Cats often “go” outside the box to let you know what’s going on with health issues, their feelings about changes in the house, and their displeasure with their cat litter box. Another reason? Unneutered males spray to mark their territory, and unneutered females spray to let male cats know that they’re in heat.

Hi Debbie, oh that is awful! I had a cat who would VOMIT on me while I was sleeping, so I can kind of feel your pain. First off, the blanket – you may want to trash it if you can’t get the smell out. They’ll keep peeing on it if they smell the pee. I’m not a vet, so of course I’m obliged to tell you that you should talk to your vet, but in my experience cats will urinate in the places they’ve gone before because they associate that as a peeing-spot.
This solution works great for clothes: 1 scoop Gain with Febreze, 1 cup borax, and 1 capful Febreze In Wash Odor Eliminator. Put the clothes in the washing machine and pour most of the list directly in the (cold) water steam as your washer fills, and a little directly on the clothes. Run on heavy soil and enjoy fresh smelling clothes free of cat urine smell!
It’s also important to consider your dog’s motivations for peeing inside. Sometimes, inappropriate elimination is a sign of a medical issue. It can also indicate anxiety or emotional distress. If your dog is peeing indoors, start with a vet visit to rule out physical causes.

I used stickable 1/4 inch foam around my door cracks and used a rolled up towel and body pillow against the bottom of the door crack to solve this problem. You might also want to close any heating vents in your room (if you can maintain a comfortable temperature in there without them), as the smoke travels through these vents.
It gets rid of the smell and doesn’t make you sick in the meantime. Can’t seem to find it on line just yet. It’s a little upsetting me as the smell is absolutely tolerable. Help me find it PLEASE. Thanx.
I just wanted to say ” thank you 🙂 “. . I tried the recipe for stain pet and odor remover in the carpet of a car that I just got. The car was so smelly 🙁 . few days ago I tried a remover that I bought in a retail store and nothing , the strong odor was still there 🙁 . now , the odor is gone 🙂 , I used the recipe # 1 , I love it , it is easy to prepare 😉 .
Oh and by the way, in case you are one of the many people who walk into a room and ask,”can you smell something?”, when you know your dog or cat has peed but it’s already dried and there is nothing left but the odor – I am going to reveal how you can find the offending area of carpet or upholstery in seconds and get it dealt with, right away!
Head to Petco and pick up some cat urine remover and cleaner to help keep your house smelling fresh. Cat urine naturally attracts the attention of other felines, and unfortunately produces some rather foul odors. Further, your kitty will tend to reuse the same spots making the problem worse. There may be multiple reasons that your furry friend isn’t using their litter box such as an infection, arthritic joints or an internal issue that your veterinarian will need to diagnose. In the meantime, you may still be wondering how to get rid of urine smell from your furniture, drapes and clothes. Luckily, Petco has you covered with a full range of cat urine remover and cleaners to eliminate that funky odor.
Remove the hood. If you use a covered litter box, take the lid off to see if your cat likes it better. Covered litter boxes can make cats feel they don’t have enough escape options. The space inside can also be too short for a cat to do a proper “pee squat.”

My cat has sprayed up against the glass window on my gas fire. I have had it pulled apart and thoroughly cleaned and I can still smell the burnt cat pee every time I light it. I have no idea how the glass can have absorbed the smell, I can only assume it has dribbled down into the vents. I have tried spraying aromatherapy oils and Odour remover in the same place as the cat peed in the hopes it would get into the vents as well but no luck… Any ideas? It is winter here in New Zealand and getting cold, but lighting the fire is making me sick! 🙁
It didn’t stain mine and I left it on over night but always test a small area first and don’t be shocked if you see the baking soda start to bubble, it is supposed to do that… be sure to add enough solution.
Once the area looks clean, it’s time to eliminate the odor. Make a DIY pet stain-odor remover with a few tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and a drop or two of dish liquid. Pour the mixture onto the stained area (to be safe, text the mixture on a spot of the carpet that is hidden or out of the way to ensure that it doesn’t discolor the carpet).
Next, I tried the Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer per the instructions on the bottle (not for the carpet cleaning machine). It initially helped much more than the other two products. This product definitely leaves behind a lasting perfume scent, if unobjectionable. After a few days the entire area still smells strongly of urine. I repeated and ended up using all of the roughly 1 to 2 quart bottle on the 4 sqft smelly area with no success whatsoever.
Our dog is potty trained. But now, she is peeing in the hallway, dining room and master bedroom now. We’ve been using baby gates to keep her from going in that part of the house. But we’re getting frustrated with having to climb over baby gates now. What can we do or use to get her to stop peeing in these areas of our home?
For a DIY solution: Scrub the area throroughly with club soda, and let dry. Then sprinkle with ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda. Let it sit so the baking soda can soak up any lingering odors, and then vacuum.
This stuff is amazing. Unfortunately I have a cat that occasionally likes to use the restroom on my beautiful hardwood floors for some reason that I have yet to figure out. I have tried so many cat urine cleaning products that claim to use enzymes to remove the smell, none have worked as well as SUN. (I don’t believe SUN is an enzymatic cleaner, I could be wrong) One in particular that I used to use was Nature’s Miracle – Just for Cats. Wish that had worked because I bought a 2 gallon jug of it. This cleaner, to me smells like urine and therefore makes my house smell like urine until it completely dries, and sometimes my cat will urinate on the same area after using it. I can’t stand the smell of it. I was happy when I opened SUN for the first time, it smells great, a very clean smell.
However, if you do want to use the hydrogen peroxide, make sure you only ever use 3% solution and that you always check for color-fastness on an inconspicuous area first as it could bleach the fibers of the carpet, leaving a permanent light patch as a reminder of the accident!

There is a line that cannot be crossed when it comes to successfully decontaminating an area. It is critical that items that can’t be restored be removed and properly disposed of. If anything stays in the area that isn’t able to be thoroughly sanitized, leaving them can compromises the integrity of the entire area and poses health threats to anyone who comes in contact with the objects. Common items that may need to be discarded for safety might be couches, carpet, carpet padding, sub-flooring, and drywall. Each case is different and our cleanup team will determine what is appropriate for your circumstance and doing so will guarantee that safety has been restored.
Uric acid is not water-soluble and it bonds tightly to whatever it’s in contact with. It can’t be removed with soap, vinegar, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide – all of which are commonly recommended for removing cat urine. While these solutions can temporarily remove the smell and even appear to be effective, they ultimately don’t break down the odor-releasing uric acid. As this uric acid lingers, it can continue to release the urine smell for years. This persistent odor, while not always detectable by the human olfactory sense, may cause your cat to return to the area repeatedly, perpetuating the issue
One of the most frustrating things that can happen to a cat guardian is inappropriate cat urination, especially if it happens to take place on your furniture. Here are some cat urine cleaner methods using enzymatic cleaners or alternative methods.
Keep your pet well-groomed. A well groomed pet not only smells good, but looks good, too. Regularly bathe your pet, clip their nails, and brush their teeth. Keeping up with regular grooming can drastically improve the smell of your house, because fur, dirty nails, and even bad breath can make your house stink.
