Bad odors often indicate the presence of harmful bacteria, mold, or other contaminants – which is why it is important to identify the root cause and deal with the problem at its source. Stinky smells caused by mold, pets, cooking, fire or cigarette smoke can not only affect your lifestyle, but also cause loss of property value or trigger adverse health effects. A healthy home is important to the health of your family, don’t ignore a bad smell in house, workplace or car, it could be a sign of unhealthy indoor air quality.
I just read this on the Humane Society’s website: Avoid using steam cleaners to clean urine odors from carpet or upholstery. The heat will permanently set the stain and the odor by bonding the protein into any man-made fibers.
For more stubborn stains and aromas, there are several green enzymatic cleaners you can find to spray on your carpet or, if you have older stains to tackle, consider renting a carpet-cleaning machine from a local store. Rinse the tank out well before use and don’t use the chemical-heavy cleanser that’s often sold with the rental. Instead, Bond recommends using a natural cleaner or a combination of white vinegar and water.
I use SCOE 10X which I can only buy online. Unlike others, it is probiotic based. Nothing else worked for dog urine odor. Be sure to soak thoroughly and then rinse thoroughly with a wet-dry vacuum and water, or it may pick up soil later. Normally this does not happen, it just depends on how much I have to use.
When cat urine dries, the urea is broken down by the bacteria. This is what makes it smell like ammonia. As it decomposes further, it releases thiols that make the odor worse. (It is the thiols in skunk spray that make it SO potent and difficult to remove).
There aren’t many downsides to our furry friends. They provide us with a whole lot of joy, but an unfortunate side effect of living with them is the fact that we end up with both stains and odors that can get rather distasteful. Thankfully, there are a lot of ways to take care of them, so if you’ve been looking for a commercial solution to this nose hair burning and unsightly problem, we’re happy to present you with some solutions.
By wetting the carpet will sometimes “reactivate” the cat urine odor, making it stronger before it gets better. If you’ve treated three or more times, wait a few days to see what happens with the odor. Don’t treat again. Usually what will happen is one of two things: 1) The smell will be lessened but not completely gone, or 2) The smell will have gone completely away.
Hi, so we got 2, 3 month old, kittens about a month ago. Initially they had zero trouble finding and using the litter box. I decided to try to potty train them. I’ve done quite a bit of research on it but despite reading several articles that say not to rush them, I thought my cats were smarter than others 🙂 I was wrong! I have now realized the error of my ways and feel that I have made many many steps to correct my errors. My biggest issue was changing from the old-school cat litter to the flushable wheat kind too fast. I have given up on even trying to potty train until I can get both of the kittens to use the litter box every single time. I think it is only one of the cats that is having any trouble, but he either pees or poops near the litter box or he pees in my bedroom in the corner. I have tried several cleaning solutions but I’m planning on using your recipe today to completely rid the smell. If I am able to get out the urine smell, is that enough to deter him from using it again? Or do you have any other suggestions? I clean their litter box out twice a day and I did some research and found that some cats don’t like a lot of litter in the litter box, it gives them a quicksand feeling, so I have a small pan next to the larger one with only a small amount of litter in it. I still came home from work last night to find poop in the bathtub next to the litter box. Please help!! Thank you!!
If you wish to keep your cat away from certain areas that are at risk from your cat’s urination such as sofas, beds, rooms etc then I recommend a product called SSScat. It is a motion activated spray which delivers a noisy burst of air to frighten your cat away from an area. It is completely safe and harmless.  Now watch this video of SSScat in action. You can usually purchase it on ebay.
Step two requires buying Angry Orange. Angry Orange is a smell that cats hate and is actually pretty pleasant to others. It smells like straight oranges. I bought the spray bottle and the concentrated refill bottle. Because I am CP phobic, I put a lot of the concentrated angry orange in a spray bottle and a little bit of water. I grabbed my UV light and went after the spots like the crazy, mad woman I have become. I sprayed all the spots only to have the entire house overwhelmed with the smell of orange. I am pretty sure my neighbors think I have opened a juicing station in the middle of my kitchen. I highly recommend following the directions of using the correct ratio of water to Angry Orange. If you do not follow the directions, not only will you think about writing a book called “James and the Giant Orange” but there will be slight orange spots on your carpet. Which now we can go to step 3.
Mix 3% percent hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of dish detergent. Sprinkle this solution over the baking soda. Scrub this solution into the soiled area with a cloth. Rinse the cloth several times as needed. Scrub in several different directions to make sure the solution is thoroughly penetrating the soiled area. Blot the area again. [17]
Try this super product from Nature’s Miracle that contains no phosphates and is designed for use with any brand of machine you have for cleaning your rugs and carpets, provided that it is of the water-based type.
Clean the carpets. Spot cleaning stains will help remove smells from specific areas, but you may have a bunch of different smells over different areas of the carpet. Tackle smells all over the house with a thorough carpet cleaning. This might take time, but be patient. A smell-free house is worth the effort.[3] You can either use a powder or wet shampoo to clean your carpets:
This doesn’t look like your average dog toy, because it isn’t! The Outward Hound Puzzle Cube is an interactive puzzle toy for pups that enjoy squeaking and chasing tennis balls. It stimulates your dog’s mind and gets him up and active.
A good sign that your cat is urinating as a marking mechanism is if they urinate on a vertical surface, like the wall. This is commonly called spraying. While any cat may do it, those who haven’t been spayed or neutered are more likely to urinate outside of the litter box as a marking behavior. You may consider getting your cat spayed or neutered to manage this urge. Additionally, take a look at why your cat might be concerned about marking their territory. Have stray or feral cats hanging around recently? Is there a new feline addition to the home? Have there been other changes in the home environment?
No need to worry about staining either, this product breaks down the stains which can emerge from urine in a natural way. This allows things to get settled out and leave you with a clean floor that only has the cleaner’s scent to it.
One of the most frustrating things that can happen to a cat guardian is inappropriate cat urination, especially if it happens to take place on your furniture. Here are some cat urine cleaner methods using enzymatic cleaners or alternative methods.
Cats spray, or urine mark, as a normal way to communicate with others. While most cats mark by releasing small amounts of urine on vertical surfaces, occasionally they may also spray on horizontal surfaces, or even defecate. The majority of cats that spray are males that have not been neutered; hormones can play a significant role in urine marking.
4. Boys Bathroom – The stinkiest place in our house is our boys’ bathroom, hands down. It’s the bathroom of choice for all three of my boys and all of the neighborhood kids who spend most of their time hanging out here. It’s definitely well used, and no matter how often it’s cleaned, it always has a lingering “boy smell.”  After the boys cleaned up the bathroom, I sprayed a good amount of Stinkers! on the rugs and shower curtain and gave the entire room a quick spray. The Stinkers! worked SO well at getting rid of the funky bathroom smell that even after a week the room still smells fresh! I’ll be storing my bottle of Stinkers! underneath their bathroom sink from now on so that it’s always handy and convenient!

If you catch your cat urinating on your carpet or floor, gently and quickly move him to the litter tray. Don’t punish him as this may increase his stress. Try to reinforce positive behavior. Punishment only causes more stress.
