebroken to start with) I know the battle with lingering odor well-and the frustration of having the dog go outside only to come in and find a blanket or rug to go on. And that feeling of never having your house clean! If none of the above cleaners work for you, you can always try a commercial product (of course natural is best!)-if you go that route I would recommend Biokleen Bac-out. My doggy has had frequent accidents since we got her. I feel your pain! Instead of caging her at night, I started training her to sleep with me. I just put her leash around my ankle. I realized quickly that she wouldn’t tinkle on the bed, couch, or anytime she is leashed to me. My vet suggested this and it’s done wonders for my furry baby!!
Take a brush to upholstered furniture like couches. Fill a bucket with warm water and several drops of liquid dish soap. Swirl the water to create suds. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the suds and brush the entire surface of the furniture. Wipe with a barely damp cloth and air dry.
Most cleaners and odor removers work their best if you attack the problem as soon as it happens. The quicker you get to the disaster the better off you’ll be. Enzymatic solutions are particularly useful this way since fresher material will find the material more “palatable” in the immediate aftermath.
Blot the urine on your carpet with paper towels. Try to remove as much of the urine as possible. This will ultimately make your job easier. Use clean paper towels and apply pressure. Repeat with new paper towels until you are unable to soak up any more urine.[1]
Consider steam-cleaning the carpet. If the enzymatic cleaner didn’t remove the stain completely, consider renting a steam cleaner or hiring a professional to do the job for you. Make sure to ask if they have a product to add into their solution designed for pet stains. Stains are a lot easier to remove when they’re fresh, so try to decide quickly if this is what you need to do.

Various illnesses can be accompanied by inappropriate urination, so it’s important to closely monitor your cat when they exhibit any sudden change in behavior. Cats with urinary tract disease often associate the litter box with pain and start avoiding it. If your cat is also showing symptoms like blood in the urine, excessive licking of the genitals, crying in the litter box, or straining to urinate, they are likely suffering from a urinary tract disease and should be treated immediately.
