Others believe the most powerful weapon in the fight against odor elimination in carpets, couch cushions, mattresses and linens is an enzyme-based cleaner that can be found at local pet stores. The enzymes in these products actually break down the acid in cat urine, helping to get rid of the smell at the same time. These cleaners contain natural enzymes and helpful bacteria to get rid of the bad bacteria causing the unpleasant odors.

The only way to get rid of urine odor is to use a product that has an active enzyme in it. Vinegar will only temporarily get rid of the odor. If the urine gets into the pad of the carpet, you’re sunk. If you replace your carpet, it may be worth while to get a pad that has the plastic cover to prevent it from getting wet. I’ve done this and am happy I spent the few extra dollars.
I really wanted this to be the answer to my search for a fantastic odor eliminator for doggie ooops. I wasn’t really blow away by it. I thought I wouldn’t mind mixing it and putting it in another container (as long as it was amazing) but it’s no where near as convenient and quick as the pre-mixed solution when disasters strike AND it wasn’t as effective either. Meh results plus the mixing–I’ll pass. The search continues.

This spray removes litter box odor. Other sprays claim to but fail. I have 3 or 4 litter boxes and my most smell sensitive friends tell me they do not smell the cats. The original bottle had “litter” spray on it but the “zero odor pet” works just as well.
Removing cat urine and the odor that comes along with it doesn’t have to be a difficult task, but one that you must do right away and as completely as possible to ensure that the cat doesn’t make that spot her new litter box.
Incidentally, hydrogen peroxide is an excellent blood stain remover so if you have blood on your clothing, carpeting or other fabric, you can just dab a bit of peroxide on it and it should lift off easily. This particular recipe is also great for getting the skunk smell out of your pets. If you have rambunctious dogs that like to chase skunks, you know what smell we’re talking about. Just give him a bath in the baking soda mixture and the smell will go away.
Instead of purchasing expenses products, save your money and make yourself up a solution of rug cleaner in a spray bottle consisting of white vinegar water (equal parts), dish washing liquid (a few drops). Have on hand hydrogen peroxide 3% – you can put on full strength as it’s already diluted. And some baking baking soda for later. You can also use SHOUT and Spray N Wash from your laundry room.

I have good cats but I rescued one who proceeded to mark a room where the previous owners cat smell was. I tried all I could to re-train her, get rid of the smell but it just got worse & worse. She’s been re-homed.
I am so thankful that I found this site. I have 2, 11 year old kitties, both are fixed and have medical issues. My male cat has a urinary tract disorder and requires special food and lots of water. He is the perfect kitty, loves his litter box. My female has an inoperable stomach tumor and has decided that she no longer wants to pee in the litter box. Instead she has several places in my bedroom and bathroom that she rather use. I have tried vinegar w/ water and followed that with baking soda, she goes right on top of all of it. The tile and sheetrock in the bathroom are horrible. I have tried all the natural ways of cleaning them with no avail in deterring her. I’m not sure I know what an enzyme cleaner is but really need help with this. The Vet said they don’t make kitty diapers when I asked, I am willing to try anything.
Getting rid of the smell of cat urine from carpeting can be challenging, because it can soak right through the carpet fibers to the carpet padding. And since cats have a strong sense of smell, it’s important to clean and deodorize the area completely to prevent a return visit!
For a DIY solution: Scrub the area throroughly with club soda, and let dry. Then sprinkle with ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda. Let it sit so the baking soda can soak up any lingering odors, and then vacuum.
Pour enough vinegar and water (a 50/50 mix) on the spot to dampen the area. Do not over wet, you want to keep the stain contained to the area you’re working on – not spreading it around unnecessarily.
If you suffer from the dog/cat pee problem and don’t have the ability or money to install tile, then buy indoor/outdoor carpet. The new stuff at Lowes feels like real carpet without the problems of it.
After about 24 hours, soak the area with an enzyme cleaner and let it completely air dry. To keep your family members from stepping on the spot, cover the area with a laundry basket or aluminum foil. It may take a day or two to dry completely.
The remedy is to call a certified carpet cleaner to deal with your issue. They will have the classroom as well as hands on training in how to get dog urine out of carpet. Truck mounted systems and high-end portable carpet cleaners have the vacuum power to remove the cleaning solutions from deep below the carpet, in the padding. A certified carpet cleaner will have the experience to remove urine and the brown dog urine stains.

Understanding a little about the behavior and physiological capabilities of your pet helps in understanding why enzymatic cleaners are so useful for removing pet stains. Dogs and cats have a much more highly developed sense of smell than humans do and can detect odors that we cannot smell. We think the carpet is clean because the odor and stains are gone–and then the dog/cat returns and pees on the same spot.
