Cover the stain with paper towels or rags and walk lightly over or place something heavy on top to soak up any excess liquid. Sprinkle a generous handful of baking soda over the stain when no more liquid can be pulled up, and mix together ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish liquid. Slowly pour the solution over the stain and baking soda. Gently scrub the mixture into the carpet fibers with a scrub-brush or cloth, and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Vacuum the area thoroughly. For tough stains, repeat the above steps.
Use the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap method. Start by dusting the stain with a thin coat of baking soda, then mix up about a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle. Mix gently to combine. Then, saturate the baking soda and the stain thoroughly. Use an old toothbrush or your fingers to massage the mixture gently into the carpet, then let the mixture sit until it dries. Vacuum up the mess and clean it again with cool water.[2]
Most enzymatic cleaners need to be kept on a wet area for several hours. However, some might use a different process, so be sure to read the instructions on the label. If you’re cleaning wool carpet, make sure the cleaner is wool-safe.
Bought the Bissell ProHeat carpet cleaner to clean my dining room carpet. We got a new dog and he seemed to think that if you don’t get outside when nature calls that my dining room was the next best alternative. UGH! After one accident the odor stayed no matter what I used to get rid of it and from then on our dining room became “the bathroom”. The cleaner came with a pretreat spray bottle and a starter bottle of the pet order killer cleanser. It worked fantastic! Cleaner was a breeze to put together (4 screws), directions quite simple, and I never realized how dirty the whole carpet in that room actually was. I’m thrilled with the results and we have not had one accident since I cleaned that carpet 2 weeks ago. (Which tells me that the heated deep cleaning worked to get out all the odor.) Love it!! The unit comes with attachments for furniture and doggy accidents if you just want to clean up one spot. Our living room couch, office and master bedroom carpets will be looking good shortly.
If your home has pet odor problems, you’re in for one of the toughest odor removal projects known to man. That doesn’t mean you should give up hope. It just means that depending on the nature of the odor, and the material, this isn’t going to be an easy task.
Wash toys, bedding, and accessories regularly. Pet smells build up over time, so it’s important to stay on top of cleaning and washing. Wash your pet’s bed, fabric toys, leashes, and collars in the washing machine every month. Wash hard toys every month in the sink with soap and water. Water bowls need more frequent attention–wash these with soap and water every week.[16]
In your lifetime, your kidneys filter more than one million gallons of water, enough to fill a small lake. Amazingly, one kidney can handle the task perfectly well. In fact, if you lose a kidney, your remaining kidney can increase in size by 50 percent within two months, to take over the job of both.3
The difference between them lies in the functions. The DeepClean Premier lacks the stain trapper tools and the Cleanshot trigger technology of the Deluxe, which means that the Deluxe version handles the toughest pet stains better than the Premier version.
Using small piece of soap and a bit of water make a cleaning soapy liquid. The resulting soapy liquid is applied on the smelling surface. Wait for approximately 10 minutes. With the wet sponge remove the remaining soap and wash the spot.

Our dog is potty trained. But now, she is peeing in the hallway, dining room and master bedroom now. We’ve been using baby gates to keep her from going in that part of the house. But we’re getting frustrated with having to climb over baby gates now. What can we do or use to get her to stop peeing in these areas of our home?
The Bissell DeepClean Deluxe Pet is a very effective deep cleaner that is focused on taking care of pet stains and odours. It has a hair basket, which will trap the pet hair, so that you do not have to remove it yourself in the machine.
The best method to to remove the dog urine is to use a wet/dry vacuum. If you don’t own one an alternative method is to place several layers of paper towel over the wet urine area and tread on it so as to soak up as much of the dog urine as you possibly can. You may have to repeat this several times until no more dog urine can be soaked up.
The ONLY thing that helps the smell of dried urine is to SEAL the subfloor with a shellac or polyurethane and then proceed to either put new carpet, or in my case….ceramic tile down., Nothing will totally get the smell of urine out of a carpet or a subfloor other than throwing it away or sealing it up. You can use products that will MASK it temporarily but don’t expect it to disappear.
Bubba’s calls their enzyme cleaner “the pet stain and odor TERMINATOR” because it destroys stubborn urine smells for good. It eats away urine bacteria to prevent re-marking. You can spot-treat with Bubba’s, or add it to a load of laundry to wash dog bets and blankets stained with pee.
Add a one-pound box of baking soda to your regular detergent and wash as usual, air-drying if possible. If you can still see or smell the soiling, wash again with an enzymatic cleaner — these break down pet-waste odors.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. I spent my whole weekend cleaning my family room carpet with a carpet cleaning machine, about 3-4 times. Today it STILL smelled like urine. I tried the recipe and it worked GREAT. I put the vinegar/water mixture in my machine and went over the stinky area. My carpets are pretty dry after the machine sucks all the water up so I went right to the next step and a few hours later I am crawling around on my hands and knees trying to find the urine smell but it is nowhere to be found!!!! : )
Quick question for you – do you have a recommendation for an odor removing recipe that can be used in a carpet shampoo vacuum? I do not want to buy a regular shampoo from the store as my vet told me it does not remove the urine smell and that animals will still be attracted and potty on the carpet as long as I use a regular shampoo.

If you notice a wet spot that may have happened earlier in the day, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit overnight, said Annie B. Bond, green living expert and author of Clean and Green. After the patch dries overnight, spray it with distilled white vinegar and don’t be concerned if the carpet bubbles a bit while the compounds interact to clean.
Liver trouble can also result in urine that is musty smelling.14 Because your liver needs to break down urea in the body, if it malfunctions it causes excess buildup of ammonia. The ammonia passes out through your urine, causing that trademark foul smelling pee.15
To relate to the throwing up issue my cat apparently has a sensitive stomach. I’ve tried high end brands purchased at the vet’s office to low cost foods. He doesn’t throw up if he eats soft canned food or people food. Something in the cat food itself is causing it. So in case this is your issue- I found Hill’s Healthy Balance. I’ve found it at our local Fleet Farm. I assume you can find it wherever. My cat is 12 years old and has always been fairly skinny. I didn’t know what else to do for the poor thing. However, since finding this food he has nearly stopped vomiting all together. He may throw up once in a blue moon now. He also clearly has gained about 1 to 1.5 pounds and looks healthy. The food is fairly expensive but he is so much healthier and he goes through less food/uses litterbox less. So you save money in the end!
For many pet owners, urine is the enemy, the smell just never comes out! Even though it’s messy, I would almost rather have my dogs have diarrhea in the house than pee on the floor. The stink of urine lingers and just will NOT go away. Diarrhea is awful, but a good scrubbing later, I can pretend it never happened.
Popular stain removal products often have lengthy labels telling about how they use “enzymes” to digest and break down stains and odors on a molecular level. It sounds mighty fancy, but with a little time and patience you can easily make your own.
Most changes in urine odor are not a sign of disease and go away in time. Some foods and medicines, including vitamins, may affect your urine’s odor. For example, eating asparagus causes a distinct urine odor.
Also wish it had some type of a way to adjust the vigor in which it scrubs the carpet, it is just sooo powerful that I didn’t want to chance it on my more delicate area rug that I have. Don’t get me wrong if I had to choose I would rather it be super powerful as it is but it would be nice if this was an option, hint, hint…
CR’s take: Unlike most other carpet cleaners, the SmartWash Automatic is motion-activated—you push it forward and backward and the carpet cleaner detects what motion you’re making, and reacts accordingly, dispensing cleaning solution when moving forward, and sucking it up when moving backward. There are three tanks, one for detergent, one for clean water, and one for dirty water, which means you don’t have to mix up solution each time you refill the tank. Because of these features it earns a Very Good score for convenience.

Where do I begin to sing the praises on this one? I had to order it separately from Bissell.com, BUT it was well worth it. I think it only cost around $20 with s/h but you can double check that at the site. I used it on the hardwood with the solution that is also sold on the site. Didn’t notice much difference. But then I moved to my tile which is knobbly and has lots of crevices that have made me rethink my decision to get “non-slippery” tile for my kitchen. I set up the machine, using the solution and followed the directions on the bottle. I then began working that dingy, nasty tile floor over. Let me start by letting you know that this tile floor is over 10 years old, has NEVER been completely clean UNLESS I have gotten on my hands and knees and scrubbed it tile by tile, inch by inch with a brush and Clorox Clean up. Yes, you know I am doing that every weekend. Just kidding. I do it Spring and Fall. That is it. The rest of the time I am mopping with bleach water, just to keep the grout looking semi decent. Never works. This machine DOES NOT get into my deep/recessed grout, BUT it leaves the tile floor the cleanest feeling it has ever been. Even brand new! My daughter and I are barefoot people who HATE to have the feeling of dirt on our feet. This cleaner makes the tile floor clean and non-sticky. One thing I have to mention is I cannot attest to streaks as my tile is porous and does not have a glaze on it. I take an old towel once I am done with the entire floor and drag the towel with my feet. The machine will get up the water for the most parts, but often leaves a scant line of water on either side of the head. I usually can get it by just going back over with the machine, but if I miss parts, I simply use the towel. The entire kitchen would NORMALLY take me 30 minutes to mop (large kitchen/dining area) and now I am done in less than 15 minutes with the cleanest kitchen floor ever!
