And sodium acetate really wont do anything to anything at that concentration either, it’s far too diluted in the mixture to actually do anything. The only thing you could argue is putting the baking deep in the stain then pouring the vinegar over it. It could lift some of the stains away from carpet fibers, but the actual chemistry of mixing the ingredients WONT do anything. You are cleaning it with basically nothing but water.
Good luck, I know this is going to be a huge project for you but you will feel so much better when your environment is clean and fresh. Don’t be consumed by embarrassment. None of us has our shit completely together. You’re not alone in that.
Kierstin, you can also use ammonia when cats have peed on the carpet. Ammonia works with the same premise as two negatives make a positive. The ammonia and eventually negates the pee smell.
After you have used the blotting treatment above to deal with wet stains or the blacklight gadget above to locate those ‘invisible; dry stains, it is time to tackle the odor! I like to keep a spray bottle handy containing a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water.

Did you know that cats are obligate carnivores? This means that hey HAVE to eat meat, ONLY meat. They do not need vegetables nor grains. Veterinarians sell foods with grains without even considering the physiology of felines, it’s absolutely horrible. Cat food manufacturers show pictures of healthy vegetables and grains on the bags of food and people think it’s good for their cats, it’s not. I’m convinced that this bad diet, perpetuated by nearly everyone, is the cause of so many feline problems…UTIs, bladder issues, diabetes, etc.
Yes! This formula is optimal for organic (protein-based) stains. Protein-based stains include human stains such as blood, vomit, feces and semen. It is also great for pet stains. The product may also be used as a pretreatment step on sheets, pillowcases, towels and linens prior to a normal laundry wash. The pretreatment step will boost the removal of food stains such as gravy, spaghetti sauce, red wine and chocolate syrup during laundering.

Having pets can be a rewarding experience for people of all ages and walks of life, but caring and cleaning up after them can cause many concerns and questions to arise. As the most common house pets, dogs and cats can have the unfortunate habit of urinating on sofas, recliners and whatever upholstered furniture you may have. This is a more common occurrence when animals are younger and have not been fully trained to go outside or use the litter box. However, if your pet is suddenly urinating or eliminating in inappropriate areas, it may be a sign of illness or disease, and a visit to the vet would be needed. In the mean time, it’s important pet urine and its smell is cleaned and eliminated to prevent future accidents from reoccurring.
I have a cat that was sick with a uti and he urinated in this one spot over and over again. I’ve tried a vinegar solution, commercial cleaners and had it professionally cleaned and the smell will not go away. How do you recommend using the Borax? If this doesn’t work then I’m gonna have to pull up the carpet.
You can also try using a black fluorescent light. These lights will show stains on furniture, walls, or carpet as yellow spots. You can purchase a black light rather inexpensively from pet stores or online.[3]
I don’t know what to say about how wonderful this tip has been. I have two bichons, one of which has always had problems with holding her bladder. I used Arm and Hammer Stain and Odour Remover which worked pretty well, but over time my rug had the most awful odour- sort of peppery and sickly. I was at the point of replacing my expensive rug when I came across this site. Thank goodness I did! I applied all the solutions this evening and, two hours later, I can’t smell anything nasty. I am going to reapply tomorrow because it takes no time to do this. I just want to ensure this ugly stench stays away. Thank you, thank you.
Someone please help! We moved into our house at the end of November and we have 1 cat. The previous owners had cats over the years, as well. We noticed that anytime the basement got damp (our sewer backed up in winter and now with springtime thaw and rain~basement leaks a little bit) that the smell of cat urine was overwhelming. Under our stairs was a space that was semi-boarded up, so I took the boards down and found about 50+ piles of cat poop that was certainly OLD and white, as well as lots of dirt (?), rotted wood, etc…bought a black light and yes, it is all cat urine under there too. I then scanned the entire basement and there is cat pee EVERYWHERE!!! I don’t know what to do or where to start, since this is not a small, localized area. Call a haz-mat team? I know professional services can be expensive. Please help!! Oh, and the walls are old fieldstone and the floor is rough and bumpy cement. Thanks in advance!
My cat has sprayed up against the glass window on my gas fire. I have had it pulled apart and thoroughly cleaned and I can still smell the burnt cat pee every time I light it. I have no idea how the glass can have absorbed the smell, I can only assume it has dribbled down into the vents. I have tried spraying aromatherapy oils and Odour remover in the same place as the cat peed in the hopes it would get into the vents as well but no luck… Any ideas? It is winter here in New Zealand and getting cold, but lighting the fire is making me sick! 🙁

If the area you are working with is the carpet, work the baking soda into the carpet fibers carefully with an old toothbrush or something similar, something that won’t damage the carpet fibers. And do be careful that you don’t pull or snag the carpet fibers.
When a cat has urinated on hardwood, the cat urine has seeped deep into the floors. To neutralize the cat urine, you would need to apply the cat urine smell remover so that it would seep deep into the floors as well. Due to the possibility of warping, we just can’t safely recommend this.
